Thelokk Posted August 29, 2022 This Umebayashi song might remind you of an old TV ad, directed by Wong Kar Wai. Hard to say which version is best: 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

DavitW Posted August 31, 2022 (edited) A groovy instrumental with a piano solo that just makes you feel good. I tried to link a youtube video, but it's [Do You] Want Some of This by a band called Stuff. Daytime Waitress Posted August 31, 2022 (edited) Is this what your were trying to link, Davit? All my youtube links tend to automatically embed, so I hope someone more knowledgeable can sort your end out. I can think of few lyricists other than Tom Waits who could capture that soul-rending feeling of everything being completely fucked and being mentally, physically and emotionally incapable of going on. What a godsdamned gorgeous line, "God used me as a hammer, boys/To beat his weary drum today". Paradoxically, I can't think of anything more inspiring than being in that hole and knowing you have to press on - hearing that rasp, that snarl: "hoist that rag". Thank you, Jello. Murdoch Posted August 31, 2022 I have been aware of this gentleman's work for some time. When he cut loose on the classics, he was awesome, but his originals never quite did it for me. Until now. This whole album is superb, an absolute must for blues fans. This song is probably my favourite; smooth as butter and would not sound out of place on a Robert Cray album. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Paradoxically, I can't think of anything more inspiring than being in that hole and knowing you have to press on - hearing that rasp, that snarl: "hoist that rag". Thank you, Jello. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. It's a very hauntingly beautiful song, and Tom Waits was relatively vocal about his opposition to the US going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and jingoism in general. And it really hit home when the album was released back in 2004, because I knew people who ended up going over to Iraq, they came back, but they weren't the same. It broke part of them. Anyway, I know I've said Mule Variations is my favorite Tom Waits album, but Real Gone is damn close, and I think it's probably the better album, it's a perfect refinement of Waits' musical style. I still love Mule Variations, but Real Gone is an absolute masterpiece. Even if "Sins of My Father" is 10 minutes long, it never gets old, at least not to me. And I've always thought it was really brazen to put such a slow, methodical, and extremely long song as track 3 on an album; but it works. It's really impressive that he released it two years after releasing Alice and Blood Money in the same year, both of which are great albums. I hope he doesn't go out with Bad as Me being his last studio album though. It's good, but it's not in the same ballpark as previous records. Edit: My favorite line from Hoist That Rag will always be "Well, we stick our fingers in the ground/heave and turn the world around".
