BUYXRAYS Posted August 4, 2023 I've been wanting to create my own IWAD using the shareware version of Doom 1 as a foundation. However, I'm unsure about the legality of doing something like this. Chex Quest did something similar, but I want to make sure that my project is entirely legal. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

This is a case of i have heard this before and sure enough: Relevant posts: TLDR: Basically, yes, with limitations, but the question should be: why? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
No-Man Baugh Posted August 4, 2023 If you want a preexisting IWAD to use as a template to add on your own assets without getting into any hot water for missing a sound copywriten sound or sprite, then Freedoom should have you covered as it's covered under GPL so it's both free to download and to distribute, including as a totally seperate total conversion like Suburban Basketball didhttps://freedoom.github.io/download.html 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalensar Posted August 5, 2023 The best option ever since it's been around since 2009 is FreeDoom. Before 2009 then the Shareware would have been the option, but now it's obsoleted. I haven't made a full game yet, but I've used Freedoom's freedom to enhance a few projects for compatibility reasons that similar in use to making a full game. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The easy way to remember this is you don't use GPL on things that aren't source code. Edited August 5, 2023 by Edward850 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
houston Posted August 7, 2023 The shareware executable disables mod loading, so if nothing else I believe it is (or was) against Id's wishes. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
