DOOM remake in "true" 3D (three dimensional DOOM)

Recommended Posts

I recall playing a few years back a remake for DOOM which is solely or primarily a remodelling of the "sprites" from 2D to 3D, thus making DOOM truly 3D or truly three dimensional (I write both ways for the search engine bots).

  • This is not necessarily a WAD file.
  • I do recall weapon appearance and perhaps also mechanics was/were slightly different.
  • Other than than it was pretty much the same DOOM

I think that it may be this.

Does anyone have any precise name or download link or any further information?

Man, this is not a remake, this is GZDoom.

Looking up inside the ZIP reveals you various files related to GZDoom (like the .pk3 files).

And yeah, I think that's the one you're looking for.

The reason it got pulled out was for various infringements related to copyright blah blah blah

Spoiler

(...Also Doom always has been 3D, it just used various performance techniques so 386 machines did not chug up with the engine.)

Its either that or Brutal Doom

I don't recall ever running GZDOOM without some WAD, interesting to know that it's possible :)

GZDoom can run custom games as an IWAD or an IPK3.

If you didn't know this, you would be surprised how many standalone games exist that use GZDoom.

Redneckerz thanks for this reference. I have known Brutal Fate before and I believe I have also tried Blasphemer about two years ago but some other projects mentioned I didn't know before and I find cool are:

  • Supplice
  • Mike's Toybox
  • Hacx
  • Zauberer
  • Osiris
  • Zauberer

I should try these.

Doom Remake 4 isn’t a remake.  It was just some dude stealing a bunch of other people’s wads and mashing them together.  It’s still Doom running in GZDoom.

Looks like the version you linked includes Freedoom, but I’m pretty sure the original also came bundled with a stolen copy of Doom 2.  In other words, it’s just as much “true 3D” as anything else running in GZDoom using Doom 2 as the iwad, no more and no less.

  • 2 weeks later...

ValveMercenary or anyone else who can help.

Please forgive me for anything absurd I might write here. I have no significant knowledge in computer graphics.

I just tried to run GZDOOM verson 4.10.0 64-bit on Windows 11 by dragging all the following pk3 files into gzdoom.exe.

  • gzdoom.pk3
  • lights.pk3
  • brightmaps.pk3
  • game_support.pk3 (not a very clear filename, would you agree?)
  • game_widescreen_gfx.pk3 (I don't know what it means)

I have picked The Ultimate Doom (DOOM) WAD and I have also picked OpenGL ES.

I got the following error:

Quote

File C:/GZDOOM/gzdoom.pk3 is overriding core lump engine/commonbinds.txt.

This error also appear for the Unity version of Doom.

How could I play Doom in full 3D as in the picture in the original post?

You're not supposed to drag those files to gzdoom.exe, they're autoloaded (at least gzdoom.pk3 is, I think there are options to enable/disable the others).

Anyway, if 3D models of the weapons and enemies are what you want, GZDoom itself does not do that. It provides support for doing so, but the models themselves would have to be provided by a mod. What you linked at the start of the thread is a bunch of mods bundled together, there's a text file in the link (the pastebin link) documenting the sources.

Widescreen graphics for in-game.

This sounds like that voxel mod that got posted not too many months ago

Not exactly, the Voxel mod is handcrafted, does fit nicely with the original art-style and does well portraying the original sprites.

The models from this "remake" don't exactly fit with vanilla assets, and they look cheapo on some sort.

Are you referring to the Doomsday Engine?

I know I shouldn’t say anything when I have nothing good to say, but my god that looks goofy.

The only 3d remake of DOOM I want is one that puts it in a 3d space like DOOM Eternal but with the same level layouts, monster designs and new weapon animations. This just looks like DOOM Quake. I love the original DOOM artstyle so this could never get me to like it.

That's a typical reaction to Doomsday.

In Windows 11 with Google Chrome 114.0 I couldn't download a released version from here:

https://dengine.net/windows

Merely clicking the left mouse button on any of the four stable release download links, didn't cause any download to start, but, oddly enough, clicking the right mouse button on them and then clicking on "Save this link as", worked.

I don't find a way to contact the author to let him know about this strange situation.

In GitHub, I didn't find a link to an issue queue (although it's not a problem in the mod itself).

Anyone who knows the author can send him a private message.

Thanks for all the help !

I have downloaded DOOMSDAY but I don't quite get it. It looks to me more like a launcher rather than a mod.

The Ultimate DOOM I ran there is quite similar the regular DOOM although I think that shotgunnar sprites are indeed 3D, but not like in the DOOMSDAY pictures above.

Doomsday itself is an engine, not a mod.

For the models you have to download them, if I remember correctly, they're available to download in the main menu.
