invictius Posted July 24, 2023 (For record my state has a housing crisis where you can be on 100k and still be almost homeless) Have had neighbours that have had 6-12 month leases with a crisis place and they're either really good or really bad. No in between. The last lot were selling ice, climbed up on MY roof to install security cameras so they could flush it if the cops came. Found out from a neighbour that they had guns drawn on them more than once. Absolute ferals with no respect for neighbours (Mostly retirees, people that have to get up for work, kids have to go to school). Now I've got more of the same. Always dv going on but when the cops turn up they deny it and say they're sick of having to talk to them when nothing is going on. Had them turn up three times in one night for loud music (2am-11am). The ones that are good neighbours keep to themselves, but the ones that act like ferals want everyone to know their business. A true busybody would love it, you don't even have to look out your window, you can hear it from anywhere. The cops can't do much unless they catch them in the act. The crisis centre said they're just a tenancy manager, what do I expect her to do. Put a camera up that was pointing into public areas, they just went to the blind spot and smashed it down. Next time I have to deal with the cops, I'll say "Lend me that taser and I'll sort this out for you permanently in 30 seconds". I'd love all the neighbours to get together and beat the ever-loving shit out of them. Why do they keep putting them in areas that rub everyone else up the wrong way? Now, I'm not stereotyping here but the youth unemployment rate in the worst places in the county is about 20%, right? That's less people that have to get up for work in the morning. People are more tolerant of loud music way past the time limit. The last lot were rebirthing cars, I saw someone dump a car into the river in front of a heap of houses. The guy there just said they were used to it and happens a lot. I don't know if the ngo gets government funding but we should all write to our MP and say no longer do we want our tax dollars going to shit who'll just cause headaches for us. Half the people trash the unit on their last day there, too. Tenancy officer says she doesn't understand why they do it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dasho Posted July 24, 2023 To answer the thread title, I'd say that yes, you're wasting your time hoping that your government/representatives will do something to stop what's going on (or aren't actively contributing to the problem). I can imagine the frustration of you and other presumably hard-working people in your neighborhood seeing what happens when people who likely don't have to provide much for themselves and also know that they can act with impunity act accordingly. I'd secure whatever means of self-defense your country allows you to have and focus on not becoming a victim. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Mr. Freeze Posted July 24, 2023 The youth unemployment rate is 7.5% nationally so I'm not sure where 20% is coming from. Also let me guess...San Francisco? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Caffeine Freak Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) I don't know where exactly you live, but from what you describe the people in authority likely fall into one of three general categories: a) they have a desire to change things but are tied up in legal red tape that prevents them from taking any meaningful action, b) they are apathetic, as they would benefit not at all from taking action and would effectively be a single cog working against the machine, or c) they are actively contributing to the problem through blind adherence to idiotic ideals and/or greed for additional funding that they will ask for when they (or their similar but equally terrible successor) promise to totally clean up systemic problems like yours the next time they run a campaign. I could expand on that last point further but don't see the use. Yes, you're probably wasting your time. Edited July 24, 2023 by Caffeine Freak 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

No, don’t say this. That’s a great way to turn this into something that just fucks you and nobody else. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
mrthejoshmon Posted July 24, 2023 I live in a shit tip too, have all my life, here are my survival tips for dealing with wastrels: Buy bedphones to go to sleep with, nothing dulls out the sounds of domestic combat quite like tropical thunderstorms playing in bedphones, alternative choices are indoor rain (including thunder, fireplace optional), heavy snowstorm sounds (blizzard preferable) perhaps you may even enjoy ASMR. Don't play too loud as to damage your hearing, but just loud enough to be the primary sound. Avoid contact, any at all, if contact is established remain courteous yet also not too involved, they might not bother. Keep to yourself when concerning them. Avoid the police, they'll know for a fact who it was, the police will also be completely useless to help you. Avoid external CCTV and instead focus on hunkering down, good and multiple methods of door lock (mine has like 4) and internal cameras will be the best, if you have a garage then use it, if your car is outside then have a single camera watch it from a window. Curtains and blinds, don't advertise your belongings. Be confident, everybody loves to pick on the meek, so walk with your head high. Following a risk of a home invasion, depending if you aren't in the USA, do not arm yourself with a weapon at your house, instead a useful/decorative item nearby that you can use in a desperate struggle would suffice, I will not recommend anything. Never draw attention to yourself, never be a vigilante, you are not Frank Castle and you can't take out like 5 guys. In the event of something kicking off, hiding or running is preferable Take all of this with a grain of salt, or none, or don't take any advice at all I ain't your boss, shit worked for me though. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Eek, I meant regionally. We have ghettoes where someone could be dumping a car into the river in front of a hundred houses being able to see. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

A few years ago it was made illegal to carry a pocket knife, unless you're going to or from a place where you need it. And it should be locked in your car when not in use. Pretty crazy. The criminals don't fear harm because they know they're the only ones with guns. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

You mean don't be all mouth like dog the bounty hunter is? He looks like he'd lose anyone unless it were hand to hand combat. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
