Lucius Wooding Posted April 20, 2023 Personally I can't live without turbo doors. Turbo doors alone are enough of a reason to never make a Doom 1 map for me (unless I got Shanghaied into a strictly Doom 1 CP). They go all "whoosh" and are a huge quality of life thing as doors go; try running away from a cyberdemon and then having to wait for a slow ass door and you'll quickly learn of their glory. And there are a number of other useful line specials and features like lifts and expanded monster teleporters (though I generally prefer closets in my own stuff). But I could certainly make something with only Doom 1 enemies and no SSG. It'd probably be a fun project but I'd map in Boom or Doom 2 for certain because of the flexibility. The power fantasy gameplay, the wonderful SSG, and complex monster roster are all fine but are far outweighed by the line specials for me. You could make the same kind of claim that Boom or MBF or ZDoom or Quake or Unreal Engine 5 are better than either Doom or Doom 2 vanilla, and with all their flexibility it's hard to argue (just pointless). Doom 1 not being as popular doesn't mean there aren't good examples over time that have won Cacowards by their own merits. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
IncompA Posted April 20, 2023 Man, this thread has reminded me that I should get to work on my DOOM 1 WAD. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sound2000 Posted April 20, 2023 I think the "Romero" style of mapping suits perfectly on doom 1. You dont have many powerful enemies on doom 1 so you have to be criative with traps, and making the player starving for ammo. Doom 2 is way more echletic, for obvious reasons. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Everything he has made for Doom 1 is fantastic and worth your time. RonnieJamesDiner Posted April 21, 2023 (edited) I feel slightly embarrassed. I spent the majority of that clip just thinking, "Wait... what? There were no megaspheres in Doom 1?" Someone revoke my Classic Doom card, please. Edited April 21, 2023 by RonnieJamesDiner 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
DNSKILL5 Posted April 21, 2023 Imagine trying to not only make a Doom WAD but also limiting yourself to only using the shareware assets (only sprites, walls, etc seen in E1). I think that would certainly be an interesting mapping exercise. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Somniac Posted April 21, 2023 Have there actually been any recent WADs that either used only shareware, or only registered Doom stuff at the maximum? I'm pretty sure all of my favourite Doom 1 wads introduce tougher enemies and/ or E2/E3 content earlier, and make use of Ultimate Doom actions and specials (fast doors and sector effect 17, both of which I'm pretty sure I couldn't live without.) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

TheSlipgateStudios Posted April 21, 2023 From what i've played of Doom 1 Megawads, i'd say people do know how to make wads based off of it! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
hybridial Posted April 21, 2023 Deathless is probably the best content I've played for Doom 1. Keeping the levels short and compact generally is the best way to keep Doom 1's limitations from biting. That said, No End in Sight was certainly ambitious and great, and Doom the Way Id Did is kind of like playing the original only episodes 2 and 3 specifically are way, way better (Sorry Sandy) But those are kind of the only Doom 1 sets in my rotation. Kinda can't bring myself to play DTWID-LE because it's theme is too similar to DTWID for obvious reasons, and 2022 A Doom Odyssey felt too much like it was falling into the trap of being too abstract and limited and my mind just quickly glazed over trying to play it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The wad I mentioned in the video "The Room Below" is from 2013 and does have e2/3 content but it doesn't use any doom2/udoom line/sector actions: On 4/20/2023 at 11:00 PM, CAM-7EA said: Imagine trying to not only make a Doom WAD but also limiting yourself to only using the shareware assets (only sprites, walls, etc seen in E1). I think the only way it could work would be to add lots and lots of rockets. On 4/20/2023 at 9:31 PM, RonnieJamesDiner said: I feel slightly embarrassed. Those guys are obviously good mappers and I'm not picking on them, but I distinctly remember the maps being mainly focused on shotgun/chaingun gameplay, and that's the point I was trying to make in the video. imo "traditional map design" in doom1 can't keep up with doom2's new assets and so the rocket launcher/plasmagun/bfg need to be the main focus instead of the shotgun/chaingun.
