Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition

Recommended Posts

Nightdive's Rise of the Triad remaster releases today (at least in my timezone; it's 12 hours away which is still today for me). Who else plans on buying it? This will be my first experience with ROTT and I have no doubts Nightdive's efforts will represent the game to me at it's best.

Basically snatching up the moment it drops. Night Dive and New Blood both have great track records, and the demo stood as testimony enough that this is the source port that this game has begged for since the source code first reared its ugly, ugly head all those years ago.

Seems like a no-brainer to vouch for this considering it also releases on most modern platforms.

Now, about ROTT 2013... :P

Buying this today. It's about time this game had a proper source port. ROTTexpr was the closest to managing that but it still didn't feel quite right.

As someone who did a Let's Play of this game back in 2009 you have no idea how thrilled I am this is coming out. I feel like a major wrong has finally been corrected.

That's okay, today's technology finally allows the game to run at around 50-60 FPS. Maybe.

I hope the Ludicrous Edition will give enough incentive to port that game to consoles too.

I already have ROTT: Dark War on Steam, but I might consider it one day.

I thought about getting it, but I was a bit too wary about its mixed reviews..

It's definitely worth it if you can get it at low prices, if only to witness the birth of the boomer shooter renaissance. With that said, the game itself is firmly entranched in the "good but not great" category. It clearly was made by people who had a clear and concise vision, but didn't have quite the skills to pull it off yet. As a result, the game was verily unoptimized, had some unsavory design here and there, but man the game did its best to have you love it.

Despite all of its shortcomings, it had a cult following just because there was no game like ROTT 2013 back in the time. You either had the janky retro throwback shooter or the countless gray and brown military shooters. Needless to say, I chose the janky retro shooter and I had no regret.

Another fun case of a ND port saving the day from the alternatives. I’ll be picking this up despite being preoccupied with the sequel to Remnant.

I mean, the 2013 release is, together with Shadow Warrior and a few others part of the boomer shooter renaissance. I was surprised it never landed a console release back in the day when Shadow Warrior did. Its an alright game and its definitely not a title to be forgotten. The classic remains the best option, but if you want visuals, the 2013 isn't too bad.

What is the "lost" beta content that's been restored? I'm not super familiar with the game and that's something I hadn't heard about before.

In an earlier thread for this game I mentioned how I wanted to see an optional HUD with health and ammo represented by numbers as opposed to icons you have to count. A few months later a new trailer dropped featuring multiple examples of such a HUD, and I edited my post to say "my wish came true! thanks guys!"

But I figured it's worth repeating where it's more likely to be seen. Even if it's just a coincidence, thank you NightDive.

They added the cut alternate enemies (ex. female variants).

and I voiced those variants!

There's also a level editor if anyone is keen to make maps - ROTT has been infamously hard to mod so workshop support of any kind is a win.

Done a great job too. Hilariously enough hearing your voiceover on the variants caught my attention more than the male variants.

(My rendering code is in the game, as are a few of my maps in the HUNT Continues campaign)

Even as someone who still has yet to get far in the original RoTT on my DosBox/Boxer, I can't say that I'm not just a bit stoked for this. Wish I knew how to download shit and load it properly from Steam on my Mac OS X.

We don't have a Mac OS version, thus why you can't download it.

You shouldn't really expect new games to be coming out for Mac OS, never mind remasters of older, more niche ones. Apple pretty much burned that bridge beyond repair. If you're using an Intel Mac and don't plan on upgrading you'll probably want to consider dual booting with another operating system if you care about playing new games or even just using software in general.
