Woody101 Posted April 22, 2023 Hi, I play Doom and use an XBox Controller - problem is the movement is too fast side to side and kind of jerky. Gets worse when running. Been trying settings but not sure what affects what - here are mine. Seems like high sensitivity makes it worse. I want to slow down my lateral movement.. help! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jello Posted April 22, 2023 (edited) I don't really know what you're trying to do. I occasionally use a wireless 360 controller with GZDoom, and I just tried your settings and it doesn't work at all. Your left X axis, which you should be using for strafing has 0 sensitivity, and it's inverted, which doesn't matter, because at 0 sensitivity it's not going to even move. And the left Y isn't set to do anything, so you can't move forwards and backwards anyway. The right thumb X should probably be set to turning, but with 0 sensitivity it's not going to do anything. And you probably don't want it inverted, unless you want to turn left when you move your stick right. But I think I see your problem, hopefully: if you set something at 0 sensitivity, it's not going to do anything. So I took a couple of screenshots of what I generally use, and you can adjust the sensitivity to your liking, but just don't set it at 0. The first is if you don't want to use the right stick to look up and down, the second is if you do. Keep in mind, if you do want to use the right stick for looking up and down, and you want it to be inverted (up looks down, down looks up, like all good people should use on a controller) if you set it to a value above zero, it turns invert off. So you have to set it to what you want, then turn invert on, and it'll come back as a negative number. Hence why mine is at -0.400. Anyway, I hope this helps. Just looking at your settings, you've set your sensitivity so low that it's not going to do anything. And generally you do want lower sensitivity in older games, otherwise it just jerks around. Just don't set it at zero. Edit: Oh, and if your lateral/strafing on your left X axis seems like it's too sensitive, like you're instantly going from a slow crawl to a full run, increasing the dead-zone will help. I prefer keeping it at about .2, because you have some leeway to slowly move, but can quickly turn that to a full run. But if it still feels too fast, increase it to your liking. And of course all of those sensitivities depend on your individual controller, and how worn out it is. I've been using mine for over ten years now, and the sticks are getting worn out, so newer ones might need different settings adjusted. Alright, last edit: Keep in mind, having Always Run turned on will also affect your movement speed, so if you feel like you're moving too slow, make sure it's on. You can also bind "toggle run" to a key on your controller, like left d-pad or something if you want to be able to switch between them. Jello Posted April 22, 2023 (edited) You're very welcome, I hope at least something I said helps you out! Edit: And please let me know if it did or didn't. Edited April 24, 2023 by Jello 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Woody101 Posted April 25, 2023 Unfortunately it didn't - I tried so many combinations. I don't need to look up and down. I tried the XBox controller calibrate on Windows but no luck. Maybe it's the controller - I'll buy another one tomorrow and pray it works 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ningen666 Posted April 25, 2023 (edited) I used to use controllers when I used windows, but once you get used to a mouse, it makes EVERYTHING so much easier. The problem is it can be hard to learn, especially with a 2 button mouse. But if you happen to have a 4 button mouse lying around, use that, and bind the side buttons to open/use and jump! if not, bind the jump to space and keep open/use with e (or whatever feels more comfortable) Edited April 25, 2023 by Polyg0n 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
mancubian_candidate Posted May 27, 2023 (edited) Hey Woody, I play Doom using a PS5 controller and DS4 windows. Loads of good videos on how to set this up (this worked best for me). If I remember correctly, this will work with a 360 controller as well but could be wrong! I couldn't offer much more advice other than that, I kind of winged it with the config until I found something that worked for me Edited May 27, 2023 by mancubian_candidate 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Woody101 Posted May 27, 2023 I tried this at the beginning and couldn't get it to work but maybe I can give it another go - thanks for the advice 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
