BUYXRAYS Posted July 10, 2023 (edited) I would be interested to hear peoples opinion on this. What episode from doom do you enjoy the most? Knee-Deep in the Dead, The Shores of Hell, (my old favorite) Inferno, or Thy Flesh Consumed. (My new favorite) Edited August 16, 2023 by BUYXRAYS 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

SMG_Man Posted July 10, 2023 Episode 2. My runner-up is Episode 1; although it has fairly tight level designs, the extremely limited bestiary and repetitive aesthetics hold it back just enough for me to prefer Episode 2 as a whole. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Herr Dethnout Posted July 10, 2023 Knee-Deep in the Dead. I literally know everything about it, and never gets boring. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Tiramisu Posted July 10, 2023 I used to like episode 1 the most, but now the maps feel a bit samey to me, with only a few stand-outs (Computer Station and Central Processing are my favorites). Conversely, lately I've come to appreciate episode 3 a lot more, which used to be my least favorite! Of course it has Hell Keep, by far my least favorite DOOM 1 map, but aside from that there's just a lot of bangers there like Pandemonium or House of Pain. I actually like Unholy Cathedral and Limbo too, which is probably the make-it-or-break-it point for most people regarding episode 3. Episode 2 and 4 are mixed bags in my opinion, but 4's highs are very high so it's probably tied with episode 3 for my favorite. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Somniac Posted July 10, 2023 I know E1 will always be the most iconic, but I've always slightly preferred E2. Containment Area is my favourite map in the entire game, and despite the relative flatness of the maps the episode overall really hits the mark. I also love seeing PWADs that do the E2 theme, big shout out to Nihility: Infinite Teeth for taking the abstraction and spookiness of this style to what feels like its logical extreme, upping the challenge and verticality significantly in the process. Next favourite is probably E4. There's something about that sky texture that feels cosy, but unsettling. I love how Hell Beneath goes straight for the jugular, with the downbeat music and aggressive combat and almost zero regard for the player's enjoyment. Perfect Hatred ups the ante even further, though personally I've always been the most fond of Sever the Wicked and Against Thee Wickedly....and there's a slew of killer PWADs that do great work with this style. Slith, Draft Excluder, and Crusades come to mind. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Deleted User bye Posted July 10, 2023 All are absolutely amazing! Although I honestly prefer the first one, just so fun and easy to blast through everything. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
espilka Posted July 11, 2023 Out of the five UD episodes, it'd still have to be E2. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Eurisko Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) Knee Deep In The Dead. Holds the most nostalgia for me, takes me back to those PS1 days in the 90’s every time. Edited July 11, 2023 by Eurisko 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
St. Mildly Annoyed Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) For me it's inferno. It has my favorite depiction of hell out of any of the doom games, with its fleshy, gore-filled level design mixed with the bright, crimson red sky giving a distinct feeling that you're in a place worse than a lake of fire. The intermission screen exemplifies this feeling by showing how hell can be divided into regions, with a burning pit just being one of many. The design of hell also makes the gameplay more fun for me, as it gives a sense that you've become a demigod for even surviving the entry into hell, and now you're smoking greater demons left and right. The whole experience feels both epic and impactful, from beginning to end. Edited July 11, 2023 by St. Mildly Annoyed 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Sesamia Posted July 11, 2023 Episode 2, with Episodes 1 & 4 pretty close behind since I really like Ultimate Doom as a whole. Episode 3 is just okay. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Geqoph Posted July 12, 2023 (edited) Wow, didn't expect Episode 2 to appear in this topic at all. I thought I was special... Anyways, definitely Episode 2. For some reason I can actually imagine people working in their everyday jobs in these, let's face it, primitive maps. Also the concept of a dimension slowly taking over another one chunk by chunk seems really cool to me, and really reminds me of the first Half-Life which I love. nicolas monti Posted July 13, 2023 Knee deep in the dead Shores of hell as the second one. I've had a unique experience with E2. I first got the SNES version which lacks Containment Area, Command Center and Spawining Vats. Some time after that I played the PC version doom1 in my brother's in law home and discovered Containment Area but I didn't have enough time to explore the remaining maps. So I was craving those three maps like a year until I purchased my full copy, no internet at that time, it was the 90s. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Geniraul Posted July 13, 2023 Despite episode 1 having some really precious maps like E1M3, E1M4, E1M6 and E1M10, and episode 4 IMO having even more of such like E4M2, E4M9, E4M3, E4M4 and E4M8, I would say The Shores of Hell. Containment Area and Deimos Lab are absolute masterpieces and are filled with a unique atmosphere that is healthy to inhale ;) Command Center and Spawning Vats add to the ambiance, too. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
rzh Posted July 13, 2023 The Shores of Hell. It has the best textures and atmosphere out of all the episodes. Second place goes to Knee-Deep, I don't like replaying it because of the easy difficulty and the MIDIs sound grating to me now, but I still like the textures. Inferno is underrated. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
