Deep Breath - blowing away demons at the bottom of the sea! (Dev thread)

Recommended Posts

I really enjoyed this mapset, the traps were exciting without being too challenging, which is perfect for a mapset this size! I also love the water sections, easily the best part of any map and quite novel.

However, I really enjoy combat puzzles that are not so forgiving. We get a lot of space for most traps you spring on us once you slow down or give it a couple tries for a run. And I feel like that hurts replayability for me.

The Cyberdemon encounter in Map 6's blue key area and Map 2's Caco/Cyber combo are really stand-out moments for me. They are close to the perfect difficulty level for me regarding individual encounters.

But that's just my two cents, and I genuinely felt that this was a breath of fresh air! Please keep pumping stuff like this out.

UPDATE:

  • Difficulties implemented. Play continuous if things are still too rough for ya so you can keep all your guns.
  • Some textures polished. The seawall at the start of map02 didn't have its black fade finished properly. It now does. Hopefully I caught all the rock walls and stuff.
  • Difficulty mainly moves weapons around, gives armour at the start of certain maps, scuba gear at the start of map03, and switches a few monsters, but not many.

This concludes the general upkeep of this mapset now; I will provide updates on this thread for any things that get identified by players, but Deep Breath feels about ready to submit to idgames. It's been a fun, wild ride, y'all, and I would like to give a HUGE thank you to all who have tested and been there along to way to provide advice and offer a kind kick in the pants when it was most needed. This could have easily died halfway through map03 (watch my playthrough of map03 this week for details behind that) so I'm glad I managed to push this bulging blue baby into the world for people to enjoy.

I'm going to take a short break from mapping (pssh, yeah right, I can't help myself) and focus on videos for my channel for a smidge, but I have ideas for four more mapsets rolling around my head that haunt me at night and draw my attention throughout the day. I hope to have a mapset out by spring (autumn / fall in the northern hemisphere) ... I'm collating and editing textures and deciding on a new palette at the moment in between other things, so things may accelerate (or not) depending on how inspired I am.

Thanks again (especially to Biodegradable, my antipodean ami for all of his testing and advice). Cheers, bruv. :^)

As far as I'm concerned, I had great fun in playing and providing feedback.

The competition for this year's Cacowards is very stiff, but I feel like next year will be a great opportunity for you to snag your first one if you will bless us with more great map sets. On a related note, I found out about another award called the Doom Awards. You can find more information here:

Thank you again for the experience!

Just finished a playthrough on UV. It was a fantastic experience. Really loved the underwater parts, being time limited for those sections adds a nice amount of pressure that feels like a nice change of pace from the rest of the wad. This underwater industry felt like a real place and I really loved the textures and all the nice underwater details. Congratulations on a killer mapset.

Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed. :p I love making (hopefully) real places but for my next outing I might get a bit more nightmarish and abstract.

Blast to play! Exciting and challenging with some of the underwater setups. The aesthetic of the maps fit perfect the motif. I personally like close quarter fights and this delivered. Thanks again for quality maps!

You should disable jumping... there are a lot of places that seem to indicate jumping is required, but clearly you're not supposed to have that ability.

Thank you, Steve. I have now stated that jumping is not allowed in the original post next to the comp level.

good times nice to be back - man your maps are fun. I do think tho due to the confined area of this final fight it was the hardest fight in the set for me. Tried it a few times still dont know the best approach haha.

Will air more in the coming days was an absolute blast man

Hey buddy here map 5 each map delivers man . That open spider fight is really good use of usually bad used monster - falling into a crevice at start was very scary and all made a good environment. Good times buddy!

Last one tomorrow

And here's the finale to an absolutely fantastic set. I have to admit I'm still riding high at how fortunate my gameplay ended up at the end haha.

This is an absolutely thrilling fantastic cohesive set of maps and I can't wait to see what you do next as you keep improving. Good stuff I hope more people check it out bud

This time I'll try not to post the wrong video
