This sounds like my mental state in music form. I love it!

 

I especially love hearing darker/more ambient MIDIs. Hearing the MIDI format and the SC-55 sounds pushed to their limits is always something I'm interested in. Hope this starts a trend.

You've got three really good ones there - Drain It All, Parting Breath, and The Precipice. Well done! Good use of instruments in their lower ranges.

You know you've got something when it has Lee Jackson's approval! Drain it All is probably my favourite too.

 

It's also fun listening to these on OPL3 :D They sound great on the HMI (3D Table Sports) set.

Love how ominous-sounding these tracks are! I also think "Drain it all" is best of the bunch, the riff is killer and I love the cacophonic intro. I also liked "Trying again" a lot, especially the ending. All tracks are cool in any case :) Good job!

 

PS: Serious question: is "losing blood" an actual game/wad, or you mean it, as in, this music literally makes you bleed? :P

That's the one I was going for, although I also had the idea that if I were to make a mini-episode using these tracks, I'd probably call it "losing blood" so it works on both fronts :)

Thank you! This is the standard GM_Roland soundfont (RLNDGM), with the following layered over top, depending on the song:

Wow... I thought this was recorded from a real SC-55. That's pretty high quality for just soundfonts!

In hindsight I would have preferred real SC-55 backing, but you have to actually record each song through the line-in port and if you get even a single PC stutter, it gets baked into the recording. Doesn’t happen 99% of the time, but still it was easier in the end to just use soundfonts for exporting, partially because it’s also a lot harder to layer in extra sounds/instruments after exporting without causing peaks.

 

There are some damn good soundfonts out there, including some amazing SC-55 derivatives that are almost as good as the real thing, or in some cases like an interesting reimagining (such as with the GM2 Map Soundfont).

If you want to harness the sounds of a SC-55 without going through the hardware route, have you considered getting the Sound Canvas VA? It's a VST plugin which is essentially a software recreation of the SC-8820, which has its own bank of sounds, but also contains the sound banks of the SC-55, SC-88 and SC-88 Pro. I used this for some MIDI projects in the past before actually switching to a real SC-8820. It's a real nice unit for MIDI hobbyists although it's more geared toward playback than programming due to the absence of controls on the unit itself. You'll still be able to use MIDI commands to change up the way the sounds play, but some people may see this as a negative.

 

(The big plus however is that means there's no worry about battery leaking, unlike the other Sound Canvas units!)

 

((Also this won't supply you with 100% accurate SC-55 playback since it's only emulating the sound of the device so there are some imperfections, but on the plus side, you now get 64 voices instead of 28!))

I really dig these. All of these tracks made me think of the Blackthorne OST for SNES. The stand out track for me was The Precipice, specifically enjoyed the bit that starts at 21:00. Really enjoyed giving these a listen, keep up the great work!
