Part 8 of the RAMP 2023 playthrough is up!

* Noot's One Building With an Ugly Gun by @Nootsy-Nootsy
* Generic Maze map02 by Walki Acid (not on this forum by this name)

Since my Comas playthrough and commenting on a few maps, I've since finished 60 maps in this amazing set total. And these were mostly the shorter maps, so no playthroughs nor commentaries. Well, short few:

  1. Even most of the small maps are a delight to play through, classical DOOM experience.
  2. For the true newcomers: do playtest your map at least once or twice in GZDoom yourself. A lot of tiny mistakes that are obvious if you just check it once, like doors not working or 89 secrets which are all torches flagged by accident (funny to some extend but a bit silly.

I don't think I'm done with most 1 sized maps and I'll play a few more.

It's @azerty. The wiki can be a good resource for aliases. Though of course not going by a bunch of different aliases would be so much more practical...

That moment you realize your GZDoom settings were wrong and have been playing 80 maps on HMP *uncanny.gif*. Ah well, not that it greatly matters much but I am restarting on UV.

How did that happen? I was about to start my run.

Tl;dr, I... honestly don't know. I play most wads with DSDA, but obviously that doesn't work well. I have it set on base DOOM settings and I thought I started a new game UV; been saving directly after every completed map. But there's one map where certain pickups only exist on Hard, and they weren't there. Command skill, answer: 2.

Damn. Thanks. I'll be sure to check it every now and then.

The ordeal* has ended: the wiki now has initial pages for all maps. Phew.

*Yes it was, even with extensive scripting: Dynamo cropped all maps, I polished them and moved badly separated areas together for better scaling, then generated map views taking the wiki image limit into account. Creation of map pages with all initial info then took 7-8 script passes, followed by manual verification & tuning, scripted addition of mapper categories (mostly last month in advance), manual tuning of navigation boxes for insanely long titles, and manual/scripted addition of maps to their pertaining author pages, and probably more I'm forgetting. I'm beat!

And I've made a contribution right away (doubt anyone's surprised): https://doomwiki.org/wiki/MAP34:_Four_Comas_(Rabbit's_All-comers_Mapping_Project_2023)

EDIT: oh of course I can view it but it still needs to be approved.

Huh, almost 300 maps and 900 Mbytes file size, and that's after PK3 compression. Doesn't it break some record? I know there were joke WADs that just slapped together many random maps and/or contained huge non-Doom lumps (video files and such), but what's the biggest legitimate WAD?

Anyway, I tried to run v1234b in GZdoom 4.10.0, but there were about 100 script warnings during startup. Is that normal?

Of the ones covered on the wiki, RAMP 2023, 2021 and 2022 (in that order) are the biggest by map count, followed by DUMP3.

There are other large projects, like 10 Line Genocide with 230 maps, but I don't follow the forums in general so there may be other, larger ones.

There's Bloodline at over 500 MB but like 90% of the file size is music.

Whomever proofread and improved this, good job, it's cleaner than what I originally wrote (which mostly came from my earlier post anyway). Whenever I 'guide write' my thought process goes faster than what I actually write up, and once it has a certain structure it's hard to see your own faults.

Secret descriptions are done after two weeks. Small thanks to @TheV1perK1ller for videos on some of the maps to help me understand them better, at least until I ended up having to do the rest on my own.

Since you found the secrets, can I ask you something about the lone secret in my map 173?

Spoiler

Is using the rocket launcher to shoot an offscreen Keen intuitive, or was that too obscure? I have no idea how hard that was to figure out.

An old version (I think it was v3?) of Æons of Death was so large that it prompted ZDoom to switch to unsigned numbers in its archive management code...

Well when you title a map "Hard to Find" I am gonna assume that something is hard to find and yes that secret was a hard one to figure out. But by looking in an editor and seeing where the keen was and how to use it to unlock the 666 wall it makes sense. It's kinda like when you have a shootable switch that is slightly above your level but there's no other way to shoot it other than using the SSG spread that goes slightly vertical.

I just wanted to know if the quacking cyberdemon has been released somewhere as a standalone enemy. Funniest thing I've seen in years.

I go this problem where after beating a map (doesn't happen with all of them) I get teleported back to the start of the hub instead of finding myself in front of the map portal I entered and I also don't get the blue icon on the portal indicating that I beat the map, either. Anyone have a clue how to fix that?

Do you have some sort of alias/console command to restart levels using the “map” command or something similar? This resets your game

I do indeed! So that's the problem. Goes to show I don't use GZDoom very often. Thank you very much!

It took me a month, but I've played all the maps in version v1234b. I was able to finish vast majority of them normally, although I ended a few prematurely because of tedious gimmicks or custom stuff. But I also run into some game-breaking bugs. I know these probably won't be ever fixed, but here they are anyway:

MAP01: the most buggy map of the pack, there are several softlocks (mostly because of lifts) and HOMs.

MAP67: red door can't be re-opened from the outside.

MAP89: script that ends the map after you kill the cyberdemon is apparenly poorly designed. It worked only 1 time out of my 3 tries. Fortunately, the map is short.

MAP208: I went for SSG right after start, but I couldn't reach it and then I was stuck in the room, the exit sector was blocked by HOM.

MAP296: GZdoom crashes if you go outside to the northern area. It seems it's caused by crossing linedef 4696 or 4871, they're overlaying and I can't tell which one.

And RAMP2023 doesn't run at all on GZdoom 4.11 beta due to Decorate errors. So it won't be playable for very long, unfortunately...

Edit: BTW, those stories about DavidN's life you can unlock in the hub - are they true?
