What age did you start DOOM?

Recommended Posts

25 or 26, I'm not sure. I think it was around 2019 so yeah, not that long ago. But it has been pretty damn intense

Yeah, and they keep getting better. 0.13.0 is coming soon and the changes in the current autobuilds fix most of my remaining complaints about the game.

How did you run into Freedoom, then? Or Zandronum?

Sorry about not getting back to you yesterday. New user limitations like "X posts per day" kinda suck.

Anyway, this was a ways back, 2015 I think. I was part of a Discord server for a driving/platforming game called Distance, and I was talking about wanting to try something that would feel similar to classic DooM before buying the old "Classic Complete" pack on Steam. I asked what source ports they suggested and one of the users suggested Zandronum. Didn't actually buy the id Software .IWADs until 2017, though, despite how much fun I was having with FreeDOOM.

As far as which FreeDOOM .IWADs I retain, I only have the singleplayer mapsets, not FreeDM.

Nice. Freedoom is perfect for that, indeed.

The new user limitations are unfortunate, they probably do discourage and help to stop spambots though...

I was 5 when I found the Doom Battlebook in my parents’ computer book library.

Not too long after, we ended up finding and downloading the shareware episode. And then we found a copy of Doom II at the computer store.

The rest is history.

Also around 1994, when I was 18 or 19.

Me too, though I was 14 at the time.

Like 13-ish. Isn't it crazy that I could be considered an older doomer for playing on the 360 port first?

But seriously, that port is actually pretty good. NRFTL blew my mind back then, and Vivisection is still in my top 3 favorite maps. I ended up playing the 360 ports of Doom and Doom 2 more than at-the-time contemporary games like Halo and Minecraft.

I don't remember for sure, but I must have been around 15 also. I remember eagerly awaiting the release of Batman DOOM, that should give you an idea of how long I've been around.

I think I was around 7 when my dad brought home Doom 2 not long after it came out. The weird thing about Doom is that if you step back and think about it, it's a pretty gory and brutal game, but in the moment it's just a high special spacial puzzle and I barely noticed the gore as a kid.

10-ish years. First experience was Freedoom and Playstation Custom Edition.

Agree with Ludi on the Xbox 360 port, that was a solid port included with one extra campaign and XBOX LIVE MULTIPLAYER! Too bad Nerve ditched it for the Unity ports.

Initially toyed around with mods on sourceports and heavy metal riffs, but now I'm just here to appreciate how damned the Doom ambience is thanks to Aubrey Hodges, also thanks to Decino, Civvie, and Doomkid for educating me the roots of the game.

I'd say at some point between 6 and 8. We had Doom on floppy disks. A few years later a family member would buy me the trilogy collectors edition and I'd get through all of them using the arrow keys. I started playing with wads and pk3's when I was 13/14 and played a LOT of WildWeasels Stranger mod. Then discovered zdaemon and played a few wads from that before playing on-again-off-again over the years up to today.

My younger brother is your age and he was actually the one who brought the copied floppy disks home and showed me Doom on our PC :)

Around 13-14 (1994-1995). I had the shareware version of Doom but the full version of Doom 2, so I played that more. My first experience with the other Doom episodes was the SNES version and that I grew to love the soundtrack of it, so I eventually purchased The Ultimate Doom later in 1995ish and things went on from there, eventually playing with front ends (D!Zone 2 specifically) and later using map editors from the disc.

Oh, I *still* have that CD of The Ultimate Doom in a CD holder...

Late... very late, at 33 (i'm 36 now). I was into FPS games in the late 90's and early 2000's, but i didn't play that many games during this period. Where i grew up, it wasn't popular at the time to have a home computer, so not many parents were willing to see their kid's logic of buying an expensive machine just for video games... not to mention that my folks weren't very fond of video games to begin with. Also the internet wasn't a big deal yet, so if you don't need a PC for work, you had no good reason to own one. That's why video game clubs were all the rage, and everyone was going there, from the poor to the rich kids. Me and my friends would save up all of our allowance for the school week, and then spend the whole weekend in the gaming cafe. We got to play everything, from 16 bit consoles and Playstation, to popular PC titles. By the time i started visiting these clubs (there was one right next to my shool), Half-Life, Quake 2 and Unreal were the popular FPS games. The closest thing to Doom that i got play, was when Serious Sam came out, which has some similarities with Doom, mainly the arsenal and some of the monsters.

I'm not entirely sure, but i think the first time i heard about Doom was around 2005 , when the movie came out (embarrasing, i know). Even if someone had mentioned it to me before that, i can't remember it. In 2007 i bought my first PC but by this time my interest in FPS games had dropped significantly, as i got hooked on the RPG genre. It wasn't until 2020 where i decided to replay Half-Life 1, and the experience of revisiting the single player campaign felt so fresh, that i wanted to experience more classic shooters, and so i did a big marathon of 90's and early 2000's FPS titles, starting with Wolfenstein 3D. I don't exactly know why Doom stood out to me at the end and made me comeback for more. I guess the feeling and satisfaction of playing Doom is simply timeless, and i never seem to get tired of it, as i do with other games.

Back in the good old days of me being too young to do any serious work.

That would therefore make me 12 years old at the time I first started playing doom. It wasn’t till I was 14 that i decided i was fully engrossed into it.

I was 17 maybe 18, Doom was not long out, I'd stared longing at the screenshots in Gamesmaster magazine and then the guys in the office above the workshop I worked in got it and put it on the network in work. The store-room's crappy computer for spreadsheets was connected to the network so I would spend the next year or so playing Doom and then Doom2 on my lunchbreaks. The PC was awful and the game barely ran, no mouse and only system bleeps for sound but I loved it. Wasn't allowed to play death-match with the office guys though my computer slowed then all down.

played the shareware on a shovelware disc when i was around 4 years old or so. i wasn't actually allowed to play the game back then, but i eventually convinced my parents that playing the game had no ill effects on me. i was instantly hooked and got to play other FPS games back then like Dark Forces 1 and 2, Quake 2 and Unreal; i got the Doom Collector's Edition a few years after that. i didn't actually start playing mods for the game until around 2007-2008 though.

I don't exactly remember my age at the time, but I did have a very strange family member who was obsessed with the occult who thought the game looked interesting - because of the satanic imagery I'd assume - anyways he let me play it for a bit before telling me to get lost. I like to think that's when the seed was planted for me to enjoy le Doom.

2004/2005, I remember being SCARED of Doom 3 when I was 3/4 and I remember playing Doom via Doom95 and being pretty good at Hurt me Plenty and then later REALLY good at UV, then I got back into it when I rooted through my Grandpa's burnt disc collection in 2017, a lot of nights spend just playin it via Doom Legacy, then zDoom and then gZDoom.

10 or 11, I picked up DOOM 2016 on gamepads, didn't play much of the campaign, but had fun in snapmap. Too bad the snapmap servers went down 😔.
