How long does it take to reach full speed in Doom

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how long it takes to go from 0 to max speed in Doom in a straight line? I've been searching the forums and have not seen anyone answer or ask this question.

Just measured it: 3.2857 seconds (115 game tics).

Pressing walk, you reach a momentum of 8.333 units.

Running, you reach a momentum of 16.666 units.

Same amount of time whether walking or running.

I've read in other posts online(such as this one, and this) that classic DoomGuy is capable of straight-line speed a little above 55 miles per hour, or close to 90 kilometers an hour.

This means that DoomGuy has similar acceleration to high end supercars. Seriously.

Don't forget about "turbo" :)

I'm presuming that the Anons who made the measurements in those posts weren't using the "turbo" command.

Very helpful! Thanks.

But wait, what if straight line corresponds to flat geometry, so you can SR50?

@MamboWitch, I think this is a really interesting question! The details on a horizontal line are great, I guess there are other mechanics that may increase this, maybe things like rocket or enemy boosts and SR50 as mentioned. Not sure if this affects just the max speed or time to max speed.

Raises the question for me as to what if the line in the OP was vertical. What are the fall mechanics? A quick browse did not yield much info bit I found this:

https://zdoom.org/wiki/Falling_damage

Seems like there is no limit (terminal) speed. Is this right, i.e., that the doomguy max speed is dependent on map height? Is there a limit on this height?

Anyway, found the thoughts in this thread interesting.

I only measured going purely north (pressing one movement key).

Pretty sure you can get higher speeds by going diagonal (pressing forward and strafe-right), but it is likely it takes the same amount of time (I can't be bothered to check).

You cannot accelerate when in mid-air, though you lose no momentum either, so falling off things should not make any difference to how fast you can go (horizontally).
