Don't ask me to put them in order. 9 Quote Share this post Link to post

S. P_A_Z, thanks for this thread! Edited May 12, 2023 by Geniraul Upgraded my list, as the thread had been transformed to 10 (or more) favorite albums instead of 5! [and no, it is not 5 factorial C:] 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
spineapple tea Posted April 29, 2023 Note: this is not a definitive list and is expected to change (likely by the end of the day) 1. V: The New Mythology Suite - Symphony X 2. Chaosphere - Meshuggah (Destroy Erase Improve/Catch Thirtythree can also swap into this spot depending on how I'm feeling) 3. Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good! - Megadeth 4. Inhuman Rampage - DragonForce (the one with Through the Fire and Flames) 5. Ride the Lightning - Metallica (can you believe I hadn't heard any of their albums except for their first and newest before this week?) Can't wait to look at this post in a mere two weeks and ask what the fuck was wrong with me. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

xScavengerWolfx Posted April 29, 2023 Hmmmm. This one is kinda hard because there's a lot of albums i like but i had to choose my top 5....i guess it would be something like this. 5. Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails 4. Toxicity by System of a down 3. Start a war by Static X 2. House of gold and bones pt. 1 and pt. 2 (i am including both because i like both of them) 1. ...And justice for all by Metallica So the reason why i like ...And justice for all album is because it was my second ever album i've heard by metallica. There first was black album (which i still have) but i went backwards into there album liberty and since i'm a long time fan i will say that if you want to get into them, i would say start with Master of puppets or ...And justice for all. I like ride the lighting but ...And justice for all is the one that really sticks out to me because i love the song To live is to die. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted April 29, 2023 (edited) Kraftwerk - Computerwelt (Computer World in the US) - Pretty much any Kraftwerk album could go here, but this one is a perfect representation of the inner life of a computer, and how computers affect the lives of humans. Iglooghost - Neo Wax Bloom - Chaotic energy from start to finish, it's a really fun listen. King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King - Probably the most normal pick on this list. I like the dramatic arrangements, the solos, and the attention to detail with its medieval theme. But back to weird electronica: Skee Mask - Compro - A perfect icy techno album to kick back and relax to. Autechre - Untilted - Slowly morphing and evolving electronic drum patterns, occasionally with minimal melodies on top but far from conventional. An absolutely fascinating listen. I must be the only Doomer who's this into electronic music. Oh well, I love being the weird one anyway. Edited April 29, 2023 by continuum.mid 16 Quote Share this post Link to post
DrOcsid Posted April 29, 2023 Favorites sure are hard, and it's even harder to order them in a specific way, but I'd probably pick something along the lines of: Talking Heads - Remain in Light LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver Gorillaz - Plastic Beach David Bowie - Station to Station The White Stripes - Elephant 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

hybridial Posted April 29, 2023 hm... it's not definite really but here goes Agalloch - Pale Folklore. The two following albums are generally considered bigger deals but I dunno, I think I like their debut the most. It's the most zen thing I've ever heard. Paradise Lost - Medusa. Not among their most popular albums I think but I absolutely love from beginning to end. The title track is beautiful, Fearless Sky is doom metal at it's peak and Blood and Chaos is an anthem for the ages. Swallow the Sun - New Moon. Yeah, I guess seeing Falling World live helps me pick this one. Hard to pick one album with a band this consistent but I will go with New Moon. Persefone - Core. Hard to put into words the splendour of this album. Just spectacular, a progressive opera based on the relationships of Demeter, Persephone and Hades. Be'lakor - Of Breath and Bone. They did three albums in a row that are borderline interchangeable because of how evenly amazing they are. That I picked this just means I'm in an In Parting and By Moon and Star mood. Sublime. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gregor Posted April 29, 2023 (edited) These don't necessary contain my favorite songs (though a lot of them can be found in there) but are actual albums i love to delve into like a good book i keep coming back to or a great movie. They also have special meaning to me because of what they meant to me when i first discovered them. 1. Franz Schubert - Die Winterreise (1827) 2. Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) 3. The Beatles - White Album (1968) 4. REM - Automatic for the People (1992) 5. Daft Punk - Discovery (2001) (6. John Frusciante - Shadows Collide with People (2004)) - i don't really listen to much of his music anymore but there was a time when it meant the world to me. "Die Winterreise" by Schubert isn't an album in the modern sense, since it wasn't recorded by the composer for obvious reasons, but it's very much an album in the sense of a connected collection of songs. In fact, it's very much a concept album, telling a complete story of a heartbroken man, leaving his home in a winter night, looking for his death. I love the version by Fischer-Dieskau from 1972. ZeMystic Posted April 29, 2023 1. The Afterman: Descension - Coheed and Cambria 2. Maps of Non-Existent Places - Thank You Scientist 3. Periphery IV: Hail Stan - Periphery 4. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd 5. Run The Jewels 3 - Run The Jewels I totally could've added multiple albums done by the same band, but I wanted to keep things interesting. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deadwing Posted April 29, 2023 Porcupine Tree - Deadwing Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the moon Genesis - Selling england by the pound Supertramp - Crime of the century Riverside - Love, Fear & Time Machine 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted April 29, 2023 Gwar - Violence Has Arrived Kraftwerk - Techno Pop Toadies - Rubberneck Immortal - Sons of Northern Darkness Daft Punk - Discovery At least for today anyway. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
PsychEyeball Posted April 29, 2023 Frank Zappa And The Mothers of Invention - Roxy & Elsewhere Probably my all-time favorite Zappa album right next to "The Grand Wazoo". I picked this one because I feel like it's the most complete Zappa album ever, with the best lineup of musicians he ever assembled in Napoleon Murphy Brock, George Duke, Tom Fowler, Ruth Underwood and Chester Thompson. This is Zappa at his proggiest (even though he never considered his music to be prog-styled) while keeping a healthy dose of humor and stage antics. Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. II The first album I ever bought with my own money and while I rarely ever listen to it much anymore, this music forever will remain engrained in my mind. Very freaky and minimalistic ambient music, mixing it up with chaotic soundscapes and every once in a while, the most beautiful disarming music ever heard. The newest version of the album on sale online at Warp serves as a definitive version, including bonus tracks like Hankie and the meditative Stone in Focus (although the tracks on that release have no names, they're just all numbered) Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway A masterpiece of the 70s prog movement. Set up as a very abstract play and featuring a strange story about the tales of a young man stuck in an alternative reality New York. Beautiful art rock that knows when to hack it up, but also when to remain more quiet and moody. This is often considered as the moment when Genesis died, which I wholly disagree with. They still would make great music after this, but this remains their watershed moment and would never be topped. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet Probably the heaviest album Porcupine Tree would make in their prog metal phase that started with In Absentia and by far the most focused. Contains Anesthetize, which will forever remain the best song they ever made, clocking in at a massive 17 minutes. Half of this album would become crowd favorites at live shows and for good reason. Excellent mixture of moods, paranoia and crunching metal riffs. Boards of Canada - Geogaddi The second full album they made would be their most developed and darkest. None of its 66 minutes and 6 seconds (muahahahaw) runtime ever feels wasted and while the album mostly treads ambient psychedelic territory, it is the kind more apt to give you nightmares and anxiety. While their first album seemed interested in bringing back distorted shots of nostalgia and childhood, this is more interested in being a bad trip. 19 Quote Share this post Link to post

smeghammer Posted April 29, 2023 Hmmm... top 5 albums... That depends on state of mind a lot, but always high are classic rock, with excellent vocalists. I won't go with the obvious Maiden or Saxon stuff... Triumph - Surveillance - The man's range is extraordinary Black Sabbath - Tyr - anything with Tony Martin singing. SO underrated: Marillion - Script for a Jesters Tear: And I'll have to go with Black Sabbath, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath as well... And let's go with Michael Kiske: 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
DynamiteKaitorn Posted April 29, 2023 Gonna force myself to NOT pick 5 albums by The Killers and instead go for 1 album from 5 different bands/artists. Here's my 5 in no specific order: The Killers - Battleborn (Pressure Machine is SUPER close though) Gorillaz - Plastic Beach Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory (Meteora & Minutes to Midnight were close) Mike Oldfield - Songs of Distant Earth Kaiser Chiefs - Stay Together (Employment was close) 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Frank Ocean - Blonde The top 3 are pretty locked in, but the last two could swap with a few other albums. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

EPICALLL Posted April 29, 2023 (edited) 1. Queen - Innuendo (1991) [admittedly mainly because of it's flagship song; "The Show Must Go On"] 2. Jack Stauber - Pop Food (2017) [sound design > writing] 3. Eminem - The Eminem Show (2002) [for some strange reason, I've always preferred this to MMLP, I'm still not sure why] 4. Weezer - Pinkerton (1996) [If you are one of those people who don't like this album, I have one thing to say to you; Why?] 5. System of a Down - Toxicity (2001) [I love me some Progressive Rock mixed in with Metal] Honorable Mentions: 1. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (2010) [This album bleeds experimental blood, and I love it for that] 2. Weezer - The Blue Album (1994) [Who doesn't like the blue album?] 3. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) [There's the MMLP, easily the most compelling Em album, but like I said, sound > writing] 4. C418 - Minecraft Volume Beta (2013) [Easily the best video game OST, no competition] 5. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) [Progressive rock turned up to 11, just that simple] Boom. Done. I can move on now. Edited April 29, 2023 by EPICALLL 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
