Doohnibor Posted June 18, 2023 Hi, I would like to suggest a category, dedicated to Classic Style WADs Why? I am an oldschool DOOM player - enjoying almost exclusively WADs that look and feel like the originals and the well known classis Megawads. The amount of WADs that made it into the Cacowards - fitting my taste got thinner and thinner each year until it reached zero. I probably wouldn't write this if I hadn't heard the exact same thing from many friends.... who lost all interest over the years because they don't enjoy the feel of the newer releases. I think a "classic style" category might be of interest for a lot of members of this community... and maybe bring back a few. though I guess defining what is considered "classic" and what isn't might be a huge challenge in itself. : ) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
baja blast rd. Posted June 18, 2023 While closer to the release of Doom, "WADs that look and feel like the originals and the well known classis Megawads" might have represented a high % of releases, naturally as time passes and the scene develops, people radiate into many different approaches. These days the styles people map in are very diverse -- there are really like 10+ genres of releases (at least). So with 10+ genres of releases, if you only really love one of those approaches, naturally you're probably going to like 0-1 per 10 wads that get featured. So that "shrinking fit" is expected behavior and unavoidable. The Cacowards is more for omnivores (and specialists who want to push past their own favored niche), rather than people who like a very defined thing and only want to play that. Especially in modern times, you have to read past just the Gold awards. A 2022 HM is on par with some of the '00s top 10s anyway, maybe even literally if it represents a "percentile" of releases. If I were a specialist, I'd just go through and get the wads in my specialty from the whole entire feature and consider that my 'awards' from that year. You'd run into 2022: A Doom Odyssey very quickly, which is a sequel to a "well known classic megawad." Later you'd notice Stickney Installation, a mapset that hews pretty close in style to the originals. (Also I'm very omnivorous, so can't imagine being a narrow enough specialist that I wouldn't play Ozonia or Solar Struggle if I wanted something with a very classic feel -- but maybe those too, despite their obvious infusions of more modern DNA.) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
