banjiepixel Posted July 27, 2023 I want to keep my playing style consistent between Doom 1 and Doom 2 so I generally use SSG only as a alternative for Chaingun and as a backup for the power weapons. If the situation can be reasonably handled with regular shotgun, that is what I usually use. I try to use weapons that are appropriate to the actual threat level of the situation. I find it more fun than going for overkill always when possble. Regular shotgun is basically like the mega buster from the Mega Man games for me, it's the default weapon that is always out unless situation requires something else. something faster or more powerful to survive or to avoid things getting too tedious. And the thing is, so many situations where you would need SSG usually can also be handled with either Chaingun or Rocket Launcher. I feel like SSG is literally at it's best as a backup weapon for rest of the weapon roster. It bridges the gap between the basic and power weapons and solves many problems in situations where you don't have the power weapons of are out of ammo for them. It can also work as backup for Chaingun in many situations where actual Chaingun doesn't have ammo. And of course it's a great backup for regular shotgun when you have only shotgun shells and need more firepower for your shots against mid/high tier enemies. I do admit that I kinda use SSG too much in situations where I should just use Rocket Launcher or Plasmagun, but that is because trying too hard to save ammo of power weapons for very high threat situations that are often much rarer than I think. Also even if I would use too much power weapon ammo, I would still have SSG as a backup. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
rita remton Posted July 27, 2023 default weapon: sg. would change to ssg if: * monsters are not zombiemen, shotgun guys, imps. * target is in the short-mid range. * battle contains mixed monster types and switching weapons during the battle is impractical. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Akagi666 Posted July 28, 2023 Pretty often, it's better for sniping and it saves bullets against weak enemies like hitscanners and imps. If there's a group of imps together, that's a different story, but the single shotgun is very useful. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted July 28, 2023 (edited) Shotgun for long range and SSG for everywhere else. The only enemy that wastes shells from the Pumpy is Pinkys due to their odd health amount. On every other enemy the damage to shell use equals roughly about the same. Low damage rolls on imps annoys me so much that I SSG almost all imps. I'll break out the pumpy on Chaingunners pretty often since they engage at long range pretty often. Edited July 28, 2023 by kalensar 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Agent Strange Posted July 28, 2023 Fairly regularly. Like kalensar said above, I use the Shotgun for sniping and the SSG for everything else. I dislike having an odd number of shells when I have the SSG equipped so I'll pop a shot off with the regular Shotgun if I need to. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
espilka Posted July 28, 2023 A lot. Always when the SSG offers no meaningful benefit, and at times when SSG is even a handicap being slower. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
sean-dude Posted July 29, 2023 I use it for saving ammo, dealing with low tier enemies, and sniping. I also find because it's cool down is quicker than the ssg you get some high tiers like the pain elemental stuck in stun lock. The ssg takes too long and you end up getting a bunch of lost souls chasing you down. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DarkScythe13 Posted July 29, 2023 As much as the SSG depending on the level. They each play a role. SSG picks off most demons and grouped humanoid enemies. However for spread out individual encounters with Imps (who are often the most plentiful enemies), picking them off with regular shotty never gets old. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
EvilSqueegee Posted July 29, 2023 I use the SSG for certain enemy types, but for the most part I use the SG for sniping small amounts of low-tier enemies. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
