Marathon's legacy for sale, cheap

Recommended Posts

I am so excited for this I could about shit myself. I can't tell if this is a remake or sequel (or, knowing Bungie and how Infinity ended, both) but I am just losing my mind with glee. This is the best news I've heard all month.

editing the title to better reflect the deflated hype. (and it's still a Marathon 1 reference!)

I'm clenching with rage. How DARE you raise my hopes!

Nah, I kid, but Bungie is not exactly id software in any case, and they don't really revisit franchises upon finishing main storylines.

New rule: if you ever resurrect an old series, don't make it an online title.

FIRST make a fun singleplayer experience or two and then you use an idea that at best works for a spin-off or side mode.

D2016 was expected to flop because of the marketing focus on a divisive multiplayer and then the hype inscrease when people got to learn about the singleplayer.

QC seems to be fine with some fans, sometimes because of the "Doom is SP, Quake is MP" meme but there's even things people liked out of that game. though it's also clear that people want a Quake 5 SP revival and QC had better days.

I can see some guy say that Marathon doesn't have to be SP anymore because of how Infinity ended and in case a new game ruins the abstract presentation of the originals.

But another reason why this sucks is because multiplayer in videogames can be easily exploited due to things like MTX: never forget that dark age in 2017 and EA going "singleplayer is dead".

Online games are usually in life support so they need a "hook" whereas a singleplayer game just needs to be good enough.

And Marathon itself was also a more dormant series with less games that is mostly known to hardcode retro FPS and Bungie fans. so you have both the issue of pissing off established fans and alienating new ones.

At least the old games are free and there's Marathon mods.

Bungie has had a Halo-sized hole in their IP lineup for over a decade and they were tone-deaf enough to think rebooting Marathon into a multiplayer-only game was a good idea. This fact alone makes me want to strangle someone to death. Did anyone, ANYONE in charge even look at the source material? It's actually pathetic how increasingly out of touch AAA publishers and studios have become, it's like fucking Hollywood.

It’ll be DOA. This is Marathon in name only and the trailer looks terrible.

To be fair, bungie isnt the same as old bungie ever, most og team of bungie either left or got fired, so its not surprising to see dissapointed game.

Yes because as we all know, resurrecting a single-player IP to turn it into a multiplayer game always works out well, with the sole exception of literally every time it's been tried.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the art direction here? I feel it's a bit too all-over-the-place in terms of color.

At least the music sounds pretty good.

I agree, the art doesn’t resemble Marathon at all. Also, the music isn’t made for the game, it’s this. So it’s likely just used for the trailer.

Who wanted a Marathon extraction shooter?

If you like Marathon, you probably would want a modern take on the original formula that made the games work. If you don't know what Marathon is, you won't buy the game.

Wait, why revive Marathon all of a sudden? Is Bungie not satisfied with Destiny anymore?

To cash in on people who barely remember Marathon but may have some nostalgia over it one way or another into buying an in-name only reboot with the hopes the flashy colors brain wash them into buying the product and ignoring the fine print. At least, that’s my guess anyways. Seems everyone that was initially hyped changed tunes once they looked past the title and saw what the game is actually going to be.

I mean, the aesthetic is cool and I like the trailer and the ARG they're doing with this but it's just Tarkov in space, why should I care?

This 100% screams "decision made by execs".

Though to be fair, if you really, honestly, expected anything better from AAA gaming in 2023, you deserve all the disappointment.

Sometimes I think disappointment is the only thing I apparently deserve, but yeah you're not wrong.

I was kind of excited when I saw the headline, I thought maybe there was going to be a new Marathon game. I've never finished either of them, but they were always really interesting as the Macs answer to Doom. I was really excited when I was finally able to play them on Windows, and they have their problems, but they still seemed like amazingly interesting games. I would've loved to have seen what Bungie could've done with them on modern hardware.

And then I saw that it was an on-line game. And let's get this straight, Halo multiplayer was fun, but it always felt lacking compared to games like Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, it didn't have the breadth and customizability of those games. Halo was famous for it's single player, the fact that it had really decent multiplayer was a side effect of having a good single player campaign. They need a single player campaign to go along with it, because turning a traditionally single player game is going to piss off everyone who has ever played it. And maybe they're hoping their audience doesn't know what Marathon is, because it's not the most popular game in history, but the people that do remember it will be pissed. And the people who don't, will think "Great, another Destiny, I'll pass". Oh well, something of value was lost, but it's not going to change the world.

Anyway, this was my hype train when I opened this thread until I read @june gloomthird post, because I think it brings some levity to the situation:

As a very small silver lining, it has got people interested in the original.

Been having notifications come flying in on my phone due to a video of gameplay I uploaded years ago.
