I'm not a huge fan of Pink Floyd, I just happened to listen to all of their albums from the '60s and the '70s for a bunch of reasons. I used to have a couple of friends who were really into music from both of those decades and they thought that the debut album of Pink Floyd was the best, when I asked one of them why he told me that he thought that The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was one album that he could feel like listening to every day of the week, on the other hand, he thought that some of the stuff that came after it was music that he could listen to while he was in a certain mood. I can definitely relate to that, since it happens to me with other media, like I usually prefer Resident Evil REmake over the original Resident Evil, but without the hilarious voice acting sometimes RE1 Remake becomes too dark and brooding for me, even if overall I think its a masterpiece. I think that both Arnold Layne and See Emily Play are fantastic singles, and Jugband Blues is quite...interesting, having the context behind its recording in mind. Besides of these two guys I've mentioned, I had another friend who recommended me to watch The Wall because he thought that the movie "gives you back your childhood innocence only to take it from you again worse" and I did. The first song by Pink Floyd I listened to was Comfortably Numb and its still my favorite one by them. Afterwards I started listening to more by them and watched The Wall a second time because of a certain person...hard for me to talk about, but luckily I didn't attach too many negative memories of her to the music to not want to listen to Pink Floyd. Lol. I remember really liking this from Animal: Edited October 28, 2022 by MrFroz 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted October 28, 2022 (edited) Me, I knew about Pink Floyd for the longest time and I was definitely familiar with Dark Side of the Moon and "Another Brick In The Wall Part II", but it is only after I have seen Dan Olson's take on Doug Walker's mindboggling "review" of The Wall that I have become a big fan of Pink Floyd, especially its late 70s to early 80s period. While the biting political messages were coming from Roger Waters towards the end (Pink Floyd became much cleaner and calmer following his departure), they still resonate with me and I find myself listening to them whenever I am angry or frustrated as a form of catharsis. I still like the Gilmour era well enough and early Pink Floyd certainly has its moment, but in the latter case, it feels like a completely different band! Yeah Sid Barret stuffs pretty far out, knew a guy who like early Floyd best but it's a little strange for my taste. "I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like" Have you ever heard this : It won't display but it's Eddie Vedder with Roger Waters, hands down my favorite version of this song, Eddie absolutely kills it. Rudolph Posted October 28, 2022 It very much sucks that the degradation of Syd Barret's mental health inspired some of Pink Floyd's best works. :S Just like how Roger Waters losing his father during WWII made him into the artist that he has become, I suppose... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wyrmwood Posted October 28, 2022 Yes it's sad, I'm not sure how much of his mental problems were self inflicted though, from what I read he had a pretty big LSD addiction problem. "Wish you were here" is my favorite Floyd track though is is sad when you understand what it's about. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I used to be a Marilyn Manson fan, and I remember reading that Pink Floyd was an inspiration for him, and after seeing The Wall this made a lot more of sense: 1 hour ago, Wyrmwood said: Yeah Sid Barret stuffs pretty far out, knew a guy who like early Floyd best but it's a little strange for my taste. I had a dentist who worked on the same block where I live, and he was obsessed with Pearl Jam. His knowledge of Pearl Jam was encyclopedic, and if he listened to something that wasn't Pearl Jam, it at the very least had a connection with one of the band members. Like for example Mad Season (same guitarist). He also knew about the West Memphis Three because one of them had a writing credit for the self-titled Pearl Jam album. I used to be a big fan like I said of Manson and Nirvana as well, but eventually I became more interested in other type of artists or others that influenced them or were putting music at the same period as them. Music can be a rather unpredictable journey, sometimes. Edited October 28, 2022 by MrFroz 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's incredibly varied he's even recorded an album of Ukulele songs and his soundtrack for Into the Wild was better than the movie. His latest album Earthling is really good too, doesn't sound too much like Pearl Jam, he just does his own thing. It's always nice when artists grow with their music instead of just making more of what they had success with. I was big Nirvana fan too, it'll always be sad what Kurt did. At least it freed Dave Grohl to focus on Foo Fighters though, these days, to be honest I'd rather listen to them. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

And Jeremy is kind of hard to listen, especially seeing the video, because I used to really look like the kid from the video in my preteens. The unplugged was great, though, and I really liked the performance of Black there. The only other albums I have listened to in full were Vs. and Riot Act, the latter of which I like this one very much: The Beatles reference there is mighty, and the instrumentation from 1:56 to 2:13 just thugs my heart. Also Lost Dogs has plenty of interesting stuff, like Don't Gimme No Lip. I remember liking a lot Pearl Jam Twenty, and might in fact watch it again sometime in the nearby future, I just loved the footage with Eddie and Kurt at the VMAs and what Eddie said at a concert the show after they learned Kurt died, not to mention the homage they paid to Andrew Wood early in the film. Didn't heard the solo stuff, but I'm sure it will be worthy. Edited October 29, 2022 by MrFroz 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wyrmwood Posted October 29, 2022 @MrFroz if you don't mind me asking how did you post a Pearl Jam video but when I did it (and it wasn't technically Pearl Jam) I ended up posting a black box for copyright reasons. I mean it works but yours plays without leaving Doomworld. Am I doing something wrong? Not so internet savy! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jello Posted October 29, 2022 It's an oldie, but a goodie: The nickname thread got me thinking about the Dead Kennedys again. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
MrFroz Posted October 29, 2022 I also get a black box: Guess its really unavailable for playing it here. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Thanks, watched the vid you posted by Marilyn Manson by way, thought I wasn't into his music but actually enjoyed it. Might have check more of his stuff. knifeworld Posted October 29, 2022 Recently discovered this after hearing a MIDI rendition of it, I just had to find the actual song itself. Previous to this I'd only heard Blue Monday. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wyrmwood Posted October 30, 2022 Bought EA games Need for Speed : Heat, a few weeks back (don't worry I'm not in the wrong thread) because it was cheaper than a bag of chips. Turns out it's quite a fun game with not too much EA stuff/shit but the soundtrack is full on awful. So I just jumped on Spotify and made my own, was really happy with the results up to 180 songs that are good for driving fast. I'll only post a few : 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
