I didn't want VR when it was under a thousand dollars, I'm certainly not going to throw away $3500 on an Apple product that was probably designed with planned obsolescence in mind. Because they seem to be really good at that.

The demos are a classic case of something which looks kind of cool the first time you see it, but in practical reality will lose novelty value very quickly and you will be back doing the older, more efficient method before too long. Same reason why the Metaverse keeled over and died. Even if it had actually been good, the number of people with the tech to use it just wasn't there, and the amount of effort expended for the result gained simply wasn't worth it even if they did. The same will happen here. There will be a bunch of rich users that get one and rave about it, but on the whole it won't get anywhere near the market penetration needed to justify companies spending the time needed to develop things for it.

$3500 for something that has 2 hours battery life. On a new platform where there are no existing apps for it at all except for what Apple themselves scrambled together. For a product that nobody has mentioned an actual useful use case for. A rich mans toy. Will probably entertain you for about a day or two, if that much.

Classic Apple. Unlike other companies they may find more dumb sheep to buy into it but ultimately it's still VR/AR. So far every single attempt to make it go mainstream failed, and the reasons for that have not changed.

 

The high price will also be a massive barrier for entry outside the hopeless crowd which has to own everything Apple makes.

At best this will be an efficient cash grab to part rich and stupid people from their money.

It seems to cost the 2000 Moneys.

But you can do similiar stuff with your existing Hardware, be it my Valve Headset, as you can have the Virtual Desktop etc.

The goggles won't be available until Q1 2024, and because it uses an M2 the barrier to port existing apps to the system are rather low. I think there will be plenty of apps within the first year of it's release. But the question of the actual use case remains. Using it just as an oversized Desktop certainly won't be enough, considering the contra points and the high price.

Even though what's shown was impressive, i doubt it will be enough. But we will see, if it is the new iPhone or the new HomePods.

My question is what's the point of it, it seems like it just runs ios apps in a floating "screen" that you have to hold your arms up to use which just seems like more work than a normal device.

Exactly. It's a gimic. It looks neat and is kind of impressive but in terms of practicality i seriously doubt it's very efficient.

Okay, honestly, the device does some very cool things that no other device does.
But it's still pretty much a sort of artistic ready-made rather than something useful.

Well, I don't hate Apple (I even own an iPad 3), but would you rather buy:

 

-  A monster of a PC or laptop, that has good battery life, that can do serious work, and can last several hours.

 

OR

 

- A headset which lasts 2 hours, looks creepy as hell, and is absolutely overpriced and impractical for home users and even for business use.

 

Now sometimes people are proven wrong, (for example, take the example of the galaxy note) but I honestly think that not many people will buy the Vision Pro. They will either spend their money on a macbook or wait for the second generation of the Vision Pro.

At $3500, Apple knows what market they are targeting. They are targeting the market of people who can spend $3500 today without blinking to play with Apple's first generation VR device.

 

Getting hung up on the price is useless; either you can afford it or you can't. It's understandable if you can't because its an absurd amount of money for most people to drop on something which will likely just be viewed as a prototype in the long run.

 

All that is separate from whether or not AR/VR has some large role in the future of computing and/or whether or not Apple will successfully be a part of that future.

 

I'm not sure myself about the answer to either of those questions, but a lot of threads about new technology, especially new Apple technology, read like threads from 2001 dismissing the iPod. I've noticed in my decades reading online content that many of the enthusiasts deepest into the world of technology and computing seem to often have the most inflexible outlooks on the future. Betting against the internet's initial opinions on something new seems to often pay off, in a contrarian way.

We saw a similar situation with the smartphone; a luxury item for rich pricks for a good few years before it became affordable for the average punter. Now the device is entirely ubiquitous as we're all rather dependent on it. Whether this particular device can or will see a similar case where it replaces the smartphone in terms of everyday use remains to be seen. The current version may be all bulky and silly-looking, but the possibility of the technology eventually being able to fit in what could otherwise pass for an ordinary pair of glasses at a consumer level price seems very possible to me.

 

Mind you, the idea of having to wear your smartphone on your face and waving your arms about to check your messages doesn't really appeal to me, personally. ;^P
