Did Chex actually have the licence to distribute all those unmodified Doom levels in Chex Quest?

Recommended Posts

It's well known that they licenced out the Doom engine for Chex Quest, but the game contains a lot of Ultimate Doom levels that are unused, so much so that they make up the majority of the game. Surely they would have only had the licence to use the engine right? I doubt id would have been happy back then if they found out they were distributing what is essentially a retail Doom IWAD. Why would they have done that anyway instead of basing their IWAD on the shareware IWAD, or you know, actually taking the type to make sure they're not distributing Doom game data?

What I want to know is, is it all still there in the version distributed by Limited Run Games?

Those levels are utterly unplayable as the unreplaced monsters all have blank graphics iirc and the textures are pure chaos. Nothing like a glitchy Tower of Babel with an invisible cyberdemon to ruin your day.
