[Community Project] Scythe: Resharpened

Recommended Posts

HELL YES, scythe.wad is my first custom mapset ever played, so it forever will be in my heart.

One suggestion I've got is how about the map names would be a spin on the original titles? Like, "Fire and Ice" could be "Hot'n'Cold".  Would give the project more character.

Anyway, I'll take MAP06: Pressure Point. Mostly for the TNT midi.

Agreed on the map names^

I'm a sucker for Scythe and I would love to see how this turns out, a couple of questions, would any of the maps have improvements based on Dean Of Doom's review?

And the question that everyone else will be asking, will MAP28 still be a dickmove altogether?

If I were to make MAP28, I would replace the voodoo heart attack with an actual threat you'd want to run from, like a Cyberdemon or an Archvile chasing you... On the other hand, the map is iconically infamous so that might be taking the soul out of it. Guess it's up to whoever decides to tackle Run From It.

What you're asking for sounds more like "Scythe, a thing that already exists but remixed slightly", which is far less compelling. Following the original right down to the map names and music choices feels really uninspired, and to me would provide far less reason to play it over the original.

If they were remixed majorly then maybe it could work. Like with more modern level designs and extra sections and all that. I dunno I'm struggling to think of what that'd look like but it could work.

New levels inspired by Scythe would probably work too though, probably would make more sense to do that one.

I had such an internal debate over MAP06 vs MAP14, And honestly... I'm glad I picked the latter, since you seem to have more passion over it than I ever did. Added!

Well, I never said to make the maps just as dickish and bad as the ones that preceeded it, generally what I'm hoping for is sort of a "Scythe, but better" type of deal.

Whatever you do, please, PLEASE, replace MAP28: Run For It with something that does not involve speedrunning!

Scythe overall was great, but that map, that fucking map...

That's exactly why I formed the rules the way they are, so that way people are compelled NOT to make that happen. So, I think the world is safe, pal.

X but better project ideas are not that fun for mappers to work on by itself, something in the vein of alm’s design could be a good project but being super rigid about it, and with enough of an ego to try and “surpass” the original, I don’t really see this turning out.

It's funny that many people complained about Map28 but no one complains about Map30 so far, or the general design of Episode 3 having no Armor in many maps.

Map28 is definitely easier to beat than Map30 in many ways. However the thing is, whether you like it or not, Map28 is one of the standout feature of Scythe, and without it, it's not Scythe.

People like to say "I like X except Y". Sorry, that sounds like "you don't like X" to me.

Well, I won't deny the fact that I missed the mark a little bit by not turning it into a "recreate the magic" type thing. However, what I've tried to do is to take a new-ish spin on that. Think... PRCP for example. It had completely new maps in the vein of Plutonia, but because of the very loose rules of that project, some of the maps fell short. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm putting a kinda sorta quality control like thing on the back of the project, to stop it from collapsing. Now, I know it took 28 days for Erik to make Scythe, which is something I chose to omit, to further the quality of the maps. So, while yes... I could have re-created the magic, in not doing so, I think I've made something just a small bit more interesting not in concept, but rather in practice.

Would love to contribute since Scythe was my first megawad I ever played if I remember correctly, but I'm not that great of an mapper yet, so I don't think I will.

As someone who did almost the same premise for their own project, all it did was make the QA process a nightmare. X but better could mean a million different things already, but that be even harder with trying to set a single standard of quality or consistency (which isn’t usually super important in a CP, but even PRCP had some tight consistency with just a general theme  and gameplay idea).

I'll take any map for this, so feel free to toss me wherever, but if I have to choose, I choose anything in the 11-17 range.

How's map12 sound?

Just to be sure, this project aims to recreate Scythe but with our own interpretations of maps? If so (or regardless, actually), I'll take Fire and Ice.

Your funeral, I guess. Added!

Also for the video of the map, I'm assuming you're not asking for the map to be done saveless, right?

I wouldn't really expect anybody to submit a video of a map of that caliber to be saveless.

Damn, that sounds too tempting! As soon as I get a couple of active projects and some IRL stuff sorted out, I'll be sure to join in.

Someone needs to make the commitment to minimum effort mapping.
