Sokoro Posted April 8, 2023 It is same every year. I understand the enthusiasm, the wads are usually lovely, but one mentionation per project is enough and it would make it easier to read for *judges* and people who look there, to keep track of cool stuff. What do you think? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted April 8, 2023 I don't think it's bad enough that it needs a rule or anything, but yeah I think the judges might have heard of MyHouse by now. It's not a popularity vote so mentioning it repeatedly doesn't do anything. If you must mention it again I'd encourage you to elaborate on what makes it special to you. 13 Quote Share this post Link to post
Fairen Posted April 8, 2023 But then you might have people nominating different WADs, rather than just the latest artsy/hardcore mapset! 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Horus Posted April 8, 2023 I see your rationale, but I disagree. If someone believes that something that they played warrants a cacoward, I believe they should be free to express it. And whilst cacowards are not a popularity contest (and I’m really glad for that), number of mentionations do capture strength of feeling in the community and suggest to the reader (the general community, not just the cacoward judges) that something might be really worth their time, when you consider that many have limited free time and aren’t going to be able to play all of the year’s highlights. It also has an enforcement issue because it implies an expectation to read the entire thread before posting your nomination, and there will always be a % of people who forget / ignore that. 19 Quote Share this post Link to post

That doesn't quite jive with more than a full page of people commenting "another +1 for myhouse.wad". I really doubt more than a handful of those comments, if any, were posted not knowing whether someone mentioned the map already. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
baja blast rd. Posted April 8, 2023 What Horus said pretty much. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Scypek2 Posted April 8, 2023 Seems like the usual forum posting etiquette should apply. If all you have to say is "This.", smash that like button and move on. Maybe if it's a new thread page and the project hasn't been mentioned yet, you can make a new post to remind people it exists. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post

Mr. Alexander Posted April 8, 2023 It makes sense for MyHouse.pk3 in particular, because I'd like to see what else is out there – even artier and even more hardcore sets, maybe without the good meta-framing or polish – without having to scroll past dozens of MyHouse +1s, as it's at least a Cacoward runner-up by acclaim at this point. But that's a minor complaint, and a perennial issue with anything that catches fire on the forum, so I don't think there really needs to be a rule. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I say this as someone who loved MyHouse.pk3 and definitely thinks it deserves a Cacoward: people can cool it and start finding other stuff to plug in the thread now. I think it's all indicative of a broader "issue," which is that unless a project thread catches and sustains a lot of momentum and buzz, no matter how ambitious or well-made a project is, it tends to get buried and fall through the cracks. The repeat nominations of things that have already been nominated kind of exacerbates that, to be honest. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kinsie Posted April 8, 2023 I can't speak for the rest of the Cacoward judges, but I'm not hugely bothered by this. The absolute worst case scenario is that I have to mouse-wheel scroll past some reminders that people were very excited about a specific project, and that's not that big a deal. If you want more diverse nominations mentionations, then be the change you wish to see in the world and shout out some cool shit you're afraid we might miss out on! 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Scuba Steve Posted April 8, 2023 I'll also add... Nobody involved with the Cacowards is sifting through the thread by the end of the year. When something is posted, it gets documented in another internal spreadsheet and there it stays. Since the mentionation thread isn't a discussion topic, the glut of myhouse additions are redundant, but not really any sort of hinderance. ...I also don't speak for everyone, but community enthusiasm sometimes plays a little bit into the awards... With so many people loving AugerZenith, it did give the project a slight boost in consideration. 10 Quote Share this post Link to post
Azure_Horror Posted April 8, 2023 MyHouse is an anomaly, as far as I remember from previous years. In the end, MyHouse over-hype is just slightly annoying at worst, nothing more. Writing rules for "slightly annoying" cases is a pointless pedantry, IMO. In any case, Joke Star Ratings for files are much more annoying, and even maybe somewhat harmful. But they still keep being posted. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
