DoctorNuriel Posted July 23, 2023 (edited) Which "open" map (whether from IWADs or a custom WAD) is your favorite and why? What makes a good sandbox map in your opinion? Personally I'm a big fan of Suburbs' hectic minislaughter combat, and Odyssey of Noises really refined what Downtown set out to do in terms of exploration and large-scale landmarks. renegadeandroid Posted July 23, 2023 After Doom's first map is about the only one I've come across in my resurgence with Doom titles, but it was fun and difficult. I am definitely interested in more maps like this, and appreciate your suggestions. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Faceman2000 Posted July 24, 2023 E2M7 from Deathless really stuck out to me when I played through that wad. It and E2M2 were probably my favorite levels in the set. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Matt Mello Posted July 24, 2023 Odyssey of Noises, Mount Pain (not a city map but it's kinda sandboxy/large), Suburbs, and Citadel from the IWAD's From the PWAD's, I'm just gonna go ahead and say every map from Lost Civilization. Lost Civilization has not only the best city and town maps but also the best countryside maps too. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
philcul Posted July 24, 2023 Almost all of Lost Civilization! But especially map03 The Farmlands, map12 Suburb, map13 City Centre and map20 Ending. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
LadyMistDragon Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) Industrial Zone City of the Unavenged (Memento Mori) Doom District and City Bounds from Hellbound. Actually, there are multiple great city maps in that megawad. Sandbox is probably being able to get keys in any order, which probably means the map has at least some open-ness to it. Along those lines, that would describe most of @Sphagne's output @DoomRevolver (don't mothers make good fathers?) also makes lots of sandbox maps, although they're UDMF format. xX_Lol6_Xx Posted July 25, 2023 Auger;Zenith's Map 06, I absolutely love it's atmosphere and vibe, shoudout to it's mall and beach map, they're also really good. As for Vanilla Doom, I don't really like the city levels but maybe the one I enjoy the most (it's still not that much) is Industrial Zone. There's also this 1996 HeXen map I came across while exploring the downloads tab, really cool and creative for it's time and plays well with all classes. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

erzboesewicht Posted July 28, 2023 Seconding Lost Civilization, while not all are really "city" maps most are open and sandbox'ey. Regarding real city maps I like MAP05 (according to the map title a "village", but larger than most IWAD city maps) and MAP12 most, and of course MAP20, although it's a mix of city, techbase, fort and whatever. :) Also one of my favourites is Eternal Doom's MAP26 ("No Parking"), with lots of cute puzzles and quite good combat, above all near the start, but there are traps everywhere. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Kwisior Posted July 29, 2023 I love MAP06 from Valiant (Engineering Disaster). Easily beats the IWAD city maps. It's one of the most memorable levels I've played, for its freedom and light storytelling. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
