PayPal, in its early days, was actually the merger of two digital financial sites, one of which was co-founded by Musk and called X.com.

Holy shit XCOM!!!!

About that drink I owe you, @LexiMax.

I love how Musk is on a one-man-mission to bankrupt himself with the billions he's blown on Twitter, the revenue lost from fleeing advertisers who don't want to be associated with the toxic sludge-people who occupy it now and the conga line of frivolous lawsuits he's indulging in as well. I only wish he'd get rid of all his money sooner so he becomes so uninteresting media-wise, we never have to hear about him again. Seriously, he's the new Donald Trump right now in regards to becoming an annoying human headline who can't so much as fart without a million feckless articles being written about it. Musk is very much in a hell of his own making after grotesquely overvaluing Twitter, being forced to go through with buying it and is now trying every little hare-brained scheme his febrile imagination can conjure up as he tries desperately to squeeze his $44 billion back out of it. His plan to turn it into X: The Everything App and model it after the Chinese government-approved WeChat is both frightening in its connotations and hilarious in the sense that he'll undoubtedly screw it up.

Musk buying Twitter and the astonishing mishandling of it all in the span of less than a year has thoroughly dismantled the genius myth that was built around him for years, showing the rest of the world that he really is just a hack-fraud and a blithering idiot.

I've never been a Twitter user, but there are a few Twitter accounts I kept in bookmarks because they were interesting.

Musk made it nearly impossible to do that without an account, so well.

This so much, I had so many interesting twitter  accounts bookmarked and now all of them are fucking useless.

I saw a moistcritikal video about this. What's especially stupid here is the fact that typing the letter X to find this website has a very high risk of taking you to a porn site such as XVIDEOS.

It was surprisingly tricky to find this vid, but I found it regardless...

This is scaremongering nonsense.  The fediverse behaves much in the same way as IRC and E-mail - a network of servers that allow communication between individuals on different servers over a shared protocol.

If you send a DM over the fediverse, you have to trust your server owner and the owner of the server you're sending the message to - but aside from very specialized apps that you're probably not using, that's the exact threat model on any website, social network or communications medium.  Google is reading your e-mail, and Facebook and Twitter are reading your DM's.  Heck, the owners of Doomworld can read your forum-based private messages if they're so inclined.

I don't think /x/ is the 4chan board Twitter currently resembles the most.

Fediverse websites have unsolvable problems that don't even exist in other websites.

Is that even worth reading past the first paragraph?  Since if that's an adequate abstract then my response is "well yes obviously."  (Although the part about private messages is probably wrong since usually distributed protocols do or have the option to end to end encrypt those these days, although I'm not familiar with this particular protocol.)  People need to learn that whatever you post on the Internet is probably permanent record.  Things do get lost, but the more you want something lost the more people want to back it up.  Centralized control is just giving a false sense of safety since it looks like one party has access to that data, but there's people screen shotting and scraping data from centralized platforms too.  (See also people who convince themselves Snapchat is ephemeral.)  If you don't want something to be permanent record, do not post it on the Internet.  This has been the case since before modern social media, it continues to be the case, and will always be the case.

Also what LexiMax said.

Another point in common is that both never pay their bills.

Useful Twitter link.

I was disappointed when this guy stopped his daily posts.

But Twitter does matter, because a lot of valuable information is still posted on it (if you filter out the tons of shit, which is/was generally possible if you use(d) the tools available), and much of it not readily available elsewhere. It was one of the great "equalizers" the Internet brought to the world, but had the fatal flaw that it wasn't set up in a way that would prevent a rich man-child from buying it and sabotaging it for his own personal agenda/whim.

I reckon Elon is trying to kill Twitter. He was forced to buy it after trying to pull out of the deal.

He destroyed it’s integrity by messing up the blue tick system.

He then restricts the amount of posts you can read per day which to advertisers is certainly not attractive. Reducing the amount of potential eyeballs on products and and services advertised.

This ‘X’ thing is another attempt to further degrade an already degrading platform.

Microsoft also uses the X letter in some of their brandings, such as DirectX and Xbox. Seems like they've got a new challenger now.

Why is the X made of three III instead of two II ?

It's an imitation of calligraphy, where thin and thick strokes are used depending on their direction. Fountain pens are a lost art...

Welp, time for my own two cents on Enron Husk and his Very SMRT Ideas, especially since not even copyright/trademark isn’t stopping him from transforming Twitter into “X The Everything App I Pulled Out of My Ass to Please My Audience of (deeply stupid and easily pleased) Marks— I Mean QElon Cultists— I Mean Fanboys”.

First of all, there’s been this repeated line of “just stop using social media, we’re better off without it anyway” and here’s pretty much the best rebuttal I can think of:

While I don’t really use social media myself as a source of income, I do use it to show off things I’ve made and others have made as well. And now thanks to the infinite ego of one Apartheid Clyde, it looks like that might get scattered to the four winds.

Not only that, I do know countless people who do use social media as even their main source of income, and if Twitter goes, so does that income (and many of these people either already work a day job or literally can’t due to reasons such as being disabled).

And with that out of the way, that might be an actual possibility because of this entire development (spoilered as this discusses CSAM, though it’s just a Reddit image discussing the ban of all Twitter links):

Spoiler

TL;DR- A large account that was caught posting some outright illegal/illicit material got banned and then reinstated by Phony Stark.

And just to drive home to point of how serious something like this can get, this can warrant the DOJ’s attention (on top of the EU apparently being in talks to ban xXx_Tw@tter_xXx in its entirety). Hell, nothing is stopping Google Play or Apple from delisting the mobile app altogether.

”but freeze peach and to the moon and those sweet teslas tho”

I am so fucking tired.

It seriously causes me to question my faith in humanity like nothing else over the fact that not only do people still think this Emerald Failson will take people to Mars, they’ll also trust him with their fucking bank information.

No seriously, he wants to turn the Bird App’s husk into a goddamn financial app.

Anywho, see you on here or Discord or Hive or Threads or Bluesky, I guess.

(also I’ve been working on getting a Misskey thing up and running because Doom manga and whatnot)

Elon is a goddamn idiot. Seriously he should be forced to honestly work for a day and see how it feels instead of shitting on free speech in an Orwellian manner.

Twitter sucks but the people that make it suck will just move to other platforms and make them suck more than they already do now. The rest will just suck it up and stick it out until the site is legitimately defunct, or they will just stop using social media altogether when they realize their echo chamber is truly an echo chamber now.

I'm fortunate that I started using Twitter primarily for work 4 years ago and that word-of-mouth has been the main reason why potential clientele have found their way to me in the last two. My reputation and output have managed to exceed past the confines of the website to a point where, should the worse happen and TwiX curls up and dies, I should be relatively okay but it certainly hasn't stopped me from worrying at least a little and making proactive contingency plans. What especially sucks about this incredibly flimsy position Muskrat has put the website in is that Twitter proved to be a very effective, cost-efficient place for many freelancers like myself who were making their start and couldn't afford horribly expensive websites like Freelancer.com or UpWork; both of which are notoriously predatory with UpWork charging you separate prices for every one of its features and Freelancer who take a whopping 40% of anything you make from any gig you happen to find on it.

Twitter may have been a hellsite filled with morons perpetuating the worse kind of discourse, but it was also really fucking useful for networking and marketing your skill-set. I count my lucky stars that I started when I did and am real disappointed that others may not be able to reap the same benefits that I have. Mind you, I still believe in the internet's ability to provide people with opportunities, so whether TwiX dies or not, enterprising people will find a way. Personally, my plan is mostly to simply follow wherever it is my clientele (YouTubers) wind up.
