It's pronounced however you want it to be pronounced. But if you want to avoid social discrimination by choosing a non-dictionary version, then go with the dictionary version. A dictionary exists to provide a standardized vocabulary so we can understand each other despite huge distances and don't have to reinvent language constantly: but it's by no means the ultimate book of ultimate truth that ought to be adhered to dogmatically. I've been pronouncing it gibs, kinda like I've been pronouncing Descent as Deskent, though after finding out it's pronounced like Disent, I might sometimes pronounce it like that.

according to the wiki "Gibs is short for the English word giblets, or fowl innards. Adrian Carmack is credited with coining the term as applied to gaming, and Doom is one of the first games that gibs appeared in." However, everyone is entitled to their own pronunciation even if I disagree with it

No, that is not it either. I have always pronounced it like "decent", but it might also be pronounced like "day-scent".

Interesting to see that at the time of writing, 64% of the poll-takers are correct in choosing "jiblets" as the pronunciation, but of that collective I imagine a very low amount would also say "JIF" (the correct pronunciation) when talking of the GIF format.

It's derived from giblets and thus should be pronounced jibs. But I always thought that sounded stupid and said it with a hard G regardless. :D
