Coincident Posted April 15, 2023 ITYTD MAX in 5:41:45.49 (2023/04/07) To the best of my knowledge, this is the first non-TAS single-segment MAX run of Okuplok. This was played on I'm Too Young To Die. I couldn't do it on Ultra-Violence; and not for the lack of trying. Even though most of the tricks and strategies used here are feasible on UV, some of the later fights are pure RNG BS, especially the Crossfire Arena with Hell Knights and caged Cyberdemons. Losing multiple 5-hour-long UV runs over and over again THAT LATE into the map would drive me insane. Especially considering that surviving up to that point is no easy task either. The only reason I played this on ITYTD was because there was no single-segment run yet. Even though ITYTD means half-damage taken, I consider an Ultra-Violence run of this map to be 8 times more difficult. I believe I could do a UV run with about 6 segments, but I'm not sure I want to try that so soon. My time on ITYTD is totally beatable, and I'm sure it won't be long before someone ups the ante to Ultra-Violence. Here's a brief explanation of the strategies and line-skips used: - Monster herding is required for the bigger fights to bring the mobs away from where you want to go. I can't really go into much detail without writing an essay, so just try to mimic my movements and timings. - In the "Marble Dungeon" I recommend leaving the supercharge downstairs for the 1st revenant hall upstairs. Do the south hall first, which unlocks another supercharge for the 2nd revenant hall. - The "Castle Siege" fight is the 1st big run killer. This fight is nearly as hard on UV as on ITYTD, because a single face-rocket means you will be pushed out of position and blinded, which in turn means more rockets to the face which means death. In this fight you either do some immaculate monster herding and you get out of the fight with nearly zero damage, or you get destroyed in a split second. Again I can't go into much detail here, so mimic my movements and timings. The key is to delay each position change as long as possible until you make the next move, and using the chaingun when running by the cybers to delay the in-fighting in the other direction before you run back to avoid stray rockets for a few seconds. - Once inside the castle, the next line-skip is not "mandatory" but it does make it easier to kill the revenants. With slow movement you can open the coop teleporter, and then do a simple SR40 skip outside which prevents the door from closing. Not a big deal, just use the same position and angle I used here. If you fail the skip you should still be able to wing it with the BFG. - I had a line-skip prepared for the "Rusty Roundabout" (the fight just before the "Revenant Snake"), but I completely butchered it by accidentally pressing 'D' on my keyboard. Rip. Anyway the trick was to trigger the coop teleporter, and then use the other side of the linedefs with a precise alignment to SR40 skip past one of the lines that triggers the barriers that close the backwards path. Then you can just hide behind the wall as everything in-fights. Or fail the skip like I did and wing it with the BFG. - I spent WEEKS on the "Revenant Snake"... It felt impossible to beat consistently. And then I saw Zero Master's No-Damage UV Fast TAS where he seamlessly pulls off line-skips that leave the backwards path, and the coop teleporter open. With that trick done you can basically hide there until the Cybers are dead, making the fight very easy. But finding a consistent, non-TAS setup for this took me a while, because even after finding the right pixels to wall-run and line-skip correctly, half the time the trick would still fail. Only much later did I realize that I wasn't *truly* hugging the wall, which made the wall-run interrupt mid-way, completely ruining the setup. So since I discovered about that I also used mouse-strafe to slowly hug the wall a bit more before attempting the line-skip. Only then did the trick become consistent (and only at this point did I decide to try the single-segment run). You also need a simple SR40 trick backwards, which is easy to do because you can use the absolute corner of the room at that angle, and then just stay near the other side to wake up as few revenants as possible as you crawl your way past the 1st Cyber and into cover. Try not to fail these line-skips... I don't advise to try and wing this fight with the BFG. If you feel that you started running wrong, get back into the setup position and try again. With the setups I used, you have enough space for that. - The Arch-Vile closet fight with Hell Knights and Cacodemons is the best fight in Okuplok IMO because it's one of the rare fights that is skill-based, and not RNG based (even though this one still kicks my ass in UV). The double-ammo of ITYTD plays a huge role as you can basically kill all the Hell Knights in one go without risking having to run past them to the other side like on UV. To dodge the projectiles coming from both sides, I use a "triangular" movement pattern, where two of the edges of the triangle keep me temporarily safe from either group of enemies. The 3rd edge of the triangle (diagonal-left) is the most dangerous, so I try to look carefully ahead, then move in at high speed, and repeat the process. - In the Baron crusher, the last two pairs of crushers are in sync every 5 cycles. Just wait behind the megasphere, watch the middle crushers until the time is right, and run through. I recommend leaving the megasphere up until the last moment so you can skip the 2nd megasphere in the middle of the Crossfire Arena. - I absolutely hate the Crossfire Arena. I also spent WEEKS searching for better ways to survive this unfiltered RNG BS, but I found none. I tried IDCLIP'ing outside the map (in case someone found a way to void-glide out), but there doesn't seem to be an angle where you can zero-press the buttons from the void, and also you get stuck near the buttons because of weird elevation changes in the void. Maybe when someone finds some other trick to break this fight will we see a UV single-segment run? Anyway, no matter what you do here, you will have to run in-between the in-fighting Cybers and Hell Knights, and no matter how good your monster herding skills are, no matter how fast your dodging is, you'll still risk a random rocket to the face sometimes. I used a herding trick at the beginning to buy myself some time of safety while the Cyberdemons are already killing Hell Knights but only the far side of the arena approaches me. This also drags most of the crowd to one side only, which helps herding and rotating later. Afterwards, when I run out and wake up everything else, I try to move from each side of the arena as LATE as possible, so that I'm dragging the Hell Knights closer to my corner as much as possible. The result is that, after running across, the other side is relatively empty and gives me some room to breathe. Delaying EVERY movement as much as possible is the key to survive this, but delaying too much might mean getting stuck... I'm sorry but at this point I have no secrets left to share. Be ready for pain. - If you survived the Crossfire Arena there's no reason to die in the following fights... other than to silly mistakes due to being tired or stressed out: I've been there. In the last blue key fight I recommend leaving the invulnerability for the very last encounter with the Arch-Viles. Do not leave your successful run at the mercy of Arch-Vile RNG! That's it. All of these strats and more will be explained in the Okuplok Strategy Guide video series, but that will still take a while to be complete. That's why I wrote this bit of text to help in the meantime. GL&HF: Good Luck & Happy Facerockets. oku-itytd-54145.zip 115 Quote Share this post Link to post
ImproversGaming Posted April 15, 2023 Damn, that is some achievement! Well done! I love the Okuplok Strategy videos you are creating too. Will be interesting to see if this draws others into similar runs. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Redneckerz Posted April 15, 2023 Instant classic run because its non-TAS. It wasn't a matter of if, but rather, of when. What a Coincident (heh) then that Coincident is the one to do it. This at the very least needs a passing reference on this year's Cacowards. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think this kind of demos is more than inspirational for other people to try themselves in Doom speedrunning, as well as make further improvements. The bar has been raised once again, and now it is not considered anymore to be almost impossible for a non-TAS deathless and saveless max run of Okuplok to be done, let it be on ITYTD. Edited April 15, 2023 by Geniraul Missed the word "max" first. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Poncho1 Posted April 15, 2023 Bravo. This must've been more stressy than revision. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Roofi Posted April 16, 2023 It's crazy how this map remains so popular 10 years after its release. Okuplok would have deserved its place in the top 100 memorable maps made by the Doom community. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
facespkz Posted April 17, 2023 I just finished watching the run today, crazy to see you pull this off! Even if it's on baby difficulty I'm so happy that someone finally put this monster to sleep, especially one of the unluckiest runners :P 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
HorseJockey Posted April 17, 2023 Great run! Haven't watched all of it, but my goodness. Congrats on completing this. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted April 17, 2023 Hope Karl Jobst makes a video about this. "On 15th of April 2023, Doom player Coincident achieved THIS run..." 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doktor_L Posted April 18, 2023 Not to minimise this achievement (it's legendary!) but UV isn't the only milestone remaining. The final challenge would be to also do it without exploiting obvious bugs (glitchless category) so no pressing switches through walls (well, that's not applicable) and no line skips. This map is not about speedrunning, after all, it's a fight challenge. For complete purism one could also refrain from killing those first few chaingunners before revealing them but that didn't look like it impacted overall difficulty that much. Be that as it may, even a bug-exploiting run of THIS is one for the history books. You've done something no one else will ever be able to do: you were the first. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I thought about it, but probably it will take him a long time to even learn about this achievement. You could just name the video "This doom level took 12 years to beat" and the views would come in rolling. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
slowfade Posted April 18, 2023 (edited) Just finished watching this entire monster of a run! GG! Amazing stuff. Some great recoveries and dangerous moments there. That Crossfire Arena was so brutal. I hadn't seen it before, never tried this map or watched it segmented. Definitely using such a mechanic in a map of my own one day. Also looking forward to the rest of the strategy guide series, it's great so far. Edited April 18, 2023 by slowfade 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dogmachine Posted April 19, 2023 Formidable endurance test here. Btw you did a great job making sure the cybers dealt with a lot of the sheep (e.g. the crossfire fight and revenant snake fight). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kyka Posted April 27, 2023 Well done. Another Doom accomplishment, well, accomplished. Superb. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kyka Posted May 15, 2023 (edited) Actually working my way through watching this. haha too tedious to watch all in one go, but watching it in "episodic" lengths - surprisingly enjoyable, and featuring regular interludes of very very tense near death moments. Well done again. Edited May 15, 2023 by Kyka 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
