LadyMistDragon Posted May 3, 2023 (edited) Was this something that started after Doom 2016's release after the accompanying surge in popularity in classic Doom or something? The PC gaming I did from 2014-2020 was very spotty so I probably missed something. Edited May 8, 2023 by LadyMistDragon 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Metal_Slayer Posted May 4, 2023 Probably after Brutal Doom released in 2012. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted May 4, 2023 Do you mean gameplay mods, or just modding in general like new maps? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted May 4, 2023 I guess map sets, though they can have built-in mods as well. I wasn't really asking about Brutal Doom or anything like Russian Overkill. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I vaguely recall mapping for Doom being covered in an article in the UK version of PC Gamer that accompanied their review of Doom II. So circa late 1994. HorseJockey Posted May 4, 2023 I started to notice it after Doom (2016) came out. Allot of the articles seem like self promotion rather than a map or mod that the writer found organically. There have been a few in RockPaperShotgun that seemed to be written from a "hey, just found this map and wanted to share" perspective. More often than not though, they read like adverts for the map or mod. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

I did wonder if it was connected to the release of the Unity engine in any way, but it just seemed logical much of that started not long after 2016's release. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tristan Posted May 4, 2023 (edited) Doom 2 In Name Only was featured in PC Gamer, RPS, Kotaku about a month after its release in 2014. I'm not sure why this WAD in particular was the one to get the media coverage, and frankly I wish it hadn't been, but this was just after the very first teaser for Doom 2016 at that year's E3, so there was a lot of hype around Doom even then. First time I saw an article on a project I joined, I was so hyped but then I read the little note at the end that says: Quote Disclosure: Robert Yang, who has written for RPS about Quake and level design, has a map in this pack. Biodegradable Posted May 4, 2023 I just wish game journos tried a little harder when it comes to covering the Doom community's efforts, rather than what some lazy sod can manage to bash out in fifteen minutes, fudging their way through it like a homework assignment the night before it's due. On the one hand, it has been awesome to see people like Danlex and Cheello receive some mainstream news attention for their efforts, but on the other hand, it's really lame considering what little effort appears to be put into these articles. RockPaperShotgun's article about Voxel Doom isn't even 500wds and Lullaby's is even more pathetic with a measly 145wds. They have all the means to go more in-depth, even try and score a brief interview with any of the modders/mappers whose work they've found, which would be pretty easy; but often they seem uninterested in expanding beyond, "I found this Doom thing and it's kinda neat. Okay, where's my cheque?" I'm definitely in the wrong business. This gaming journalism schtick looks piss-easy. 8 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted May 4, 2023 Ancient Aliens had an article shortly before Doom 2016's release (by the same person who wrote the D2INO article for PC Gamer), though it reads like the author just skimmed the forum post and didn't even download the WAD. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
s4f3s3x Posted May 4, 2023 I think Eviternity also received quite some attention on gaming sites. That's how I found out about it in the first place : D 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
namsan Posted May 4, 2023 (edited) I can remember that 2015 mod you can take a "selfie" in Doom was featured in lots of online articles for some reason. Edited May 4, 2023 by namsan grammar 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yeah, the day that mod released was the day where Doomworld had the most logged-in users at once. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
HorseJockey Posted May 8, 2023 So this was just posted and I thought it was sincere, speaking of Doom related PC Gamer articles. https://www.pcgamer.com/great-moments-in-pc-gaming-making-your-own-doom-levels/ I thought it was an interesting read, at least a more interesting than a two paragraph piece about a level. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

What? You expect a game journalist to actually play a video game?! Too busy making spelling mistakes... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Wyrmwood Posted May 14, 2023 In the UK version there was definitely an article about modding classic Doom prior to Doom 16 being announced. It focused almost entirely on game-play modifications, some things I remember being mentioned were Brutal Doom (of course), selfie sticks and pirate Doom. Looking back I wish they had showed more mapsets, probably would've found my way back to Doom much sooner. Think this would of been around 2013-2014, it's the only reason I would of known of Brutal Doom and when Doom16 was announced and shown I remember wondering if that mod had been an influence on it. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted May 14, 2023 Dominic Tarason has contributed regularly to sites like PCGamer and RPS, and usually has his fingers quite closely on the pulse of the FPS modding scene. He wrote about MyHouse for PCGamer quite recently, for example. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted May 14, 2023 I remember that Vuvuzela Doom got some gaming press attention, despite being a low-effort meme mod that the author, IIRC, quickly deleted in embarrassment; and who even remembers the vuvuzela craze? That was back in 2010... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
