A medium-sized prison map I made for RAMP 2023 :) Download here:

Replaces MAP01.

 

Tested in GZDoom, not designed for jump and crouch. Freelook allowed!

 

Playing in co-op provides early access to weapons.

This maximum security prison, once an Earthly structure, was pulled into Hell and turned into a horrid bulwark. Now you, our brave Marine, find yourself incarcerated in the most tightly secured section of the complex...

 

Sounds echo from behind your cell door. A screech. A scream. An explosion. You put your ear to the metal door to listen closer, but recoil at the sharp pain of intense heat, as the door's lock begins to melt.

 

From the sound of it, the Imps are staging a riot, and managed to blow open the crusher system that separates your section from the rest of the prison - seems they would rather gnaw on your innards than have a shot at their own freedom.

 

You hastily remove one of the loose floor panels and retrieve your trusty pistol, which the guard foolishly forgot to take off your person when he dragged you in here - typical zombieman - and prepare to make your great escape...

I was a dummy and played it using DSDA-Doom and couldn't open the big yellow door, but had a lot of fun up to that point. I really loved the mechanisms going haywire in the beginning, and the droves of enemies that came right after. Great stuff. I found it pretty well balanced and the encounters were exciting. I also loved the architecture, the height variance and all the details such as a bent door, surveillance screens, broken bars/tiles, and so on. I also couldn't help but chuckle when I saw the

Nazi inmate using his disgraceful flag to cover the tunnel he was digging with a spoon.

 

I'm leaving for work now (in a prison, oh, the irony), but I'll give it another shot when I'm back home (with GZDoom this time, I promise!) and give you a more complete feedback!

A very entertaining map :)

I died twice, twice because I blowed myself with the rocket launcher. Maybe I should no more touch this devil weapon

Yeah, after a few more tries, I managed to complete the map without saving, and I can confidently say I love it very much. I love the aesthetics, the level design, but most of all I love the combat design and enemy positioning. Every encounter is exciting, and the deluge of surprises after getting the red key can be devastating if the player didn't remember to check every blue and yellow door before going for the red key. I felt very dumb killing them all with the SG before checking the doors, but I can't deny that was thrilling as well.

 

I managed to kill the cyberdemon just as I ate his rocket and died, which was simultaneously hilarious and frustrating, but in my next attempt I didn't do anything after the wall raised (or lowered? I don't remember) and just let things solve themselves without my interference, which leads me to what may be my only criticism: There might be a "Block sound" linedef around there that isn't letting the monsters in the final area hear your shots depending on where you are, which may make it easy to cheese the encounter.

 

I did record a video of my successful playthrough but I'm a bit ashamed to upload it because I couldn't find the last secret and IDDT'd my way to it, only to find it worked just like something I did in my own RAMP 2023 entry. Oh well...

Played on UV -- lots of fun!  Balance of weapons, combat, health, and ammo was good (although I  think offering the SS a bit earlier might be appropriate).  Thanks for making this.
