Twitter is rebranding to X

Recommended Posts

honestly it's pretty stupid dumb and stupid. That bird logo is really iconic and now just been flushed to the toilet for a letter. I don't use twitter, but sometimes I go there to see some nice fanarts and dead memes.

gotta say though, this whole thing with Elon making horrible changes to the site is pretty entertaining to watch.

In 2 months everyone is going to forget about this entire thing. Like that net neutrality bill lol

The issues that have come up are not just random outbursts by a crazy CEO, they're signs of a company on the road to financial ruin, and a desperate CEO trying everything he can to put a finger in the dam before it bursts.  Twitter could declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but that requires a reasonable restructuring plan that the bankruptcy courts would sign off on.

I have a feeling that this is a two-way race - can Threads get a public-facing web interface before BlueSky comes out of beta.  One of those outcomes is a certainty, and once either of those happen, Twitter is in truly existential trouble.

We'll see I guess, but I don't think any of Elon's companies have ever declared bankruptcy before. Pretty skeptical of any claims of Twitter's imminent failure ever since we got all those insiders telling us that the servers are about to go down or something.

As a straight edge man, this has been a distressing past few months. Do I have to change my tattoos to "YYY" now????

I don't blame anyone for thinking TwiX is about to die given everything Musk has managed to fuck up in just 8 months. Every move has made things exponentially worse as more money is flushed down the proverbial toilet in a myriad of methods and stupid decisions we've previously noted. He may be the richest dude in the world at the moment, but money is still a finite resource and even his more successful ventures with SpaceX and Tesla spend more time eating investor money than they do making any kind of external profit. Those investors might grow more fed up with the idiot's antics and pull their assets while he continues to burn what reserves he has left.

Any reasonable person could ascertain that this thing is most likely going to implode like a financial neutron star, but I'm not one to make any big predictions since the last few years have made it abundantly clear that our reality actually runs on clown logic, so I'm just going to wait and see how it all plays out. Regardless, this has been the most entertaining dumpster fire since the Fallout 76 debacle.

That is because none of his other companies have been in the financial position that Twitter is currently in.  Before Elon bought Twitter, the site was doing....okay.  It wasn't making much money, but it also wasn't hemorrhaging money either.  Treading water would be the best way to put it.

However, when Elon was compelled to purchase Twitter by the courts, the purchase saddled the company with an additional $13 billion worth of debt.  That debt has to be paid back, and the old cash flow of Twitter wasn't going to materialize in being able to pay $13 billion worth of debt on the required time scale.  If he didn't have that debt, there's a very good chance Twitter would be doing just fine today.

Firing most of his staff, cutting off API access, $8 blue checks, the site having issues because he can't pay his cloud hosting bills, stiffing his office landlords, limiting access to accounts that aren't logged in, trying to pivot to a new business model complete with a new name, all of these make perfect sense in the context that he's desperately trying to cut costs or find new revenue streams.  This is on top of chasing away advertisers through his own ideologically-driven mismanagement of the site.

Because of the debt, he's screwed.  He knows he's screwed.  All of these changes he's doing right now are performative, to try and create the appearance of a pro-active CEO that tried and inevitably failed to "save" a company that was doing fine before he saddled it with billions of dollars of debt.

This is because there are reportedly teams of people dedicated to distracting Elon from making any real decisions. SpaceX is a good example of this phenomenon. It also explains why when Elon did make a decision, his rocket exploded and failed.

Unfortunately can't source this right now due to being on mobile but I'm sure someone can back me up on this.

As someone who doesn't use Twitter and have cringed at the very term "tweet" since about as long as it's been around, well, I suppose "X" is an upgrade. But it's no different from Google rebranding to Alphabet a few years back, or more recently Facebook transitioning to "Meta." These tech companies think that by changing the name, that somehow you'll magically shed some of the negative reputation associated with the old name.

It's like euphemisms for corporate overlords.

If Twitter did go out of existence, I think the world would be a much better place. It's contributed to depression, low attention spans, and the dumbing down of communication to cave man phrases. Full paragraphs are just too long and scary, might bore our users. Fake News, conspiracy theory paranoia, censorship, hyper-partisanship, the rise & election of 45.

You can't even look at "real" journalism anymore since the authors are themselves Twitter zombies. I don't know when reporting about random Joe's tweets and reddit threads started getting counted as "news."

Eh, Twitter in it's prime is how you use it. A lot of valuable viewpoints on there, and while it could have the tendencies of creating excess "sludge", during major real time events Twitter is highly useful learn about something (so long one has the media literacy for it).

I will miss it for the fun niche accounts, quality shitposters, and certain journalists/authors whose work I highly respect.

It's certainly not worse than Facebook, which has contributed towards actual genocide.

This. News commentary is just as important as the news itself. When you deal with the corporate media services, you only have the viewpoint of a handful of people. Commentary from random strangers often provides crucial information and context that the media services miss (some times intentionally). If you have the patience to wade through / ignore the shit posts.

If commentary from every rando online on the latest breaking news stories is something you need in your life, there's always Fark. I tried using it for a little while, but it just didn't stick.

But you have to be veeeeery caution with unreflekted comments, especially if they are filled with "feeled Data" and unreflected opinions.

Just as an example, in our logistics you'll find people shouting that the sales team wants to f*ck them up every day at 4 PM, as there is running in a LOT of orders to ship the next day to our customers, about 60-70% of our daily orders.

"They wait until they can go home at 4 pm, press on the button and send all the stuff to do over!".

The truth is, our professional customers that work with sanitary installations work also from 7am to 4pm, after their work day, they note down what they need for the next day for their work and send the order over to us.

A person from another branch said, they have every day something wrong in the shippment we send over.

He made a big thing about it up to the CEO.

I've let him note down every little problem with the shippment, analyzed it and in the end it was 0.34% of the total stuff we send over, much with "problems" like the Label wasn't placed good enough.

If we sent over every day thousands of articles and some have a problem like that, it is nearly impossible to make it "flawless ".

Dorsey is also kind of an idiot in terms of a political/social mind, but not having a fanbase that's brutally annoying goes a long way.

Well, you have to admit that much like Mark Zuckerberg, he's pretty much one of the Twitter founders and a long-timer, unlike Musk.

I wouldn't put much stock in Jack Dorsey. Much like how Muskrat became CEO of Tesla, he used office politics to push out Noah Glass, the software developer who actually conceived Twitter. Dorsey had a bigger hand in it in terms of incorporating the website than Muskrat ever had in regards to actually building anything he has his grubby fingers on, but Dorsey has never had any real creative vision of his own. Hell, he was only CEO for Twitter's first two years before he was fired from the position in 2008 due to being distant and reluctant to even have the job at all. He became "Chairman" after that, and only became interim CEO again after the successor of his original replacement retired in 2015, before leaving it again the following year. All the while he was working on other things with Block, his other company as far back as 2009. Suffice to say, Twitter barely ever really experienced a proper tenure with Dorsey at the wheel and, from what I can tell, the dude never really liked having the job and didn't do anything of note when he did.

Even for the sake of argument that he'd still make for a better CEO than Muskrat, it's a moot point since there's no way he'd ever come back. Dorsey's far too busy with his other company, Block, faffing about with Blockchain tech and shilling cryptocoin bullshit.

In principle, I don’t believe anyone should own or run Twitter. It wants to be a public good at a protocol level, not a company. Solving for the problem of it being a company however, Elon is the singular solution I trust. I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness.

I see. Knewing his handling of Twitter already somehow, that's why I'm in a dilemma here.

Great example of how society is run by the people who hold the purse strings, not by people who know what they're doing.

It's like having your restaurant's menu rearranged by the owner's new girlfriend, except magnified to the size of a multibillion dollar corporation that also exerts significant influence on politics.

Even better when you consider that Musk's fortune is primarily hype, and that he's the richest person in the world despite the fact that for example Tesla produces much fewer actual goods than Toyota.
