What are your 10 favorite albums (or more if you want) ?

Recommended Posts

Well that's easy for me:

  • Nick Drake - Pink Moon
  • Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
  • Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

And other than that, i prefer single songs rather than a whole album. Not all songs on a album are bangers. Michael Jackson comes close though. The problem is that i enjoy general music so i love both dance tracks, to vaporwave, to country rock to symphonic metal.

I mention the above 3 albums because Nick Drake is one of the very few musicians where the text is more touching than the song itself, whereas with all the other music i have listened, it is the other way around.

Just the song River Man is strangely accurate: The pace of the song is like a slow moving river.

This is difficult, it'd probably be easier for me to make a list of my 30 favorite albums. I can only listen to an album for so long before I start getting tired of it, so this is far from a definite "best of all time"-type of list, more so a "this is what I'm currently listening to the most"-list. Also not allowing myself to put multiple albums by the same band on here, otherwise King Gizz would probably make up at least 60% of this (their discography is so diverse, it's like listening to five different bands!).
For the moment I'm gonna go with...

12 Bar Bruise - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
Speaking in Toungues - Talking Heads
Street Worms - Viagra Boys
A Laughing Death in Meatspace - Tropical Fuck Storm
Juju - Siouxsie and the Banshees

I’m sorry P_A_Z, I can’t do that.

There are too many albums I should place in this list, even if I pick one in each style I like.

Maybe five albums by style?

Nice! Surprised to see Charly García here. I've been really getting into the guy recently, specially Sui Generis.

Nice, i got the chance to see Nito Mestre live some years ago. He played the entirety of Sui Generis Vida album, one of the most emotive shows I have been.

Charly is great either solo or in bands (make sure to check "la máquina de hacer pájaros" if you haven't, pretty great prog rock band after leaving Sui Generis, but before starting Seru Giran), but personally I tend to listen his solo stuff more often.

While the Unplugged album is my favorite, and probably my favorite MTV Unplugged album, I really like some of his early solo stuff such Piano Bar and Parte de la Religión.

5. From the Lions Mouth (The Sound)

Didn't expect to see this come up! Its an amazing record that not enough people know about.

As for me, that's a question I could tie myself in knots over because I have so many favourite albums, but let me try and pick 5 at random:

dISEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence into the Peripheral: There's extreme metal, and then there's this. The most crushing, brutal, but also surreal, pyschedelic and at times ethereal metal album ever made. Nothing comes close.

The Cure - Seventeen Seconds: I love all the early Cure stuff but this one is the best. I love how spiky and cold it sounds, I listen to this a lot in autumn.

Peter Gabriel - Music from the film "Birdy": I've never seen this film, but Peter Gabriel creates such a visual soundtrack it doesn't matter. There are so many interesting textures in this album, from cavernous bass and ambience to shards of broken voices and tribal percussions. As an aside, Doomwiki lists one of the tracks as a possible inspiration for "Opening to Hell", which makes sense if you listen to it.

King Crimson - Discipline: I love a lot of prog and 80s music, so prog + new wave = ridiculously complex, super catchy weird as hell jazz pop is right up my street. This album was a huge influence on a lot of prog and tech-death metal bands later on too.

Basic Channel - BCD: The original and best in monolothic minimal techno, hypnotic rhythms and ambient textures. There's a couple of real belters on here but most of it is more of the ambient side.

That was really difficult and took me way longer than I'm willing to admit :p so many others I could have mentioned.

Honourable mentions: "Pyramid" - Alan Parson's Project, "In Absentia" - Porcupine Tree.

Nice taste man, Pyramid is such an underrated album.

Back in the early 2000s there was a music store near home that had "an album of the month" they would discount. I used to get recommendations of things I had not heard before. Pyramid was one the best ones I got, and turned me into an Allan Parsons fan.

Pink Moon is great. While I enjoy all of Nick Drake's albums, I have a sweet spot for the minimalistic masterpiece. Things behind the sun is my favorite song of his.

Cool! I love the Vida album. I still have to check his solo career, but I will for sure :).

Before I got sick, I had lots of albums from the late 70's and 80's. Some artists that I enjoyed were Foreigner, Loverboy, INXS, A Flock of Seagulls, The Motels, Billy Idol, Bad Company, Journey, U2, Rush, Tom Petty, ZZ Top, Scorpions, Skid Row, Mötley Crüe, Dokken and Judas Priest to name a few. Even though these bands had some amazing songs and singles they never had an album that I could listen to all the way through without skipping any songs. These artists had great vocalists and musicians and were extremely skilled in their craft. From that time period here are 5 albums that I cannot skip a single song, because every song is great.

1. TheCars.png.8318b9d986feb8b512e0f07ffaa770c4.png The Cars: The Cars

This album and "Heartbeat City" are their best albums in my opinion. This album, however, is a masterpiece and every song is extremely well crafted. Here you can find the track listing.

2. VanHalen.jpg.31172497ed95201dd4bf0ec400a1dff6.jpg Van Halen: Van Halen

This album is one of my top 3 favorite albums by Van Halen. Every song is extremely well crafted especially from a debut album. When I was in high school, I carefully hand drew their logo from this album and placed it in the cover of my notebook. Here you can find the track listing.

3. VanHalenII.jpg.86b335ef4ac14072f81d78ef963d6f7d.jpg Van Halen: Van Halen II

Most bands have a really good first impression to where their first album is their best work ever. Not Van Halen, they continued their winning formula into their second album. In my opinion this album is just as good as their debut. Here you can find the track listing.

4. VanHalen1984.jpg.581a11b8637d0502857d2f5e1bb216c6.jpg Van Halen: 1984

Their previous 3 albums, in my opinion weren't as strong as their first 2. This album, however, is just as great as those 2. This album is their most unique album because it mixed Eddie's signature guitars, David's vocals and well-crafted synthesizers. Unfortunately, David hated the synth, but it worked very well for this album. Here you can find the track listing.

5. SlideItIn.jpg.ff3ecd1654edc45acc7c8851871a6405.jpg Whitesnake: Slide It In

Before Whitesnake made it big with their "Whitesnake" album they released this gem onto the world. This album stood at a crossroads. It stood between their older blues rock sound and their newer hard rock, metal and radio friendly sound. Because it mixed blues rock with hard rock and a sprinkling of metal influence I think the album sounded better than any other album that they ever released. Not to discredit anything that they released afterwards, because "Still of the Night" is a great song, but this album is just amazing. Here you can find the track listing.

Next time I will suggest more 90's albums and artists.

4. Didjits - Hornet Pinata
5. Filmmaker - Spectral

It's hard but I tried:

Autechre - Confield

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
Radiohead - OK Computer
Wolves in the Throne Room - Primordial Arcana
PinocchioP - Best Album 2009-2020

I used to be big into album listening, but streaming services have severely disrupted that, so a lot of the new music I like isn't really album-attached. That's why I had to cheat and pick PinocchioP's enormous greatest hits album with over 2 hours of bangers. ;)

MORE!!!

Cattle Decapitation - The Anthropocene Extinction
Dredg - El Cielo
Bola - Fyuti

Plaid - Double Figure
Autechre - Every other album that isn't Confield, especially Exai and Draft 7.30 and Chiastic Slide and ...

I agree with most before me, it's hard to decide. There are many great albums out there, so I've tried to narrow it down to the few that I really love. They may not be perfect albums, or really that good. But I love them, for personal reasons.

1. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

2. KMFDM - Symbols

3. Nomeansno - Wrong (although I have to tie this with 0+2=1, is that okay?)

4. Victims Family - Apocalicious

5. Murder City Devils - In Name and Blood (this one is a track list)

5: ELO - Secret Messages
4: Hall and Oates - The Very Best of (yeah, for once it actually was the best of)

3: Dragonforce - Killer Elite
2: Static X - Machine

1: Rick Astley - Whenever You Need Somebody

(Yes I am serious)

3. VIQ- Last path

4. DEADLIFE- Bionic chrysalis

5.Dance with the dead- Out of body

In no particular order,

  • Foreground Eclipse - Stories That Last Through The Sleepless Nights
  • KikuoHana - Dai-Ni-Maku
  • Kikuo - Kikuo Miku 6
  • Fit for an Autopsy - The Sea of Tragic Beasts
  • Leprous - Tall Poppy Syndrome

There's probably a bit of recency bias with a few of the picks but they're all really stellar albums in my book so that's okay.

My top five albums constantly change week-per-week, and vary depending on mood, my most recent musical discoveries, and whatever else. Here's what they are as of writing:

  1. The Beach Boys - Holland
  2. Crash Test Dummies - The Ghosts That Haunt Me/God Shuffled His Feet (I love both equally, I think)
  3. Children of the Corn - The Single
  4. The Upsetters - Super Ape

  5. The Beatles - Let It Be... Naked (or whatever fan-edit of the pre-Spector Let It Be you prefer)

Yayy some beach boys love. Funky Pretty is amazing. I'm curious on what are your thoughts on the fairy tale?

Mt. Vernon's good. It's a fascinating listen, and easily one of Brian's most unique pieces and best post-SMILE (alongside Rio Grande).

This is SO incomplete. Picking just one album to represent ANY of these bands is criminal, and I'm not even able to fit in my love for NIN, Zeppelin, my love of funny music like Weird Al, my love of heavy music like Lamb of God and so forth... But I love all of these, they all impacted me profoundly!
