Individualised Posted April 10, 2023 (edited) This is a really strange question and I apologise for hurting your brain, but I do find it interesting how different people can see certain things in different ways. I hope this makes sense. Example in E2M3: Refinery - I always thought that the different coloured variants of textures were supposed to be fake coloured lighting without actually having a coloured lighting feature implemented in the engine, similar to what they did for Wolfenstein 3D with it's different lighting levels baked into the textures. I realised that, given their use in PSX Doom alongside it's actual engine coloured lighting, that I may be stupid, and that I was always overthinking it - the colours are actually supposed to be a part of the material the texture is trying to be. How did other people perceive this? Edited April 10, 2023 by Individualised 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
invalidlain Posted April 10, 2023 The game has different lighting all over, E1M2 in particular has a room with flashing lights, I immediately noticed they were supposed to be colored different as opposed to fake lighting. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted April 10, 2023 It never even occurred to me that they were meant to convey light dynamics rather than different materials (or staining of the same material.) Granted, I can't tell whether they're green or brown or what half the time but that's a different issue. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted April 10, 2023 I think if they wanted to imply colored lighting, they'd have also changed the floor and ceiling textures. The colors also aren't the kind of colors one would associate with colored lighting: BRown, Green, GRey, and TAN, but not bold red or blue. There's even some transition textures from one color to another. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

LadyMistDragon Posted April 11, 2023 I'm one of the idiots who thought it was a lit ceiling. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Solmyr Posted April 12, 2023 I've always seen them as the same type of wall but in the case of STARTAN and STARGR as different states of neglect due to environmental exposure to mold and humidity and in the latter nukage fumes. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

As Solmyr said, I always assume it is supposed to represent the decay of the techbases. I have always imagined the doom demons to irradiate heat and thus contribute to the humidity and environmental exposure. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
ducon Posted April 12, 2023 I see the things on the walls in that special room in a madhouse. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I've never seen such a drab funhouse, with only a bunch of green and brown walls. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Individualised Posted April 12, 2023 An old, abandoned fun house then. Or a fun house in England. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ETTiNGRiNDER Posted April 12, 2023 Always interpreted them as painted (or maybe slime/oil dirtied) metal. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheSlipgateStudios Posted April 13, 2023 Not going to lie, I really thought those were lights when I saw them years ago lol 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
