New to this

Hey everyone, just found out about this forum and I'm decently new to PC doom (I've had it on playstation for a while now). How do I go about starting to play mods?

Hi thank you for the answer, the only doom I currently have is the first one on steam, is it required I buy the bundle first or is it workable with just that one until I have money?

There are plenty of custom maps and megawads made for Doom 1 (SIGIL, Base Ganymede, Fava Beans, ect) and most gameplay mods will work just fine with it as well

 

But if and when you decide to go for Doom 2, I'd recommend waiting until you see it go on sale (which is usually less than $2 usd) and until then give Freedoom a try: https://freedoom.github.io/

Yes, that's what I just said, there are plenty of mods for Doom 1

It will only works with Ultimate Doom Custom Wads, and the most used game to play modded stuff it's Doom2.wad and you could wait for a sale.

Its literally pinned to the first page indeed. So OP's question would be answered from the get go if start new thread wasn't clicked upon instead.

Well OP is new to the forums and probably new to the forum format in general, so the concept of pinned posts might just be new to them as well. Nothing wrong with being thorough

No you see, i don't like this. I expect every greenhorn to have a PHD in Dooming and Doomposting or it just isn't worth the trouble. The lord knows his inklings won't last long in activity here, so i expect better from everyone, including you.

Freedoom exists if you can't afford Doom 2, I'm not sure how well it will support mods across the board but it will allow you to access a fair bit more content.

I use a ZDL for my stuff. Its a multi file loader.

 

You need the ZDL itself and a setup in the settings, adding things where they belong

the source port, say zandronum as an example, but there are a few different ones

 

the basic doom iwads

-doom.wad

-doom2.wad

-plutonia.wad

-TNT.wad

 

You place the files in the proper designate spot and you can play basic. Click on the specific Iwad on the main page before pressing launch.

 

After you get a hang of launching basic, you can load in whatever cool extra external file (whatever mod or level) you feel for in addition to the basic on the main page. This allows you to play majority of everything easily. Though you need to learn how to organize your files properly so you can find them and place them into the zdl smoothly without hassle. Thats the hard part because you can just keep collecting new files from this site here.

I'm newly moved out of my parents place and trying to find a job so literally any money is needed for rent etc right now
