DNSKILL5 Posted April 17, 2023 (edited) Doomworld has a feature that is great to use called Status Updates. While many of us who have been here for a while are aware of this feature, I have a suspicion that there are far more users that have yet to realize this exists and perhaps if they are made aware of it they will better utilize the forums, preventing them from posting their every random train of thought as a new topic when it likely would’ve made a better status update instead. Let’s face it. Younger and younger people enter this forum and are not from the age when forums were far more common, where rules and forum etiquette were completely understood. They may not realize what they’re doing is irritating, near spammy, etc. so let’s have some patience and be understanding and not rude and condescending. We have moderators and admins here for making the tough decisions on user activity, but every member can help another enjoy their stay at Doomworld and make it more enjoyable for everyone. Anyways, here’s how to write status updates on your own starting from the main page: Step 1: Click on the three horizontal lines to access the Doomworld User Control System: Spoiler Step 2: A menu is displayed with several option tabs. Click on the Account tab: Spoiler Step 3: Another menu is displayed with other option tabs to select from. Select the Profile tab: Spoiler Step 4: You're now on your profile page. Scroll down until you see this text box: Spoiler Step 5: Click into the text box and write whatever has come to your mind that you’d like to share, but remember, this is like a social media feature. What you post is PUBLIC. You can edit these posts and do just about anything else you’d want to do in any ordinary forum post, but you do also have the ability to delete these posts if you decide maybe it shouldn’t have been posted. Here’s an example of a status update: Spoiler Now that you have your status text box filled with what you wanted to put there, click “Submit Status”. Now your status update has been posted to Doomworld. So now you know how to write status updates of your own. Now it’s time to learn to not be self-centered and read other folk’s status updates too! Follow these steps: Step 1: From the main page, once again click the three horizontal lines to access the Doomworld User Control System: Spoiler Step 2: A menu is displayed with several option tabs. Click on the Activity tab: Spoiler Step 3: Another menu is displayed with other option tabs to select from. Select the Status Updates tab: Spoiler Step 4: You are now on the Status Updates page: Spoiler That's all there is to it. Enjoy! I don’t expect this to stop the shenanigans, but it may at least inform someone who was unaware. Edited April 17, 2023 by CAM-7EA 11 Quote Share this post Link to post

HorseJockey Posted April 17, 2023 Absolutely sound reasoning. Jokes aside, a solid post that seems to be much needed as of late. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Midway64 Posted April 17, 2023 A really easy-to-follow tutorial on one important forum aspect. Makes me want to post a status update telling everyone "they don't freaking own every DOOM game!1111!1!!1/1!1". 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Just kidding, a valuable post and a very useful guide, hopefully it will help new members adapt. Edited April 18, 2023 by Geniraul 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr Masker Posted April 18, 2023 I can't wait to copy and paste the link to this post many times until Doomworld is SAVED from this crisis. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dweller Dark Posted April 19, 2023 I've been distracted by other things, but I think this should be pinned in Doom General at some point, since that's where most threads like these are (I assume it's because that's where new users tend to go first, though that may have changed in recent years). Most of the basic tutorials, like how to start threads or get into Doom, are in Doom General and this thread is worth being there too. Or at least, parts of the thread could be added on to an existing tutorial for better coverage of Doomworld's features. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

It definitely is on the Doom General section where most of these posts happen, though it happens elsewhere too at times. It isn’t just that they don’t use the status updates, they also don’t use the search features, or read pinned posts in general. Obviously, you can’t force them to do any of this from the get-go, but the ones who at least try to understand how forums work and what the features are there for could perhaps lessen the burden just a tad. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
LegendaryEevee Posted May 7, 2024 @DNSKILL5 Yes Bump I get it however I see this particular instance was not addressed. When creating your status updates for your page. Is there an option, or checkbox or a way to actually display your status updates. I post daily status updates and notice each time I access my page none of them ever show. Instead it asks me to enter a new update making me feel it didn't take the previous one. I saw there's a few steps you can go through to see them but surely there's a way to make them visible at a glance to see what people are saying on their pages? If not seems this would be important to limit the extra clicks to pull it up for everyone's page you look at? Please let me know as I love the feature and would like to more easily see what people have posted when visiting them and seeing my own. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DNSKILL5 Posted May 7, 2024 @LegendaryEevee read this post: This is why they’re not showing up when you look at your main page, but they are still being posted and are still visible just not on the main profile page. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
