Has anyone made their own custom Doom map "Mixtape"?

Recommended Posts

Like making a custom WAD for themselves, but using maps from other projects and mixing them into a custom campaign for themselves. And if so, is it generally easy to do? I'm looking to do it myself.

I haven’t personally done what you’re describing myself, but it would be very easy to do if the maps are just using vanilla assets. Just open the wads up in Slade, copy the maps you want over into a new wad, rename them to be in the order you want, and save.

Easy to do? Yes, if the maps all follow the same sort of format. If they’re all vanilla compatible maps for example, that would be simple enough. It would take a bit more effort to put maps from more advanced WADs and projects, though, as you’d have to ensure you’re not breaking anything.

Is it ethical? Well, shovelware disc of the past basically did this sort of thing, maybe not all inside a new WAD, but they put together a “mixtape” of sorts by collecting WADs off the internet and putting them all on a disc. So today, making a compilation WAD would be somewhat the same sort of idea. The difference is if you’re doing it for personal use, then that’s all fine and dandy as it’s not leaving your computer, but if you try to distribute it, for money or for free, then that’s when it will get complicated. You would want to get the map author’s permission to include their levels in the repackaged compilation as a download, and if it were to be sold they would not only need to a give consent but would also deserve a cut in the money for their work.

Thankfully I do have intentions for personal use as the permission situ can be a cause for concern otherwise, is there anything unethical about say for example, if I showed my playlist but didn't upload the actual WAD/PK3?

I have a rule of thumb of never using other people's work into my own wads. That's just being lazy in my option.

Now if we're talking remixing your own wad from a project(s) and making levels out of pieces of it then yes, hell i'm doing that for ep. 2 of my own Ultimate Doom wad right now. Is it lazy copying and pasting your own work, re texturing it and stuff? Yes but at least i'm stealing my own idea from myself and not blatantly ripping off someone else work and calling it my own.

I say if it your own maps from projects you've done then yes go for it, but if it other's maps from projects then no, your just being lazy copying and pasting and redoing textures and stuff.

Completely understand what you're saying and I completely respect it. My particular case while using other people's, is actually for personal use only, there are no plans on releasing it at all as of course, permissions being the main reason.

I took WadSmoosh and smashed together Doom, Doom 2, all of Final Doom, and SIGIL, but added NRFTL, Master Levels, Lost Episode, and D64 in Doom 2 for an entire uninterrupted journey of Doomguy with custom text screens and Community MIDI packs for Final Doom to tie it together. It’s a blast.

I've said this before but it would be cool if source ports had a "playlist" feature that would allow you to do this and even distribute playlists without distributing other people's work without permission or causing copyright infringement.

I would definitely do a 'mixtape' wad of my own cancelled/unfinished maps from other projects.

In the meantime this might be something that could plausibly be added to DoomLauncher. It has some similar features such as a "random level" feature that will pick a random level from all your PWADs. This seems like a natural extension of that. Go and suggest it.

It’s totally fine imo, I’d argue it’s akin to someone making personal changes to an existing wad so that it works with a certain mod, or using a source port the map wasn’t designed for, or circumventing intended config/compat things. As long as you don’t go sharing the modified file around to other people, or intentionally misrepresenting the authors works, I don’t see how someone could have a moral argument against it.
