poisonhead Posted May 15, 2023 Where's the load and save etc menus?? It also deleted one wad but no damage there as I backup like crazy and feel like I'm about to have stuff to start mapping after a few images and dehacked tweaking, I'd like to use XWE if anybody knows why this weird bug? Also when I first opened it with the menus visible, it complained about file not found when it had deleted my file but after I loaded (a copy of) my newest resource file (about 40 megabytes) it was okay until I closed and restarted it. Now it was like this always. Then I had a thought, what if I rename the wad but doing that only produced error message and I clicked "quick find" checkbox off so now XWE is like in the second screenshot! Totally empty and f*cked. I made a new "install" (unzipped into a different directory) of XWE but when it started it said: Failed to set data for " but it opened and had menus and stuff. Then I tried to open a wad and got: List index out of bounds (3) What's going on with my XWE? :/ Any help _really_ appreciated! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted May 15, 2023 Perhaps it's the same issue and pressing F11 will work for you too? Otherwise, maybe it's time to update to a new lump manager, meaning SLADE. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
SleepyVelvet Posted May 15, 2023 Don't use XWE because it will randomly reformat your hard-drive if you click on the wrong thing... or even just blink at it the wrong way. Slade is better: https://slade.mancubus.net/ (I think this is its site) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

F11 helped, THANK YOU!!! :) But I'm confused about there seemingly being two different XWE versions or something to do with configurations perhaps or sumtin? 'Cause the older downloaded XWE I've used for a long time works fine and looks like the first image in this post but the one I downloaded to try out when having the trouble I had still gives the error messages that I mentioned earlier and will hang up when I try to load anything but it has so much more menu options when no matter what I select in the options of the older working XWE it only has File/Edit/Entry/View/Image/Help menus. Executables are same size as are version infos. Why the latter has so much more menus and don't work at all? I'll be sure to see more effort to try to get any Slade version working after (and if) I get this project to some point. I kinda like XWE as I know many of it's quirks and also trying to remain within vanilla limits (except regarding a very few little taller textures where it was not feasible to cut them). This thread can die for all I care except I'd like to know why the difference in these XWE's? Also stupid that you can get the program look like nothing by F11. I wonder if other keys might make those menus appear? :D 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'd like to finish this project with it if it don't friggin' take my hard drive? That'd be the death of me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
SleepyVelvet Posted May 15, 2023 I might've been over-exaggerating a bit, but I remember using XWE when I started making maps, and it at very least liked to chew up my Wad files. I don't remember it having a typical Open File -> Edit -> Save File menu workflow and it kinda did its own thing. Then someone mentioned Slade so I switched to that and it seemed to be a much better experience. Just my suggestion. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Do not use XWE and use SLADE instead. 52 minutes ago, poisonhead said: This thread can die for all I care You can request a lock by reporting your first post and requesting a lock there. 51 minutes ago, poisonhead said: Reformat hard drive?????? Gothic Posted May 15, 2023 Quote acts unusably bugged Nah, that's how XWE is. As others have already said: DO NOT USE XWE, EVER Where did you get it anyway? What site still recommends it? 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

There's some outdated tutorials out there that's easy to stumble onto if you're a newbie just searching around. Here's one from the legendary tutorial crafter, Chubzdoomer, from 12 years ago. XWE... I usually open it up and Run as Administrator just to make sure I don't have any problems... Oh Dear Lord.... Though here's one from him 9 years ago of recommending Slade. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wadmodder Shalton Posted May 15, 2023 Unless one want to create a modern fork of XWE, why even bother with ancient and junky piece of software? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
indigotyrian Posted May 15, 2023 (edited) Far be it from me to tell people what software to use but I'm gonna chime in with everyone else and say that SLADE3 is worth switching over to basically immediately. It's a far more modern utility that does everything you're already doing with XWE and has a whole lot more features, including a full-featured map editor. It's under active development (the latest version came out a little over a month ago) and the vast majority of people today use it for Doom modding. prfunky Posted May 16, 2023 As the resident curmudgeon here, I can say that I still use XWE... but I really try hard NOT to! You wanted to know "Where's the load and save etc menus?" ~ I will say that the save menu isn't needed. Why? Because XWE saves immediately on most changes you make. Have you made a mistake? Too bad! It's now part of your permanent record. The exception being editing text entries; when you click on a different lump, it will ask you "save changes?" Besides all the above advice to use SLADE instead, which I do totally concur with, never, never, ever-ever-ever open the same file in Doom Builder (or anything else) that you already have open in XWE. I learned this a long time ago, in a Doom editing universe far away. I'm happy you reported having backups of your work and encourage you to continue with that practice. Good luck! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
