itaisinger Posted July 13, 2023 hi. im new to doom, installed bc i heared of myhouse.wad and had to give it a try. every time i die in doom 2, both in GZ and in the official steam version, im just stuck in place, and the only way to keep playing is to load a save. is this normal? did games no respawn you themselves back then? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
smeghammer Posted July 13, 2023 That is normal. On loading (GZ)Doom, you are offered a menu of new, options, load, save or quit. So yes, the only way to continue where you left of is to make sure you save regularly, and load the saved game. You can do more funky things with autoloading a saved game, via a CLI parameter. See the zdoom wiki for details: https://zdoom.org/wiki/Command_line_parameters#Loading_options Just found this too: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=59889#:~:text=Autoautosave is a universal autosaver, weapon mod%2C and any map. which might give you what you need. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted July 13, 2023 Yup! Doom was the first FPS that offered Save Anytime You Want mechanics for single player. But it did not do autosaves on DOS whereas GZDoom is default Autosave at the beginning of a new level. What that means is if you are playing on DOS or PrBoom( as examples) then you will start with a pistol only if you died without saving at the beginning of a level. There was a perk to this because Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom levels were all designed to be beaten from a pistol start. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted July 13, 2023 The game restarts you at the beginning of the level with just a pistol and 50 bullets when you press the use key. GZDoom makes it so it'll load your last save if you have one, and it autosaves at the beginning of each level. There's a mod for it that adds autosaving for various other events too. 6 hours ago, kalensar said: Doom was the first FPS that offered Save Anytime You Want mechanics for single player. It used the old Mario style lives system but it did save at the beginnings of levels too. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

See the zdoom wiki for details: No... just press the use key. As you do in any source port of Doom. And the vanilla game. People don't know this because GZDoom by default assigns use to E instead of space, and people usually press space as an "any" key, expecting any key to work to respawn the player, but no, only the use key works. It would be very silly if GZDoom didn't allow you to respawn. TL;DR for @itaisinger press 'E' to respawn Edited July 14, 2023 by Individualised 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I’m fairly certain Wolfenstein 3D allowed saving anywhere (but also had the lives system). 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
