How did you get here?

Recommended Posts

I was introduced into this community after seeing a Doom Eternal trailer, I really wanted to play the game but my PC was shit, so I decided to download and play Brutal Doom since it was probably the closest thing I could think of. After that I was seduced by Doom Builder, seeing how easy it was to make maps for Doom, and I found some other cool mods, learned how to make my GZDoom not look like shit, started playing megawads and...

Abracadabra!

I am here!

To think that Brutal Doom, was the thing that brought me into this community is not exactly a original origin story, although I don't like the mod anymore, it's still pretty popular around the internet. But I still want to know about what brought YOU into this gigantic pit we call home.

Was it a mod? A megawad? Is your PC so bad that retro games is the only thing you can possibly play without it having a cardiac breakdown?

Tell me!

As an old fart who discovered DW around 2000-2001, it was just the fact that it was the prominent website back then (Along with NewDoom). I played Shareware Doom, liked it and wanted to see if there was something of a community out there.

Never registered, but rediscovered Doom in 2008-2009 or so. Lurked for years on DW, until in 2019 i decided i should do my part after finding out there was a whole Wiki dedicated to Doom.

So in the recordbooks its 4 years, but off the table its 20+ years.

Brutal Doom brought me here as well, specifically the TotalBiscuit's video about it. I don't play BD/PB anymore but I am thankful for leading me here.

Watching videos about Doom Gameplay mods, then I installed GZDoom. Ironically, I've barely touched either in a good while now.

I was a user on the ZDoom Forums for three and a half years, though I knew of DoomWorld from roughly the same time; and then, well...

Let's just say "moderator drama" and leave it at that. After those events over at ZDF, I decided to make an account here.

PlayStation Doom: GEC Master Edition.

I just had to sign up and take some map slots. It wasn't an option. The fact you could map for the PSX version of Doom was simply way too wild to pass up.

Granted, I've been part of Doom on and off for well before then. My ZDoom account dates from 2014, and I'd been fooling around with Doom mapping well before then - earliest evidence I got of that is 2008 or so? (It should be noted I didn't have a computer of my own until 2002 - grew up pretty poor.)

Until I was about 18 I had been on and off this site since I was about 9ish years old. Only had internet when I'd go to my grandma's house and I would lurk on here, as well as Realm667 (I thought the custom enemies and stuff were SO cool at the time, and I still do) while also watching Doom vids on Newgrounds and YouTube. I'd also play Doom Shareware on Silver Games, and played this like 2D side scrolling doom game thing. Can't fully remember what it was called, I think it was actually just called Doom 2D or something. Would always lurk until 2018 when I decided to make an account here and then started posting not too long afterward. Around that time was when I had gotten my first real PC and started playing with sourceports and downloading mods and wads and the like.

For years I had only watched videos and seen pictures of the vast vast amounts of content that Doom has, and once I got my computer it was now at my fingertips, ready to be played.

Aaaaand now I'm here, who still lurks lol and has finally started making my first set of maps. I've never had real good PCs or anything, but a lot of Doom sourceports are very flexible with performance, so I'm usually able to enjoy most forms of content. (Also Chocolate Doom, cause I still love vanilla Doom while also being able to bind keys and being able to always run)

I want to definitely start posting and having conversations with the community more on here. I'm really introverted even online so I am still a lurker at heart (just cause you lurk doesn't necessarily mean you're an introvert) and I don't post often, but I'm gonna change that.

I got back into Doom recently. I played a lot of it back in the 90s when it first released, and was feeling nostalgic. Discovering modern source ports and all the wads and mods people have made has been the most fun I've had with gaming in years. Found this forum during a Google search for some random query I had, and it seems like a good place for actual conversation (as opposed to Reddit-style shouting into the void).

Usually I would just work on UV Max runs in crispy and didn't really play a lot anymore. I recently got into playing some mods in GZ and it inspired me to begin building some really spectacular maps, and to get involved in the community, and fire explosive laser projectiles at children.

A friend insisted on trying out Brutal Doom co-up, along with a horrifying mishmash of some other modpacks. Grabbing download links and stuff involved using this site, and I liked what I saw.

I played Doom and Doom 2 in high school when they were new and fell in love instantly. I remember playing the Beavis and Butt-Head and Simpsons mods back when they were new, also, but I didn't know about DW or the greater Doom community until about 2006. Lurked here for several years, then went through several years of crazy life and quit playing video games. I missed video games and came back. Things have been stable for the last decade, so I got back into playing Doom 2 on my PC for a break from all the buggy, micro-transaction riddled mess modern games have become. I decided a few months back to try mapping and fell in love with that, too. After 15 years of lurking, I finally decided to create an account so I could share my efforts, get feedback, and work toward developing my skills at this new hobby. I have to say, I'm glad I did.

In 2020 I started playing doom. I had heard of it and seen some gameplay but had never played it before

I started watching videos by chubzdoomer and davidxnewton

And soon I got doom builder 2 and started making maps

At first I didn't know how to texture or doors

But I soon got the hang of it

In 2021 I was making short doom levels that looked nice but had 7 second gameplay

In 2022 I got doom II and have been making doom ii maps ever since with no turning back since making doom 1 maps is useless when doom ii exists.

At the the end of 2022 I drifted away, still watching doom videos every now and then

In 2023 I watched power park's video on myhouse (amazing map btw) and decided to get back into doom mapping

I decided to finally join doomworld and here we are

I'm pretty sure it was through GameSpy at one point. I think in middle school, I was going onto Planet Duke a lot. I don't recall what I was on there for (I was, like 11 years old), but it was probably for any info on Duke Nukem Forever. I think I found a Doom related site while doing so, and searched for some Doom mods. Idk if I found Doomworld before finding Super Sonic Doom, the first custom WAD I recall playing, but I did eventually end up on here sometime in the mid 00s, looking up the Cacowards and 10 Years of Doom features for WADs to play. I don't recall making this account as back then this site had a front page that wasn't part of the forum and I never really ventured into it. I just paid attention to the New Stuff Chronicles. I checked in on the site every so often, especially around Cacowards time. Outside of that feature, if a WAD had a glowing review in the New Stuff, I'd check it out. Eventually the front page and New Stuff stopped, and I started lurking in the forums proper. In 2021, I rediscovered my account and started to become active on the forums, initially cause I wanted to make a map for the Doom Maximum Project that year. That didn't happen as I overwhelmed myself making a map. I did however start commenting more on new releases and the Megawad club. And that's the jist of it!

As far as I can remember I found doomworld with google. I rediscovered DooM about 4 or 5 years ago with DooM 2016 for my Nintendo Switch and restartet playing classic DooM with all his new famous and glorius source ports. I still haven't played DooM Eternal until now and I am still not feeling that I have missed something yet.

My first exposition to Doom was with Doom 3 in 2006-07.

For a 6yr old kid, it was mindblowing, graphics were almost like real life and that hand in the floor was like "wtf is so realistic", before that I only played Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and PSX games, so you can imagine my shock seeing the power of Id Tech 4. Also download Doom 95 soon later, but not much.

I got into the zdoom forums though rediscovering Doom with Brutal Doom, but didn't made an acc until 2017. Do some things (Like a very stupid and bad DOOT gameplay mod) and abandoned that forum, I got into Doomworld in the same time as Zdoom but didn't used this until the release of my first map and talk about SIGIL (by that time it was announced), after that, abandoned this forums too and wasn't until recently (2022) that decide to return, now that my English skills greatly improved (now I barely use Google translate to write correctly :P)

I doesn't surprise me tbh... Seeing what happen on Hall of Unpleasantness made me quit the forums... Idk seeing the attitude of some mods even against non agressive members was like... Ugh

I've been lurking this site in one form or another since about 2005. I grew up playing Doom and 90s PWADs, and around 05 I got a copy of Doom: Collectors Edition, as it had Final Doom which I'd never played, and had been curious about for ages. That compilation came packaged with Doom95, and I went looking for a better way to play. That lead me to something called ZDoom, which lead me to Doomworld when I got curious about whether people were still making levels.

I had a previous account that was barely used, I think the only thing I did was tell Kristus how awesome Curse of D'sparil was lol.

It's funny how I can't remember why or when I first looked at Doomworld (tho it probably involved looking up wads on the wiki and following links to the release threads when it wasn't on idgames) but I know why I finally made an account and started posting.

Namely, trying to figure out how to use Eternity Engine, which I've ironically since stopped using because whatever advanced features it has really don't make up for its lack of qol features that other source ports have.

I was trying to see if MtPain27 (yes, I was one of those people at one time) had a Doomworld account, saw some posts he did in the February 2021 Doomworld Megawad Club thread, and after a week and a half, decided to jump in the next month. And here we are! Much nicer than when I first really looked into it in 2007, as it happens, from the then-official Wolfendoom page.
