HorseJockey Posted May 20, 2023 So I know everyone is tired of the "It runs Doom" nonsense, as it's rather played out. I found this to be an interesting read though, and as far as running Doom on hardware or software that it wasn't originally designed for, this is a pretty esoteric platform to get it running on. Now I'm not saying I would enjoy playing this way, which is my main issue with running the game on TI-85's and the like, but unlike running it on a calculator/toaster/GPS I personally find this way more intriguing. Probably because I really enjoy old tech, especially anything audio/video related. Also the fact that it is actually running on the old tech, not just utilizing a built in LCD screen with android. https://hackaday.com/2023/05/20/its-doom-but-in-teletext/ 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wyrmwood Posted May 20, 2023 God I'd forgotten about Teletext. It was so awful but I can remember some of our neighbours boasting about their Teletext TVs. Impressive feat indeed, like you though I don't really fancy Doom with Atari 2600 level graphic's and a TV remote for a controller. If I remember there was a huge input lag on Teletext too. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
HorseJockey Posted May 20, 2023 Massive latency issues, but it was cool for the time. I used it well after it was obsolete as my family had "hand me down" tv's for as long as I can remember. As far as the technology it reminds me a bit of webtv, gimicky and much like your Teletext neighbor, there was always that friends dad that would go on and on about how awesome their new WebTV was. 1 hour ago, Wyrmwood said: Atari 2600 level graphic's Ha, I was thinking the same thing. It really does look like one of those homebrew 2600 games. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
SealSpace Posted May 23, 2023 I'd say this was a pretty impressive endeavor even for otherwise primitive graphics on an 80's TV or something. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I have a good Opinion about Teletext and i am sad, that they changed it mostly with that overweightend Frontend that loads for Years. It was super easy to get important news quickly. As there is not much Space available, there was also not much filler Stuff, just the important Part of the News. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Midway64 Posted May 31, 2023 "I'm Too Young To Recognize This!" I'm honestly tired on the cheap-off display trick to make people believe it can run Doom, but I'll make an exception for this one. Anyways, great article, it is sort of a niche experiment, the way lukneu rendered the mugshot is kinda silly considering he just made a smiley round face. Most of the architecture of the map can't be seen without bumping up the gamma, but I'll take that as all other display tricks like this one result on (mostly) the same blind view. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
