smallchildirl Posted June 5, 2023 I have no idea if this makes any sense, but are the Nazis in Wolfenstein equivalent to the Demons in Doom? The Nazis and Demons can both get annoying to deal with and can be very memorable. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Goody Posted June 5, 2023 No way. A lot of the demons in Doom are cool as hell (haha). I still would love a plush Cacodemon or Pain Elemental. I would cosplay a Mancubus. I respect the Arch-Vile for such a formidable foe. The Cyberdemon is iconic. Can’t say the same for a fucking Nazi. 9 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted June 5, 2023 I am not sure I understand the question. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Trustanus Posted June 5, 2023 (edited) The only comparison I can think of is the guard dogs and pink demons. They seem to be used in similar ways in both Wolf 3D and Doom as they're both often found in large numbers and can swarm the player. Other than that Wolfenstein 3D is meant to depict guards on patrols, defending their posts, etc. and since they're meant to depict guards, SS, officers, etc. under the Third Reich it makes sense there would be little variety in their weaponry and would have AI that allows them to be a bit more unpredictable. Doom, that isn't really the case. There's far more variety given the setting and how there are former humans which are basically zombies that know how to use guns, and then all the demons, they don't have to patrol or defend anything and they don't think like humans do. If you want to get philosophical, then it's difficult to argue with the idea that absolute pieces of human trash like Josef Mengele or Adolf Hitler were so utterly evil they were basically demons in human skin. In a more generic game enemies sense then yes they are the thing you shoot in each game. I would consider the demons on Doom more varied and interesting though than the Wolfenstein Nazis which were mostly just hit scanner variants. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Captain red pants Posted June 6, 2023 (edited) I don't think so. Even on a flat plain with trash mob tear monsters, blasting through Dooms demons feels different then blasting through Wolfensteins nazis. Edited June 6, 2023 by Captain red pants 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
mrthejoshmon Posted June 6, 2023 Do you mean that they're both equally iconic perhaps? I'd argue no, you show a Pinky or Cacodemon and most would understand exactly what it is/where it is from. Show them the SS guard or Officer and remarkably less will know. Do you mean in terms of how they function? No, not really. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted June 6, 2023 Wolfenstein enemies can have two different functions per frame, and they run at 70 frames per second, while Doom enemies can only have one, and run at 35 frames per second. Therefore, Wolfenstein enemies are canonically four times smarter than Doom enemies. They're still brainlessly stupid, though. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yeah, all you gotta do in Wolf3D is have the Nazis get in front of a closed door, let them open it, and gun them down one by one. Edited June 6, 2023 by Master O 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Solmyr Posted June 6, 2023 Kinda, the nazis, wanted to depopulate Eastern Europe and replace their former inhabitants with german settlers then do the same worldwide to everyone else they consider inferior. The demons from Doom want to depopulate the entire planet and replace their former inhabitants with their own kind by zombification or mass teleportation. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
HavoX Posted June 6, 2023 (edited) I don't think so. I do have a theory that the demons were influenced by the Nazis, though, as evidenced in Wolfenstein RPG. Edited June 6, 2023 by HavoX 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
JustAthel Posted June 6, 2023 Hm, a bunch of essentially human soldiers with rifles vs hordes of hell that have a multitude of hitscan, melee, and projectile attacks... Gotta say, they're definitely not the same, and I can definitely distinctly remember the entire Doom demon roster more than the Wolfenstein roster. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai Posted June 6, 2023 (edited) I mean philosophicaly I would say that Nazis could be considered worse than demons because unlike humans demons, as a pure manifestation of evil, have no free will they simply act as their nature dictates. Humans on the other hand can overide their nature to some degree and have greater degree of free will then demons do, so the fact that many of them choose to commit evil, when they could be perfectly capable to do good, does make humans paradoxicaly more evil then demons (in a way). Realy what made Nazis so brutal wasn´t that they decided to kill of an and/or enslave entire ethnic groups (jews, roma, slavs etc.), history is already full of similiar atrocities that are sadly a result of human nature that makes us fear anything that is different from us, but the way they carried the Holocaust which was incredibly horrifying (use of advanced technologies that allowed to better organize and carry executions and enslavement and transport people to their final grim fates). So I would say that the Nazis were far worse then an abstract force like demons. Edited June 6, 2023 by MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
kinker31 Posted June 6, 2023 I'd wager that the demons are worse, but to explain why would get into personal headcanon territory, and would play fast and loose with 2016 and Eternal canon, best-case scenario. That, and I'm already on thin ice with this forum already, the warning on my profile and all. You can send a private message to me if you really wanna know more, not that I think anyone would be interested in the frivolous headcanon of a sad basement-dwelling nerd. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
