A Question about Plutonia 3

Recommended Posts

Would it be ok if I tried to make a Plutonia 3 myself? I heard there was already a Plutonia 3, called Going to the surface, which I heard was not really good, and then there was a Russian Sequel, so would it be a good idea for me to make one my self?

Oh ok cool, I mean can you even copyright doom wads? Since technically Doom is already copyrighted?

You can title your WAD pretty much whatever, but naming it directly after something that popular and iconic is pretty presumptuous. Let your WAD be its own thing and not have it compared to one of the most influential sets ever.

You could always allude to Plutonia somehow so people know it's meant to be a bit of a tribute. Call it like Plutonic Relations or Pluto is a Planet something like that.

Speaking of iconic, see our very own @Doomkid and his take on the subject, pretty entertaining vid:

Good point, while I'd never call Plutonia 3 trash, or even say it's bad, I just heard it wasn't really good, all respect and credit due to whoever did actually make Plutonia 3

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Unless you're doing a jokewad, I don't know why you'd set yourself up to be clowned on. Every Final Doom "sequel" wad that has been well received or anticipated is either a jokewad or a team project -- which is the serious ones, like Plutonia 2, the actual Plutonia 3 (were you aware of this one?), and TNT 2 and its offshoot projects (which are cursed but for different reasons). It seems like there'd be something very presumptuous about a single author trying to make a serious Final Doom sequel all on their own.

A better move is to incorporate the name some other way

Thanks for letting me know of TNT 2, that shit looks fantastic, also I did know of that one Plutonia 3, but I mistaked them for the same one that was "Going to the Surface" but now I know, and that one looks fire, thank you

The takeaway was not that Plutonia 3 was fire. That one is well known to be trash even though the mapper seems to have gotten better; however releasing that set with that title didn't do him any favors as his first release. Plutonia 4 being an April Fool's joke was largely done to clown on how bad Plutonia 3 was. As Doomkid says in the video, if it didn't have that title he wouldn't be so annoyed at the poor quality of the maps.

Plutonia 2, on the other hand, is probably the best known and best regarded Plutonia based map. It's not visually great (neither was the original) but the gameplay and difficulty really matched the original's style. It plays very well even though it's a bit older now, and about a third of the maps are tough as nails. Definitely recommend checking that one out. I don't really know about TNT based stuff.

I think naming your wad as a Plutonia sequel is actually aiming too low, instead mappers should name their wads Doom 3, Doom 4, Doom 5, etc.

Maybe plutonia 3 shouldn't be the name.
If you still want to keep plutonia, then how about this (ideas);

Plutonia III: Exodus
The Plutonia Project
Ultimate Plutonia

plutonia doesn't work very well if not followed by a number or subtitle, which few subtitles work with plutonia.

There's nothing against aside numerous wads being named this already, but you ought to make a name for yourself with a project name of your own.

Don't jump on a bandwagon just because there is one.

If you're going to take the name of something that already has a rich history and a big name on its own, that's going to be a big area of responsibility, especially if it's going to be a number part. People subconsciously, when they see "Plutonia 3," they're going to raise the bar of expectation. And at the very least, they will want to see quality as good as projects like Plutonia 1&2 and Plutonia Revisited Community Project 1&2. I don't recommend doing this unless you're really sure you can handle the task, which, admittedly, will be extremely difficult for a single mapper. And if you're new to mapping, it's better to forget about this idea, otherwise you run the risk of earning yourself a bad reputation. In general, probably having a subtitle but not a number in the title would be a slightly better idea, but you still still have to show a certain level of quality appropriate to the title you chose.

This is a mistake SilverMiner already made when he decided to do Plutonia 3: Going to Surface as one of his first works, and as a result this work became attached to him as a stigma at some point. But in his defense, I will say that today, having had the experience, he makes quite good and interesting maps, at least judging from what he showed me, so do not take him as a bad mapper. @Lucius Wooding

Cool slaughter/whatever map idea: Doomguy works at some delivery place and each monster wave pops up from loading docks opening up overtime.

Okay Doom 3 was my original working title for my current megawad lol. It was never intended as the actual title though.

PluTNTonia could be a fun idea and/or incoherent monstrosity

TNT already is an incoherent monstrosity.

There are ways of keeping the Plutonia naming vibe without using Plutonia, see wads such as Urania and Cydonia, or tag something or the end such as Plutonium Winds.

I would personally prefer this to simply tagging a number to the end of Plutonia given there is a serious sequel to Plutonia/Plutonia 2, as well as the non serious wads.

ngl I would totally play that. It sounds like you're gonna get a whole lot of Plutonia from a mapper with a decent sense of humour.

imo, like others had already echoed, making a megawad that doesn't live up to its namesake isn't a good investment.

make your own silly name.
