How do you deal with DOOM's bestiary?

Recommended Posts

For me it's:

Zombiemen: Chaingun

Shotgunner: Chaingun or Shotgun

Chaingunner: SSG

Imp: Shotgun

Pinkies and Spectres: SSG

Cacodemon: Chaingun

Hell Knights: SSG, finish off with chaingun if needed

Revenant: SSG

Mancubus: SSG or Rockets

Aracnotron: SSG, Preferably Rockets though

Lost Soul: SSG or Chaingun

Pain Elemental: Plasma Gun the fucker idc!

Baron of Hell: Rockets

Archvile: Rockets! Plasma is too slow!

Cyberdemon: BFG or Plasma

Spider Momma: One BFG shot directly up the ass!

SS Nazi: Plasma idc

Romero's Head: If I had the Daikatana, I'd use it...

DOOM is absolutely too fast-paced a game (with too slow a weapon change animation) to think in these terms IMO.

I generally have (single) shotty out for general purpose, switch to SSG if there's something particularly meaty. Chaingun if there are turret enemies and/or long range threats that the rocket launcher can't really deal with; speaking of which, if I have the spare ammo the RL is a good allpurpose tool for just reacting to things -- as long as I'm not in a confined space (which would be, back to the shotty). Chaingun and plasma are crowd control, the former only really for fodder and the latter for more substantial targets. BFG almost exclusively used to make sure the archvile of any given monster crowd is the first motherfucker to perish.

And even so, I'm not strict with the above as a set of rules. You gotta be fluid. Sometimes the occasion calls for caveman brain logic, and pumping every rocket you have into a cloud of lost souls, sometimes that really is as stupid an idea as it sounds. This rollercoaster got twists 'n' turns.

As soon as I hit max ammo for something, I start using it. It can be fun to blow a bunch of rockets and cells on fodder enemies; you're almost certainly going to start replenishing them again soon anyway. I don't need 100 rockets sitting unused in my backpack.

EDIT: Oh, and I always chainsaw pinkies and spectres if possible. So damn satisfying to saw through dozens of them without taking a single point of damage.

Like others have said, I don't think in terms of enemy-weapon pairings and don't feel that is effective.

But there is some value in knowing the counterintuitive pairings and edge cases.

Pain elemental: Use way, way, way more RL than feels natural for beginners. RL is an amazing weapon against them when you skill up and can avoid face-rockets. (Hell, even if you're face rocketing every now and then, it's still easily worth it.) A key move is a combo of RL (when the PEs are healthy or grouped) into quickly switching to some other weapon to finish the job.

Lost souls: Chaingun is the best all-around weapon. RL and BFG are surprisingly efficient. Avoid PR unless a bunch are in your face because lost souls are the best enemy at not being hit by PR shots.

Lost souls are weird and defy a lot of intuition. They have 100 HP but suck at infighting attrition and lining/grouping up for multi-kills, so they behave and interact with other enemies and your attacks like a low-tier enemy that has 130+ HP would, sometimes even 150+. Yes despite having 2/3rds the HP, they are sometimes effectively tankier than pinkies. (This also explains a lot of why people feel like lost souls have too much HP. 100 HP is understating how tanky they seem to be in-game.) So that's why using a rocket on a single one, or using a BFG shot to take out a cluster of several, can be surprisingly efficient.

When you're playing mapsets with custom assets, it can help to look for to spot any hard counters if they exist. Ancient Aliens's stealth aliens are really made for "spray and pray" use of the CG and PR. (But I would not go further than that and try to categorize every new weapon and enemy by "what weapon is good for what monster" because that doesn't work.)

damn, I was about to comment RL against PE but rd sniped me.

Obviously still BFG is the most effective, but you'll run into those without BFG. You shouldn't rule out RL against anything really.

^Well, that's the thing for RL against PE, but in the meantime, you can improve your reading for monsters so you know when you can dodge/hold your fire. CG/PG vs PE has a problem of that if the environment is wide open, you have a chance to knock the PE into farther places and it can create a mess. However, 2~3 rockets won't knock it all the way.

Rockets against pain elementals is satisfying for me since I fire one extra rocket beyond what's necessary to kill it, so when it dies and spawns the three lost souls there's an extra rocket right there ready to blow em up instantly.

It's generally not a good idea to think so rigidly that you need to use a specific weapon against a specific monster, but I do like using the super shotgun against pinkies and lost souls specifically because it's a one-hit kill, and rockets against revenants for the same reason.

Shooting rockets at a Pain Elemental and it's spawn is super satisfying, if somewhat ill-advised in most cases.

Aside from that, I like to finish off foes that are already softened up with the Chaingun every now and then. Especially Hellknights that I already hit with two full-on SSG shots. Saves a decent amount of ammo for your heavy hitters when you need it.

Well, I don't use the RL in case a Lost Soul charges into my face and I die by face rocket.

Usually the issue is a combination of standing too still while firing and taking action too late. Obviously it can be risky sometimes but the worse mistake is usually killing them too slowly. Unless you can safely focus fire on them or stunlock them things will get out of hand quickly. The chaingun and SSG at range can often just tread water against a PE or two and you'll suffer an "ammo death" without the proper DPS of the rockets. Damaging yourself with the RL is going to happen at times and chip damage from lost souls will also usually happen, even to good players.

Also, not enough people talking about explosive barrels and keens.

I usually just save the BFG for Cyberdemons or Arch-Viles, unless there's a big crowd that I can't just blow up with a rocket, or I lose patience with a bullet sponge
