Combat tactics that are best used fighting big hordes of monsters

Recommended Posts

Don’t stay still in open space for too long, try to break them up into smaller groups, prioritize larger threats first, try to get enemies to infight by having them get stuck in crossfire from enemies behind them, use stronger weapons/avoid using weapons that are more likely to get you killed, try to maintain distance if you can use the rocket launcher, try to find power ups like partial invisibility or invulnerability as well as soul/megasphere, ensure you are armored up, don’t retrieve health items until you truly need them so they are conserved, don’t retrieve ammo until you truly need it as well so you don’t waste any that you could retrieve by getting them too early, run to cover or just run away and let the crowd move towards you where they may not all be able to get to you quickly due to the architecture of the map, if you’re saving progress be sure to save anytime a chunk of enemies are defeated/if you’re playing saveless don’t get too cocky and always remember one slip up could mean instant death so imagine the HP is your own life to help get fully immersed into the action.

Even though this video's really only about a single fight on a single map, the discussion of "pushing" and "holding" and how you move to do each is something you will find helpful on most maps with high monster counts.

Unless infighting is a possibility, in which case, just do infighting. My main advice there (other than learning how to move to get monsters to hit each other, which just takes practice) is to think about when you can use infighting to actually kill a monster and when you can use infighting just to stun an enemy while you kill them yourself. A group of imps won't kill a cyberdemon but they can still be useful if they get him to turn around long enough to give you a free BFG shot.

Here is an old post by Nine Inch Heels regarding fundamentals necessary for "slaughter", of which often contains hordes but can also apply in regards to small-to-mid scale encounters based on monster AI manipulation or player movement within confined spaces.

The single biggest (and relatively simple) tactic that you should keep in mind is the horseshoe movement pattern. You can see an extreme example of application here, and the reason why this is important is that when you're working in a confined space relative to the amount of monsters pursuing you, this movement pattern will help more evenly distribute where monsters move, instead of having their AI decide to directly dogpile on you if you tried to stay in one spot, or moved in a shorter pattern.

run around a bit to get them to start infighting. if you can do that in applicable situations then half (or more) of the battle is won.

practice dodging projectiles while they whiz by you very closely, in situations with a lot of monsters your best resource is space to move around. If you're comfortable getting close to projectiles that effectively buys you some more space. A good way to practice this while just playing normally, try to dodge in between a stream of arachnotron bolts. It's tough, there's not much space, but it is doable
