ZombiemanMastermind Posted May 23, 2023 Like, a source port with different settings to fit console doom more. Lighting, graphics, sounds, that sort of thing. I doubt anyone has, but just curious. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
The BMFG Posted May 23, 2023 theres psydoom, a 1:1 recreation of ps1 doom ported to PC 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted May 23, 2023 For the longest time, there was also Doom 64 EX, which used to be the best way to play Doom 64 on PC. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Biz! Posted May 23, 2023 There's also Phoenix Doom, which is a port of the 3DO version 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted May 24, 2023 There's a few ports that are out there specifically to play a console version of Doom (Calico - Jaguar, Doom64 EX - N64, Phoenix Doom - 3DO, PsyDoom - PlayStation), but there are no ports aimed at playing PC Doom with a console-inspired coat of paint. This is usually left to modders to make, e.g. Consolux: 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

houston Posted July 6, 2023 These are all very interesting, but why? I guess it's just what some people grew up with? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted July 6, 2023 Honestly, a PC port of SNES Doom would be interesting if only because it's not using the Doom engine, so there are very noticeable differences in gameplay. (Same for GBA Doom II but the source code isn't available AFAIK.) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'd say there's an element of technical challenge or novelty to it, but more importantly, these different console versions can offer notably different experiences compared to their PC counterparts. For example, Doom on PS1 brought a completely different soundtrack and soundscape, and its levels are given a fresh coat of paint via a combination of altered levels and colored sectors — and on Ultra Violence difficulty, Doom II enemies in Doom levels. These changes are simply unavailable anywhere in an official capacity (You won't find a "PlayStation Doom" addon in the recent "Unity" Doom port released by Bethesda on various platforms), and community efforts to backport this experience via WADs to modern PC Doom can vary in how authentic they feel. PsyDoom on the other hand is a reverse-engineered port and modernization of the PS1 code back to PC, complete with support for Vulkan rendering and high resolutions. Supply PsyDoom a valid PS1 Doom/Final Doom disc rom, and you get the PS1 Doom experience with all the benefits of PC Doom controls and modern hardware support. ludicrous_peridot Posted July 12, 2023 I may be wrong, but International Doom used to support playing Jaguar Doom, still being a PC Doom source port, rather then a backport from consoles. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Monocled Posted August 17, 2023 You should check out Doom64 CE it is absolutely the best way to play Doom64 combining all of the best things of all the other Doom64 ports or mods Note; You do need the Doom64 iwad from the Nightdive remaster (You might be able to use the original iwad if you somehow have that) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted August 17, 2023 4 hours ago, Monocled said: (You might be able to use the original iwad if you somehow have that) There's no such thing, the original Doom 64 did not use the IWAD format for its data. Doom64 EX came with a tool called WadGen that would create an IWAD from the N64 ROM. However, it did not merely transcribe data, it also converted the native Doom 64 sound/music/graphics formats into standard ones. And the IWAD created by WadGen is itself different from and incompatible with the IWAD from the remaster. So you can't use the IWAD from Doom64 EX's WadGen to run Doom64 CE. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

And god forsake the ones who mess up the shotgun in mods, because its a FREAKING LEVER-ACTION GOD DAMN IT. LOOK AT THIS: Does that look like a pump shotgun to most people?! WRONG! There's no pump, the trigger section is bigger, and there's a cocking trigger right beside the barrel. (I don't mean to get angry at people, it's just that this simple misconception is killing me.) AmethystViper Posted September 17, 2023 This might be a would be redundant considering with have Doom 3: BFG Edition and the Unity port, but I would be curious if someone made a source port based on DOOM: Classic Complete on the PlayStation 3, complete with the controller vibration features, automatic patching of Map 31 of TNT's Pharaoh level, and online multiplayer capabilities. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

IIRC that's basically just running the original engine under an id Tech 5 shell. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
taufan99 Posted September 17, 2023 Also, I seem to have forgotten to mention these updates to D64 EX, which are EX+ and Super EX+ (basically EX+ with several new monsters, restored "reloading" sprites for shotgun, SSG, and plasma rifle, and a Complex Doom-based enemy/pickup item randomizer system). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
zombiedoom Posted September 18, 2023 (edited) I would love to see a source port that backports the SNES as well as the Sega Saturn version of DOOM to PC in the future, and by that, I don't mean the far future or the long term future, but in the foreseeable one Edited September 19, 2023 by zombiedoom 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
