  1. 1. How did you percieve these coloured texture variants?

    • I saw them as coloured lighting
      5
    • I saw them as actually having the colour as part of the material

This is a really strange question and I apologise for hurting your brain, but I do find it interesting how different people can see certain things in different ways. I hope this makes sense.

Example in E2M3: Refinery -

I always thought that the different coloured variants of textures were supposed to be fake coloured lighting without actually having a coloured lighting feature implemented in the engine, similar to what they did for Wolfenstein 3D with it's different lighting levels baked into the textures. I realised that, given their use in PSX Doom alongside it's actual engine coloured lighting, that I may be stupid, and that I was always overthinking it - the colours are actually supposed to be a part of the material the texture is trying to be. How did other people perceive this?

The game has different lighting all over, E1M2 in particular has a room with flashing lights, I immediately noticed they were supposed to be colored different as opposed to fake lighting.

It never even occurred to me that they were meant to convey light dynamics rather than different materials (or staining of the same material.)  Granted, I can't tell whether they're green or brown or what half the time but that's a different issue.

I think if they wanted to imply colored lighting, they'd have also changed the floor and ceiling textures. The colors also aren't the kind of colors one would associate with colored lighting: BRown, Green, GRey, and TAN, but not bold red or blue. There's even some transition textures from one color to another.

I've always seen them as the same type of wall but in the case of STARTAN and STARGR as different states of neglect due to environmental exposure to mold and humidity and in the latter nukage fumes.

It's just the paint color.

New question: Why did UAC paint their techbases like a fun house? I think I'd rather believe they have obnoxious lighting.

As Solmyr said, I always assume it is supposed to represent the decay of the techbases. I have always imagined the doom demons to irradiate heat and thus contribute to the humidity and environmental exposure.

I've never seen such a drab funhouse, with only a bunch of green and brown walls.

"We're going to build the craziest fun house ever!  Let's start by painting the walls!"

"What mad colors do you want?"

"Brown, Grey, Green and Tan!  The craziest of ALL the colors!"
