Best total conversions?

Recommended Posts

Hi, i'm looking to find some total conversion mods to play, but google keeps bringing up brutal doom instead of stuff like blade of agony or batman doom. What total conversion mods should i play?

Alien TC, it can be really creepy at times, and is one of the first, if not the first total conversion

Solid choices above; I'll also mention the "platformer TCs" we have with Jazz Jackrabbit Doom and Hocus Pocus Doom.

I'd also suggest taking a look at those lists of standalone games built on Doom ports.

I consider it more of a standalone game rather than a doom mod :)

Batman Doom is being brought up often with some reverence - I am yet to try it myself though :)

Also Xim's work on Star Wars (you can even play The Darkest Hour or Doomed Space Wars with it).

Especially if you've actually seen the movie or delved into the lore.

Facehuggers are one of the few things that actually seriously have given me the creeps even with god mode active, let's put it this way ...

So, Aliens work like this. (Do I get in trouble for spoiling nearly 40 year old movies? LOL I guess I'd better spoiler tag the following just in case)

Spoiler

In the beginning there's an egg. Looks kinda like a big football, or a baked potato (I actually jokingly called baked potatoes "alien eggs" for a long time at home after first watching the first couple movies about 20-25 years back).

Egg opens and this pale, about hand sized spider-crab thing with a big long tail comes out. Its sole objective is to jump on something living (it seems like almost any species except the aliens themselves will do, provided the size is compatible. Humans are targeted often, a dog fell victim in Alien 3, and during the events leading up to first contact in the first movie, there's evidence of a much larger humanoid species also falling victim. One of the 21st century Alien verse movies goes into more detail about that part I think but I haven't watched it yet. On the other hand, cats appear to be too small for the thing to work with), grab its face (hence the name "facehugger"), wrap its tail around its neck, and drop a second stage embryo down its throat.

After a while, the facehugger falls off the victim (after which it dies, as seen in the first movie) and the victim seems to recover for a short while ... until that second stage embryo grows up enough and then pops explosively out of the host's chest (hence the term "chestburster"). It then rapidly grows up into the adult, H.R. Giger monster, super lethal predator alien. Some aliens are queens, they lay the eggs noted previously. It doesn't take long for them to obliterate an entire human colony.

In most Alien video games, getting facehugged instantly ends your run, for obvious reasons if you read the spoiler explanation.

In Aliens TC, it's somewhat less dire (the facehuggers occupy the lost soul monster slot, using the same attack mechanics - although the fact that they stay in close after first attacking means they attack a lot more often than lost souls, and 3-24 damage is actually a lot with how little health the Aliens TC maps have), but if you know the spoiler explanation, there's still going to be that visceral panic even if you've got god mode on ...

These two are gameplay mods, not total conversions.

the latter two are good mods, but not total conversions. total conversions are stuff like brutal wolfenstein. new textures, new enemies, new campaign, new weapons, etc.

REKKR

the enemies have a very creative design. the textures remind me of super mario 64's textures. the music is great. 8 lost souls out of 10. would be more if the level design gave the player a bit more "hey go check out this area!" there's nothing i hate more than endless wandering trying to find a stupid switch.

4 super shotguns out of 10. the level design was labyrinth-like, some people might like it, but not me. i wander and wander for 20 minutes trying to find something to end the level, and not even a single enemy i come across. doom total conversion? more like maze simulator 1997. and that's just the first level. i couldn't bare to play anymore than one level. although i do admit the title screen music is a bop. i do like the custom artwork, though. there's also this annoying beeping thing in my top-left corner.

Ashes 2063

9 motorbikes out of 10. amazing. it's like if fallout 1 or 2 were first person. i love the mad-max like direction, too. got a bit stuck on the second level, but i finished the second level. also, crowbar!
