Hey, me too with my Cousin.

We had a burned CD with many Dosgames.

We didn't got far in Doom 2, as we had no Idea how to jump over the Gap in the second Level :P

But Doom 1 was no Problem, even if we had no Idea what all the Text before starting a Game was ment to tell us.

Keyboard only btw. Wasn't as strange back then as it feels nowadays.

Since I was 2 years old actually, my brothers showed me what buttons to press and such. Apparently after a while I knew how to do a little stuff by myself.

6 or 7 when I started on Doom95 shareware in 1999 and 8 on DOS shareware v1.8 in spring 2001. Provoking monster infights was the best part of the game back then.

I was 12, on a Packard Bell 368x SX IBM clone. I couldn't tell you what the specs were, and at this point I don't even want to know. This was still well within the pre-Pentium era. My first copy of the shareware version was a 5x7" floppy disc. My first copy of the first full commercial release was on four 3x5" floppy discs. DOOM II was the first CD-ROM game I ever owned.

I also did write already in which year I did discover DOOM:

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/post/2565653

So in 2010, when I played only Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch via Skulltag, I was around 16 years old.

In 2014, when I played the DOOM games via Chocolate DOOM, I was 20 years old.

I was born in December 1993, some days before the launch of DOOM. :D

I was 8 or 9 and had played lots of Wolfenstein 3D before Doom and after too, the 386 didn't run Doom so well. Had to use smallest screensize or medium screensize and the low detail mode :D

Around 14. I might have played the first two or three maps of Doom 1 earlier, but my earliest concrete memory of playing it was a few months after I switched to Linux. I discovered that the Doom Shareware WAD, plus (an old version of) Freedoom and some source ports, were in the Debian GNU/Linux repository, and was excited because I'd heard they were classics. I ended up playing Doom Shareware on the easiest-to-use of those source ports, Doomsday, and later pirated every other commercial IWAD, but never got very far in any of them. (Loved Heretic though.) It would be late 2020/early 2021 when I became properly obsessed with Doom, and officially bought the commercial games. That obsession was sparked by a playthrough of Freedoom 0.11.3 on PrBoom+ and some watching of decino and MtPain27's vids.

I didn't get into DooM until rather recently; it was before the 2016 reboot, but not by much, and it wasn't even id Software's .IWADS at first, I was playing FreeDOOM for I think at least a year before I got the id .IWADS.

I feel like Freedoom's ability to introduce people to wider Doom content has been underestimated. Lots of people end up playing it because it's mixed in with Android apps, or included in software repositories for Linux, or included with all sorts of other copies of Doom source ports. I once saw a YouTuber show a video of Freedoom when talking about "maps in Brutal Doom," which makes it sound like they were bundled at some point.

It wasn't Android app FreeDOOM, it was Zandronum running FreeDOOM on my PC; but I get what you're talking about. I still have the FreeDOOM .IWADS because they're genuinely fun to play.

Yeah, and they keep getting better. 0.13.0 is coming soon and the changes in the current autobuilds fix most of my remaining complaints about the game.

How did you run into Freedoom, then? Or Zandronum?

I started playing Doom in 1994 when i was 13 years old.

I still remember that some of the more paranoid parents of my friends had a meeting where they decided they need to have a look to see how much of a bad influence it is.

So my dad, who is a very relaxed guitar rocker kind of guy, went into my room and asked me to play Doom. He takes one look at it and immediately knows that this is the same shit he was watching as movies or listening to in song form two decades ago.

With that, any concerns (Atleast in our family) were off the table and i could make my own murder-mazes.

I was 12, and it was spring of 1995. I started with Doom shareware, which I played at a friend's house. He loaned it to me, and we tried to install it on a 386, and it didn't work. Six months later, on Thanksgiving weekend, my family got a Pentium. I borrowed shareware Doom again and it worked beautifully. Then over Christmas vacation, my brother got Ultimate Doom. And I remember before I even really familiarized myself with the levels, I got D!Zone, which had 700 new levels. A few months later, we got Doom 2.

I was 5, so around 26 years ago. Fond memories of launching Doom (+ Heretic, Hexen) from DOS, doing co-op over LAN, all that good stuff. Later when we got Win95, it came with Doom95 and being able to use a launcher to pick any level (or load a PWAD) was super cool, once you figured out how to get the mouse working! At some point in time the entire contents of what I can only assume was D!Zone or Maximum Doom appeared on the computer, my dad's friend probably gave him a copy or something. Many fond memories of playing janky (and occasionally pretty good!) 90s maps, it had well known ones like UAC_DEAD and Deimos Subway in there. Golden years!

7 or 8 or so. It was after Final Doom had been out, I pointed to that at a Sam’s Club and my parents bought it; they probably wouldn’t have if it didn’t have such relatively tame box art.

Fairly positive I’ve posted this in a couple of the threads that @HorseJockey provided.

I started playing when I was 5, but I think I started to watch my dad play a little before that, they just wouldn't let me yet. Or that's what he has told me anyway, I have pretty much no memories of me playing Doom that young.

6 years old. Dad showed me the first 2 classic games and Doom 3. They scared the absolute hell out of me but with fear comes intrigue, and that intrigue turned into obsession when I rediscovered the series at age 14. I'm 20 years old now and Doom has more or less become my "comfort food" game.

Didn't build my first PC until 1994; I was still futzing with my Atari XEGS system before that.

First games on that AMD 386dx40 were Lemmings, Krusty's Funhouse, some Tetris clone

and Wolfenstein 3d. When my roommate was busy playing Doom 2 & Heretic, I was obsessing

over a game called Corridor 7; I believe it was built on the Wolf 3d engine. So I didn't start

playing Doom until 1997 and that was Doom 2. It was somewhere in the early 2000s before I

went back, bought and played the original Doom. I remember I'd just upgraded to a 133MHz

Pentium ~ oooh! The machine had a motherboard called a SIMM saver which allowed me to

use my (then) expensive 30-pin SIMMs from the old 386 motherboard whereas all the rest of

the motherboards of the day were using 72-pin SIMMs. I was 29 years old.

A little late in my youth but I want to say like 13 years old around 2014 like most youngsters. My interest of it came from that shareware version frrom Unblocked Awesome Schoolgames dot com, the XBOX 360 port demo and of course watching Brewtal Dewm on youtube.
