Which doom games do I need to buy?

Recommended Posts

As in which games to get the full experience of modding, mostly for custom levels and episodes (where I assume I can't have stuff like smooth doom without breaking everything), also I am interested in GZDoom but I do not know if I should get it or what exactly it does. And yes, I never played the classic dooms, did watch a lot and play Eternal. Also I assume for every WAD I need to play on Ultra Violence, right? Thanks in advance!!!

Doom II alone will cover the vast majority of new maps. Doom does get new maps too but much less frequently. Final Doom similarly has very few that require it specifically.

Smooth Doom should work with most maps excepting the rare few that alter the base weapons.

How do I know if a map slters the base weapons in any way?

It will usually say so in the accompanying information - be it the web page, forum post, or text file. And it's not like your computer is going to explode into pieces if you load Smooth Doom with something and it doesn't work. So just relax and give it a go.

Oh more just asking because I will luckily get myself some fancy hud mod, call me crazy but some of those huds with all that fancy info I will never need look real fun to use.

If you want the FULL extent, then technically you will need Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom as some people make episodes that will only be playable on Doom 1, some levels also require resources from Final Doom's TNT or Plutonia (but you can still play them in Doom 2 just with missing textures).

When in doubt, refer to the map's read me file to see what game you need (it often tells you). If you stick to just the game you own then there will be literally 0 issues, it is very straight forward.

If you buy the Steam Version of DOOM II, you could download the 2 Final Doom iwads (Plutonia and TNT) and grab all 3 .wads to use with you launchers and sourceports.

No, indeed mostly newers .wads are really more difficult that vainilla Ultra Violence because how many mappers adapt their doom combat skills.

So you can play in HNTR or Hurt me plenty, most mappers adapt the maps to so it's not only a number changes.

Oh are the Plutonia and TNT iwads free to download? Also I will still probably play on UV, I'll get the hang of it.

Missed this comment initially. The answer to this question is hell no. It's a game. Have fun. Pick a skill. If it's too easy, try again with a higher skill. Too hard, go down. Simple.

TNT and Plutonia are both free

TNT and Plutonia are free to download if you have the Steam/GOG version of either Doom or Doom II. Not sure if they're available legally by any other means.

Doom II will cover the 90% of the maps, nota only of they base game, but also Final Doom (Due the merge of Doom 2, Final and te Master Levels, at least in the steam version). On the Unity Port, Final Doom is free on both Doom 1 and 2 versions as a add-on.

But I suggest to buy both Doom 1 and 2 if you want the full experience. You can buy Doom 64 if you want ti play some wads made for it (few, but cool, and is a good remaster btw)

For the sake of completeness, buy Ultimate Doom, Doom II (which comes with Final Doom and the Master Levels), and Doom 64. Those are pretty much all the games that have solid modding at the moment (if you care about truly owning your games, buy them on GOG). I guess Doom 3 has somewhat of a modding scene, but not nearly as much as the stuff from the 90s.

GZDoom seems to be a common port for newbies, but I would highly recommend trying out Crispy Doom instead, especially for your initial playthroughs. It's a faithful but modern way of playing the game without the complicated bloat that GZDoom offers.

Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom.

There's some options to buy these games on PC, so I'm making a little list right here:

>GOG.com - via a nicely setup DOSBox or Doom Classic (BFG/Unity)

>Steam -via a barely setup DOSBox or Doom Classic (BFG/Unity)

>Microsoft/Xbox - via Doom Classic (Unity)

GOG.com version features the original Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom games nicely packaged.

Steam version is the one most people are accustomed to.

Microsoft version is for the Xbox dudes.

You own Doom Eternal? If so you already own Ultimate Doom and Doom 2, they are in the game files and you can extract them to use on your source port of choice. But I would recommend you to play Doom 64, Doom 3 and DOOM too.

Ty for all the help, I'm sorry for no responses I was not allowed to post for some reason.

New members got a bit of a message limit until they post a handful of messages. It's an anti-spambot mitigation.

Once you're out of New Member (10 posts, IIRC? Can't remember), that restriction will go away.

You could use the ZDL launcher for mods, wads and sourceports. its very convenient and easy to use

Here’s a breakdown of a bunch of wad launcher for your mod managing needs!

Though truthfully I just drag and drop 99% of the time.

Thanks! Also do you know any good minimalist huds? Or a way to enable one in GZDoom?

In GZDoom, press the +- Button once( There's probably a better name for it, but I really don't know it :P) and you'll have a minimised version of the hud. Hopefully that's what you're looking for.

There is also an alternative hud in gzdoom with some more information (which looks great) image.png.cef641d356128fa0b0a427bfb7d61909.png

Didn't work for me when I tried, but I am using a hud addon so maybe because of that. Or I had to press +-

I must say though, Beautiful Doom is great, it adds a lot of gore which I love but it doesn't rework the game like Brutal Doom. It's perfect!

I mostly play on hurt me plenty, there is no need to take the highest difficulty to prove yourself to some gatekeepers.

I would suggest to just buy all of the bunch, but to get started Doom 2 is ok, as most wads are made for it because it has more monsters.
