Change intermission text in vanilla doom

Recommended Posts

How do I change the doom 2 intermission text for vanilla doom? I don't have Whacked4 because there isn't a mac version. Is there another way to change it?

I heard of programming it in slade. But I have no idea how.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

What do you mean by intermission text? The story screen text or the level name on the intermission? The level name is just a graphic (though if you want it to change on the automap as well you'll need to use DeHackEd)

Sorry. I meant the story screen text

I've copied and pasted the dehacked file from another wad and changed the text in slade if you don't know dehacked.

Caution is required to do this safely. DeHackEd specifies string lengths which need to be modified if you change the length of the intermission text from the original.

Ah my bad didn't know that.

From experience, editing old-style DeHackEd strings by hand is extremely error-prone -- I would advise against trying it at all.

That said, if you're on a platform that doesn't have WHackEd available, either check out DECOHack (which is amazingly powerful but takes a bit of setup), or grab good ol' DeHackEd v3.0 and run it through DOSBox.

[QUICK EDIT] You may actually want DeHackEd v3.1 instead -- one version or the other is weirdly picky about which doom2.exe's it'll accept, though I forget which is which. If one borks up, try the other. :P

The good news though is copying and pasting the "Text" blocks between DeHackEd patches is pretty safe, so long as you use some sort of tool to generate the existing definition. Back before DECOHack was a thing I'd usually boot up dhe.exe to edit one or two strings, save it as a new patch, and just paste it over to my existing patch rather than try and fiddle with load it into the tool. Lazy brain-hax. :P
