I'm quite glad that you took a moment to assess the game at this point before stepping into the expansion.  The expansion levels are of similar quality, but they're just more levels so if judged as a 5 episode (plus a few levels) set the game can feel too long.  Although from what I can tell Heretic isn't too affected by it either way since opinion of the game is generally positive.  I do imagine though you probably will have a better opinion overall considering the game as two.  (Wolf3D definitely has this problem since I think a lot of people would like it more if they judged it as two games with 3 episodes each.)

Heretic is a pretty good game that I wish had more than three textures.
