MFG38 Posted April 28, 2023 (edited) Let's be real: anniversaries are pretty big occasions all things considered, in particular if the numbers involved are divisible by 5. And I realized a while back that two such anniversaries are occurring in my own case this year, both of them coincidentally related to Doom in one way or another. The first of them regards the pseudonym by which I'm known, as I'll have gone by the name MFG38 for a whopping 15 years in November. And the second anniversary - arguably the more important one when it comes to my involvement in this wonderful community - is the fact that May 29th will mark the 10th anniversary since my registration of a Doomworld account. Having been inspired by Jimmy and Tarnsman's events for their respective anniversaries, an idea has been brewing for a mapping contest of my own in a similar vein ever since last year. And now that my 10th Doomworld birthday (as well as my actual birthday!) is right around the corner, the time has come to announce MFG38's 10th Doomworld Birthday Bash! (I know I'm nowhere near as prolific here as the aforementioned, but fuck if I'm not going to try anyway.) So, much like the aforementioned mapping contests, this is an open-for-all mapping contest where YOU make a map for me to play and compete for a chance to win one of three prizes. Now, there is cash involved - I've set aside €300 for the prize pool, which will be divided among the Top 3 as follows: 1st Place: €150 2nd Place: €100 3rd Place: €50 The contest is open until my birthday on May 18th @ 8.00pm EEST/5.00pm UTC, and I'll be streaming playthroughs of all submissions over on my Twitch channel over the following weekend starting May 19th. How many streams I'll extend the playthroughs over will depend on the number of submissions I receive. The winners will be picked sometime in June, and they'll receive their respective prizes by PayPal shortly after! CONTEST RULES Please make a single-map wad for the Doom 2 IWAD. You may design your map in any format as long as it works in the latest version of GZDoom. Maps of all skill levels, visual styles and gameplay flavors are welcome, as long as they follow some (hopefully common-sense) considerations. Just read the rest of the rules, the really important parts are bolded. Maps should be balanced for single-player and the vanilla* gameplay experience - that is to say, they shouldn't rely on a specific gameplay mod being loaded alongside them. That said, the vanilla beastiary/weaponry can be expanded upon in a self-contained fashion (see the rule below). Custom content of all kinds - textures, music, even monsters - is allowed as long as they don't bloat the file size unreasonably and everything is contained in the same file as the map. Ideally, sources for any custom content should also be properly credited. As far as music goes, feel free to use one of my own MIDIs, but do note that doing so won't give you bonus points. As all submissions are going to be streamed on my Twitch channel, inclusion of any questionable content is best avoided. This includes but isn't limited to copyrighted music (even MIDI covers), displays of real-life gore, pornographic content etc. Rule of thumb: if in doubt, leave it out. Soft monster limit is 300. Maps MUST be submitted with the submission template below fully filled out! Copy and paste it into a new text file, fill it out and package it into a .zip file alongside the map, ideally sharing the same filename (minus the file extension). Any maps submitted without an accompanying text file or with missing information will be immediately disqualified. Deadline for map submissions is May 18th @ 8.00pm EEST or 5.00pm UTC. Make sure you have an active PayPal account where the prize money can be sent in the event that you receive a spot in the Top 3. This is the only way I will be able to send it and I won't wrestle with another service or method. SUBMISSION TEMPLATE Please use the following template when submitting your map: Map Name: [self-explanatory] Author: [also self-explanatory] Map Format: [vanilla? DiH? UDMF? alternatively target source port] Music: [name(s) and source(s) of custom music if applicable] Textures: [source(s) of custom textures if applicable] Other Stuff: [list any other custom content used and source(s) here if applicable] Difficulty Settings: [yes/no] Tested in: [list all source ports used to test the map here] Play Time: [estimated play time of the map] Description: [brief description of your map] Edited June 24, 2023 by MFG38 Winners announced 30 Quote Share this post Link to post

Essentially, yes, but I'm still somewhat firm with it in that you shouldn't go too far beyond it. About 20-25% over that margin is the ideal threshold to stay within. If the monster counts start reaching twice that amount and beyond, that marks a map as subject for disqualification. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
"JL" was too short Posted April 30, 2023 Question: After the contest is over, may we reuse the map, such as by further developing it for a standalone release? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

dmh094 Posted May 2, 2023 Hey, just a quick couple of questions, can we submit maps that are already made? And can we submit more than one map? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
MFG38 Posted May 2, 2023 The exact submission deadline for the contest has been decided. The deadline time is May 18th @ 8.00pm EEST, or 5.00pm UTC. 4 hours ago, dmh094 said: can we submit maps that are already made? I'm not entirely against people submitting maps they've already made, but ideally, maps should be made specifically for the contest. And if someone does submit a map they made before the contest, it's obviously subject to the same rules. 4 hours ago, dmh094 said: can we submit more than one map? Nope, only one map submission per person. Wouldn't be fair towards other participants if some people effectively had a higher chance of winning. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

dmh094 Posted May 15, 2023 (edited) Hello Doomers! and MFG38! I have a submission for the competition ready to go. However, there are a few hiccups here and there that I need to address. Firstly, I WAS making an original map, but the more I worked on it, the more I realized that I didn't have enough time to actually finish the damn thing (Me and my expanding maps!) So, what I have done instead is take one of my existing maps. (Stagnation, you might have seen it on this site.) and spent the last two weeks giving it a giant overhaul. (Working on navigation of the map, placing decorations, making new areas, adding lights, monster teleporters, fixing errors, completely redoing the texture work, fixing lighting, etc) And have decided to submit that because I genuinely think what I have done gives the whole map a new feel to it. However that being said, It still contains the same basic layout and progression (apart from a few areas) making it a hugely updated, already existing map. I understand If I lose points for not creating a wholly original work from scratch, as you have to take that into consideration, but the truth is, I'm pretty damn proud of what I have done to bring it up to date and quite frankly, excited for people to see what I have done with it. Basically what I am saying is, I don't expect to win, But I just hope you enjoy the map! (I will include screenshots of before and after the update to give you an idea of what has been done :) HAPPY HUNTING! Map Name: Stagnation Author: Daniel M. Hill Map Format: GZDOOM, DOOM2 (LIMIT REMOVING) Music: "It Breaths" by MFG38 Textures: Q1tex, Otex, Source: Realm667, Eviternity.wad Other Stuff: Lights and decorations Source: Realm667, Plasma Gun sound: Doom 3 Difficulty Settings: YES Tested in: GZDOOM Play Time: 25-30 minutes on Ultra-Violence difficulty Description: The layout is very square based, but circular in its presentation, with every new pathway wrapping back around to main area. It showcases medium to long range fights and includes shootable linedefs to open new areas. (THINK JOHN ROMERO'S SIGIL) It is set in a castle/hell like environment. MFG38 Posted May 15, 2023 @dmh094 Quick note (also for everyone else who happens to see this): you don't need to use the /idgames template for your readme file to submit to the contest, using the one given in the OP will suffice. I've gone ahead and copy-pasted the info from your post to a new text file so you won't have to resubmit the map. Just something I felt I should address. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

"JL" was too short Posted May 18, 2023 Map Name: The Frozen Years Author: jerrysheppy Map Format: GZDoom in UDMF. Music: "When Hell Freezes Over" by MFG38 (mostly just picked it for the name tbqh) Textures: 32-in-24; OTEX by Ola Björling (ukiro) Other Stuff: None Difficulty Settings: Some differences, but minimal. A UV playthrough was used to make sure it felt about right. I make no major warranties about other difficulties. Tested in: Tested with GZDoom 4.10. Play Time: Probably somewhere between 12 and 15 minutes for a moderately optimized 100% run? It's ~150 monsters and you do cover a lot of ground but shouldn't get completely lost. Description: A frozen cave system with an equally frozen fortress built into it, and something a bit more exotic lurking behind the surface. js-mfg3810dwbb-1.zip 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
