advice for editing graphics for an amateur

MugMonster

Question

I've never actually made a Doom map, but I've dabbled with simplistic mods like replacing music and graphics.  a while back, I decided to export the Doom 64 pinkies, shrink them by 1.5x, and import them into classic Doom just because I always liked how they look... in Slade, it gives me an option to auto-convert to the Doom palette, but the auto-converter's selection made them very desaturated; rather than choosing colors closer to a classic Doom pinky, it went more beige, Hell Knightish.  today, I have decided to revisit this idea, but I want better colors (and to turn the eyes yellow instead of red, and maybe make the blood more vibrant).

so, as someone with access to an old version of Photoshop (CS2) and very little knowledge of pixel art, I am wondering, is there an easy way to convert a Doom 64 sprite into the color palette of a specific Doom monster, rather than whatever Slade chooses from the entire Doom palette?  like, a way to restrict photoshop's palette to those very specific colors, and then force photoshop to use that palette on another graphic?  I'm really hoping there's some way to make this happen without having to just edit it pixel by pixel, because I am probably just not going to do it if that's the case.  I'm also planning to do this with the 64 versions of Imps and Pain Elementals, so this advice will be useful more than once.

Slade has a built-in Color Remap tool. When you right-click, it should say 'Color Remap', and there you can select colors or ranges to recolor the sprite as you wish.
